If one of my dolls were terribly damaged, I would probably try to replace it or recreate the concept in a new doll. I'd hold on to the original still, but if I were in a situation where I couldn't reasonably keep it, I would throw it away. My lifestyle does not allow me to keep everything I accumulate. I might rather put my doll to rest myself rather than have it live on in its mangled form in someone else's collection.

This is a very silly question X_x
It's an expensive hobby, not a hobby where one just throws stuff away if it's damaged. :\

I would try to sell it if possible, but... there is one reason I'd throw away a doll: if it had been my perfect doll, a doll that I loved completely, and it was ruined (fire, shattered to pieces, crushed, whatever) I would destroy it rather than sell it to someone else or give it away. It would be a kind of funeral, in a sense. I would feel so sad knowing that my once perfect doll would continue - even if out of my sight - as some horrible, maimed, trashy-looking thing, that I'd feel better just to end it and have only the memory of how beautiful it once was.

This question immediately brings to mind "The Dollmaster" (Korean horror flick full of gorgeous CH dolls) and one of the main things you learn from that movie is that it's a REALLY bad idea to throw away a doll!
But seriously I would never do it. They are too valuable and there are ways to fix or customize just about any damage done to them (short of complete meltdown), and if the doll is in such bad shape that he/she can't be sold, there's always someone willing to adopt the pieces for free.

I just saw that movie. It would have been soo neat if they'd have put some stuff about the dolls into a features section, even if it had to be sub-titled.
I can't, personally, see myself throwing away any one of my dolls for any reason. I would probably see damage or discoloring as an opening for customizing in a different direction than usual ... modding, dyeing, painting, etc. I would even make new pieces if it were necessary. I tend to buy my dolls slowly. I go back over weeks and try to be sure I really really love the face. If I can't put her aside, then I made plans for purchase. After all that, it would be like dumping your favorite pet along side the road after you took all the time to adopt them.

As long as they weren't exposed to something that made them extremely dangerous for humans to be around (sarin, anthrax, radioactive materials, VX - especially VX - other ogranophosphates, etc), then...no way in hell.
If they were...well, I'd probably have to think about the possibility of being able to decontaminate them or not. If it was absolutely impossible to do without serious health risk, then yes, I would probably throw them out.
But can't imagine how my dolls would get exposed to/contaminated by something like that.

No. VinylFaerie dyes dolls so anything to do with color could be fixed. If it was broken someone who mods dolls could fix it or create something new.

Hm I'm probably the odd duck here. If it wasn't because of the *price* I would have no problems throwing out a doll I didn't like for some reason. We have a VERY yellowed Zaoll here, and... Well I keep alternating between "I really need to pluck her apart and bleach her" and just being irked at her colour. We bought her second hand and if I'd known just HOW yellowed she'd got (which we didn't really realised until she came home and we could see her with the other dolls)... I wouldn't have bought her. I'm not big into customization, the mere thought of taking her apart is enough to make me consider if it's "worth the bother"...
OTOH Zaolls are IMO some of the prettiest dolls ever made (plus she's my daughter's doll) so I wouldn't throw her out... she's just sitting here on the couch as a permanent reminder of someting I really should get myself together and do. A daily nagging conscience *L*
But other than that.. I'm too old to really buy into the whole possessed/dolls-with-souls/spirits thing. Probably because I don't believe in any of this religious/spiritual stuff in the first place...

i could never throw out any of my dolls, no matter what might happen to them. if something went wrong, i'd try to fix it, and if i couldn't, i'd just think of them as injured or ill. i don't keep them as show pieces, after all. they're here to make me happy, and Sas could do that even if all his limbs fell off

alright call me strange but... i'd never throw out my boys... ever.... even it if were smashed into bits and pieces and ground up.... i'd just get a nice little urn shaped vase or jar and put it's pieces in it and put it on the mantle.... like you'd do with remains of a loved one... or a pet... i mean cause i know for some they're just dolls and then for others they're like companions... or i'd go to that temple in japan and have a ceremony for it then have it's remains put in an urn or something...

Heh.. Actually.. now that I've mulled it over.. I've come to the answer that.. NO.. I coulnd't *throw out* a doll. No matter the price. Seraphina's answer sorta hit me right in the face.. because.. I'm actually insanely attached to material things.... As in... I can't even throw out old clothes I *know* I'm never gonna fit into again... (I sew those into dolls clothes though so at least they're doing good, somehow) so.. no I probably wouldn't be able to throw out a doll I didn't like...
But I could sell it. At least I think I could....

I would try to paint it, or keep the parts around I've been wanting to have anatomy models for my dolls so I would mod them so that they had little organs and such...
Wow, now I want to spare doll parts :P

If one of my dolls ever got damaged badly, I would probably send them to an amazing modder like onegreyelephant to do whatever they want to it to breathe new life into the doll as to speak XD
But if there was a doll that I didn't really want, I'd most likely just leave it inside a closet or something and let time go by if I decided to not to sell the doll.

o.O oh no I could never throw out a doll, no matter how broken, knowing me I would buy an Urn and put the pieces in it. But that's just me.

That's what I thought of right away too! "no! no, Mina will...she'll come for you! don't throw dolls in the trash! D:" But honestly, unless a doll was absolutely shattered to pieces I wouldn't chuck it. I get too attached ha ha. Plus if it was only the body I would just keep the broken one for modding practice(read: I would rip it apart and see what I could do with it) and buy a new one!
