General Information
Super Dollfie (often shortened to SD) were
Volks' first ABJD. They are meant to represent children of about 10 years of age, although of course dependant on the owner they can represent any age at all. They are sometimes referred to as 'SD10' to differentiate from
Volks' later 'SD13' model.
SD are roughly 55-56cm (22inches) tall, and have approximately a 22-25cm (8.7-9.8inches) sized head. The boys are usually 1cm taller than the girls. Older models tended to have larger heads, but gradually the trend has been towards smaller sized heads with the newer models. As a result, the fit of wigs varies and many newer models fit
Volks' 'Dollfie Dream' sized wigs better.
The Tenshi (angel) type 'KyoTenshi' is the same size as the Super Dollfie. The KyoTenshi body is basically the SD standard boy body but without genitals.
As well as the standard and LE Super Dollfie that
Volks sells, they are also available to be ordered at any time through
Volks'
Full Choice System.
History
The first Super Dollfie were released in 1999. At the time there were only four models available - Nana, Sara, Kira and Megu - who all had the same headmold, but different wigs, eyes, and face makeup. Later the range swelled to include other girls and eventually boy dolls as well.
The original Super Dollfie were all released in
Volks old type of resin. (This is called 'old resin' by the Western fans, and 'cast resin' by the Japanese.) Later when
Volks released pureskin resin, they gradually upgraded all of their standard release SD to use pureskin resin, as well as all of their LE releases from that time onwards. More recently, UV protect pureskin has been released; while all LE releases and FCS dolls use this resin, Mark is the only SD10 standard that comes with it.
When
Volks upgraded from old resin to pureskin, they also upgraded the overall body sculpt and design. The newer body is much more aesthetically pleasing than the original, with ball-joints that are less protrusionary, and in addition has more stability and posability.
The new pureskin body sculpt in fact went through two versions, which are now referred to as the 'old knees' and 'new knees' (or 'real knees') versions. The original knees of the pureskin bodies were somewhat unsightly and the legs were rather awkward for standing and sitting. After receiving feedback from fans,
Volks redesigned the legs, improving both the shape and style of the knees and also the stability of the legs overall. Both standard and LE SDs were released with the 'old knees' body before
Volks made the change, but no FCS SDs had the 'old knees'.
