Resin: Which resin is your favorite in your experience?
I'm curious.
In your colllecting experiences (whether that be purchases, friends' dolls or meet-ups), which resin was the one that stuck out as a favorite for you? Why?
How important is the resin feel and resin look for you?
Would you purchase from a particular company due to resin quality or are there more important factors?

This is a hard one, because I like different ones for different reasons. I've not had any experiences that would keep my from buying a doll due to the resin, and the most important thing to me is that it will hold up over time. I do love French resin--when I opened my Uni Limited's box for the first time, I was blown away. I also like the silky smooth texture and colors of my Bobobie's, but the heft of my Volks hybrid, Serendipity hybrid and AoD are very nice too (though when you're walking around a lot at a doll meet, sometimes light weight isn't so bad, lol). However, if I had to pick a favorite it would be my French resin Unidoll--l like the warm glow it has, as well as his heft. It does yellow more than the typical NS urethane, but IMO, he still looks lovely.

I've only come into physical contact with dolls from 3 different companies/producers, but I gotta say that the traditional Custom House resin is my favorite. It's very matte in appearance but has a nice satin texture and very rarely have I ever heard of resin imperfections from this company. I can only say this about the old body resin, though, because I'm unsure if they're still using the same resin formula since they switched over to the new bodies. They look different to me as far as the matte-ness of the bodies but that could just be the lighting in the pictures.

Where is a good (quick, easy, complete) place to get a description of the different kinds of resins and who uses what? I saw one description that made reference to "French resin" and "urethane resin." what is the difference? What does Volks use?

From all the dolls I have, I tend to prefer the Dollzone resin, it feels solid yet light. I like the Bobobie silkyness too. My least favorite is the Domuya resin. :/

Volks uses urethane. French resin is more translucent which is what gives it it's glow, it does also have the tendency to yellow faster, though it's not an issue to me. Companies all have their own resin formulas which is why you get differences in weight, color, and texture from different companies--resin can also vary a bit from batch to batch within the same company. The regular urethane is the more common...Unidoll has used French resin for their 60cm LEs, you can get French resin Narins, and my brain seems to be blanking out at the moment--there are more than that that do have an option for French resin, I just can't dredge the names up at the moment. It will say on the company websites which resin they use.

It turns out that resin is very important to me. I sold a Puki because I just didn't care for the yellowish cast and shiny smoothness of her BW Fairyland resin. I've been disappointed, like Taco, to find that some companies change their resin from batch to batch/year to year. I had a Customhouse Petite Ai from around 2005 whose resin I LOVED (it was very comparable to Volks) but when I got my hands on one of their more recent offerings (a BW Ange Ai) I was horrified to find that the resin was rough and significantly lighter and just not nice to the touch at all. Then there's Unoa - as far as resin goes, she was much shinier and lighter than I usually prefer, but since she came as a kit I wasn't too bothered by it - I managed to mattify the resin by sanding and rubbing with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser before putting the doll together.
I'm very happy with Volks resin so far (I have dolls by them from 2007 through now) and my BW BlueFairy resin. What I am looking for in a resin: dense, smooth to the touch but with a slight matte finish, with a significant heft, and consistent color from batch to batch.
Since I'm so picky, I pretty much want to stick with Volks and BlueFairy and only look at their dolls when seriously considering a new purchase. I recently bought a Felixdoll Brownie, but I looked at TONS of owner pics and reviews beforehand to determine if their resin would be satisfactory, and probably wouldn't have taken the chance even then (but the price was just too good to pass up)... now that she's arrived, I can fully endorse that company as well - perfect resin (nice texture and color and density). Cute dolls, too

I know that some dolls just feel better in my hands... the weight and the feel of smoothness or a slight "tooth" to the resin... I haven't found any that I really dislike except one: I had a R&D angel that I just didn't care for.

I am no conisieur of resin nuances, but I do love the Dollzone Doll 's and I have an older Narae that I adore. She is white and a bit rough to the texture, but very beautiful.
Also, I love the feel of Latidoll.

I've only handled dolls from four companies, and by far Volks has my favourite resin. As others have mentioned, it has a nice weight, feel, colour, and is consistent from batch to batch (except for sunlight, but I loooove sunlight anyways). I rather like BlueFairy's resin, and have no problem with Crobidoll's either - it's a little lighter, but not enough to turn me off. My new SSDF Abadon, though, feels lighter and much more brittle to me, and while I still love him, I'd definitely rate LUTS resin much lower than Volks for that.

This is great info. for a new collector, thank you. I am glad to hear Bobobie is well spoken of as I love their little Nissa Elfkins; I am curious how the blue, lavender and other colors might change over time.

I love my Domuya flexi 2, normal skin, resin. It is so silky smooth and has the nicest weight to it. I can't believe how flawless the finish is. I didn't pay extra for seam sanding or anything and she is perfect, no seams, just wonderful to touch!

I have to say, the prettiest resin, to me, is French resin of 5StarDoll. Its silky smooth and translucent. It gives my girl a bit of a glow. Sometimes, I feel other resins are too flat-toned, even with blushing, while french resin gives off its own.

For me, mmm... I've only really had dolls from 2 companies but from what i've felt/touched Soom resin is way more expensive looking/feeling. It feels like porcelain with a bit of plastic sort of thing... while Dollzone felt like mostly plastic, plus it seemed to get dirty quicker, but stains came off easier. I think I preferred Soom resin, but Dollzone dolls pose well. Mmmm... Soom wins my vote for now until I get a doll from another company. I have a few heads coming i'll see how they feel/look. I like this topic btw ^^

This is a pretty informative discussion for a noob like myself. I only have one doll from one manufacturer (Peak's Woods) So it's interesting to read about other types of resin being used.

Dollshe. I really love the rough feeling of the resin. It feels like resin, not plastic. Too smooth resin always makes me feel like it's plastic, but little roughness is sooo awesome.

I agree with kihaku, I like the roughness. LittleMonica has my alltime favorite resin. Its light and sort of rough to the touch. It doesnt tend to smush to chip in thin areas like other resins ive come across(iple, fairyland, leeke, etc)
Most resins feel like candycane, LM resin feels more like those candy hearts ^^
