Household Pets VS BJDS??
Hi, is this the right place to put this?? I just discovered the swanky world of BJDS... and I'm looking into getting my own. I just have a few questions for owners so I can work a few things out.
I wanted to know if any owners had problems with their pets getting to their dolls. See, I have a ferret, and as ferret owners know, even if you don't want them to get into something they'll somehow manage it (witty buggers)... Is there any history of pets/animals getting to the dolls?
OR, even other family members. I have a really obnoxious little brother with equally rude and annoying friends that don't see any problem with coming around and messing with my things. Although this won't be a problem for long (I'm planning on getting my own place in a month) I wanted to hear stories of anyone with any of these problems.
Thanks for responding!

I'm fortunate in that I only have a bird and he's not out of the cage unless I'm there supervising so.. no problems. Plus, he's a little afraid of the dolls (and everything else in the world, he's quite the wuss!).
My mom's dog just sniffs at them. Her biggest problem is she likes laces or strings or anything that hangs like that (to chew on them, you'd think she was a cat or something). I've found her chewing on shoe laces, stringy-bits that are attached to pants or shirts and have had to rescue those (including my own clothes). Lol..

I have cats, mice, and doves--and none of them have ever caused any problems ever.
And neither did my little brother.
My FRIEND, however, who is completely self-absorbed and has no respect for anyone's things, broke the finger off of my DoT Sha O_______O

I have 2 cats and they pretty much leave my dolls alone for the most part. One cat loves on my dolls and expects them to pet her (she's always so disappointed.) My other cat leaves them alone since she rubbed up against the legs of a doll that was standing up when she was a kitten and he sat down really hard on her. O_O
I have heard some horror stories about dolls being chewed up by dogs however. You'll probably need a good place to keep your doll where the ferrets and brother can't find.

My cats like wigs, so I have a shelf now above my bed that's too high for them to jump on. Keeping stuff higher up with no way of accessing it should help with the ferret at the very least.

I have the same advice: clear out a shelf for the dolls way up high! One of my cats likes to chew on doll hands and toes and another one mauled a mohair wig once, right after I bought it

*nods* cats love wigs. At least mine do, but aside from the occasional lick out of curiosity my dogs have never shown any interest whatsoever.

Yeah, my dogs used to eat my barbies when I was a kid, and my menace brother liked to give them really horrible haircuts without my knowing. I'm not going to let anything like that happen to my Doc Yen (when I get him, still saving ).. I don't think I'll even let him out of my sight! I can't even stop looking at pictures of him online.
So I guess pets aren't much of a problem... should I be more worried about other people touching my doll?

My dogs barely acknowledge my dolls, and my ratties don't either - although one of them has tasted one of my dollie maryjanes, and at some time, probably a tiny taste off her arm (small, filled with apoxie now). Better keep them away from gnawing beasties. xD
If you're worried about your family not respecting your stuff, wait until you have your own place to get your dolls. They're too expensive to be left at the mercy of disrespectful people.

I have two cats and a canary currently, and in past I had a pet rat as well... None of them have ever bothered the dolls.
Although... like others have said up-thread... my cats *did* make off with an unattended mohair wig once upon a time. They thought they'd found The Greatest Cat-Toy Ever. So, be wary of leaving furry wigs where little, four-footed hunters can have a go at them. o_O

My dog doesn't bother my dolls at all. Right now its just me, the dog and the mice and none of them care. The only thing I have to be careful with is my dolls' stuffed pets. Bridie doesn't recognize the difference between stuffed animals and dog toys.

My cat nor my dog have ever bothered my boys.. my cat likes to sniff them a little, but otherwise, she leaves them be. Although she likes to use Bedwyn for a bed, for whatever reason. But ONLY Bedwyn. XD
Anyway.. as for your little brother, have a serious talk with him about how he'll have to pay for your dolls if he puts a fingerprint on them. Lock your door, if possible.
If you do have nibbly pets - just put your dolls on your desk, or somewhere high where they can't be reached by the furry friends. :3

My cat has one or two favorites that he honestly hasn't figured out won't pet him in return. The dog has zero interest in any of them, and the rabbit doesn't get out in the room where the dolls are.
Having said that:
I have rescued a doll who was the target of a dog attack... her head was moderately chewed by a small teacup sized dog. Granted, the dog was a known chewer, and the doll's previous owner should have known better.
Mohair wigs on the other hand... hoo boy. I've rescued Suzu's wig more times than I care to count... and my cat absolutely destroyed my lavender TinyBear wig before I got home one day. I now keep my mohair wigs locked in a drawer where my cat can't get to them.

I have to say one thing.. If you have rodents/pocket pets that you let out for exercise (rats, hamsters, gerbils, degus, GPs, rabbits), even supervised (which they should be always), these guys are natural chewers. Not out of spite or even curiousity, they need to chew to keep their teeth under control and will chew on anything hard they can get their teeth near. Not saying it's a disaster or anything, but I know if my gerbils had a chance around my dolls, they'd have chewed them to bits. So, if you have anything like that, just be careful when they are out and about. And a we know, it's bad for the dollies but even worse for the animals as resin isn't edible.

Oh, I know that. I just got so used to having my dolls on the bed that it sort of didn't register. These days I'm better than that. Of course, I always supervise them.

My dogs have never had a problem. They might sniff, but they are so used to having dolls around that they know that they are never to touch them. One of mine does get jealous at times (like when I'm dressing one of my dolls), but I just put "clothes" on her to make her happy.

It's really not a question of what the cats do to the dolls. As far as they're concerned, they'd have nothing to do with those weird things that smell funny.
It's what we inflict on the cats that gets us those little moments of amusement lol!
(What the????)
(You've Got to be kidding me.)

I had one cat that loved to snuggle my dolls. She figured out that fingers make a great chin scratcher, but never hurt them. XD Another cat likes to pull synthetic mohair wigs off head, but doesn't take them anywheres. Apparently they just aren't allowed to be on heads. o.o
One of our dogs saw one of my heads laying on the floor and must have assumed it was a ball or chewbone, because he scooped it up and started walking away. Luckily, he is a golden retriever, so he didn't chew it, just carried it around. x.x The head was unharmed, lucky, as was the faceup.
So, all in all, I think my pets are pretty well behaved... or else they just don't care.

i knew a couple with ferrets and they brought them into a class i took. they definitely were very mischevious (picking up things or trying to stealing random items) and wanted to explore every nook and cranky. i would take simple precautions like closing doors, etc.
my cat likes the wigs- but only when they are off the doll. i think the wigs are too similar to rodent-like cat toys and the like. perhaps they see the hair and think fur? who knows. my cat actually seems either un-phased by my doll, or scared of him, so he tends to leave him alone.

My dolls sit out in the same room as my cat and have thus far remained unmolested. But, for what it's worth, they're virtually barricaded on a shelf in the "stay the f*** off of everything in this corner or YOU DIE" part of the room, so I doubt the cat could satisfy any curiosities he might have. I guess the point I'd make is not to give the pets the opportunity to indulge their more destructive tendencies.
As far as siblings go, I don't know what the family dynamics are like, but I'd just get everyone together-- siblings, parents/guardians, etc.-- and be pretty explicit about things. I don't know if the cost is a factor you're comfortable discussing with your parents, but that would certainly be worth mentioning. Do what you can to make it clear that the dolls are off-limits. My sister has had dolls for several years now with a toddler in the same living space, and there have never been issues. She just made the boundaries quite clear with the young'un, and there haven't been problems.
