View Full Version : Question! Naked Dolls in Public--Taboo?
My very first time seeing someone else with a doll was an at anime convention that I was working at artist alley. It was a younger girl, maybe 14 or 15 carrying around a 1/3 boy doll, but he was completely naked!
I felt a little embarrassed for the doll and I figured it was probably because she was really excited to have a new doll and couldn't afford or hadn't received any clothes for him yet. However, a naked doll in public seems like a slightly distasteful thing to do. Am I wrong?
Do you ever carry around a naked doll and what do you think when others do it?

I always at least put some boxers on or a tee also, if it is a girl. I keep spare clothes just for this reason. Me and my friends often take dolls to the fabric store together, so we need something to cover them. Its also great if its something minimal or easy to take off in case we need measurements.
I find that mildly disturbing that her parents (assuming they were with her or knew.) allowed it.
But I think it's best to always have at least something on the doll...be it underwear or a robe of sorts.
I'm fairly certain she was alone unless her parents were on another floor of the hotel just chilling around... for a few hours. I never once saw her talk to anyone else, but she perched the doll on her arm and carried him around naked for three days straight. Unfortunately, the conventions I got to never have any doll-related events or sales.
Besides, half the fun of owning a doll is dressing them up right? At least that's what I'm hoping to get one for. I just love the idea that a doll can wear things I could never wear (in public) and look pretty.

Even though I don't consider a naked doll shocking or taboo, I don't think it is cool or pretty neither.
Of course, one can take pics of them naked or half-dressed, for a story, or just as artistic photography. But carrying them around like the factory made them? Is a bit... boring.
The exception would be if the doll has nice body painting/blushing and some whole body tatoos. Then I could imagine carrying it around naked to show off its tatoos :)
But maybe the kid you met was thinking that she was being very shocking and taboo. Some kids like being rebels.
That's a really good point. I thought maybe she was just really excited and decided to bring him out even though she hadn't gotten clothes for him yet. Sadly though, no one around here has dolls and I have yet to see another one at a convention.

I would have at least wrapped a towel around the poor boy's privates o.0 I mean, it's not really taboo. It's still a doll, and the genitals are never really THAT anatomically correct. But it is a bit rude to the doll's character, unless he's you know, some sort of public exhibitionist and enjoys shocking people lol.
I think it depends on the situation. Doll nudity doesn't bother me in the slightest, but not all people are used to bjds who are actually anatomically correct. It seems that covering the doll in some way when out amongst mixed company would be the more polite thing to do. Now at a meetup to do comparisons or show interested parties the body sculpt, that's a different thing and completely acceptable in my mind. Even if a meetup is in a fairly public place, it's still possible to be relatively discreet about it, if the doll in question is in the middle of a group of people who are camped out somewhere.
It would bother me to carry my dolls around naked for two other reasons as well:
One is that dolls are a very visual medium, and things like clothing are clues as to the doll's character and personality. While you can do great very expressive nude shoots, just carrying around the naked doll doesn't really say anything.
The other issue is that it would be out of character for all but maybe one of my dolls to be running around naked, and it really bothers me to have them dress or act in a way that is not in character.

Not only that, but they will get dirtier faster with no clothes to protect them.

I think the issue with naked dolls in public comes down to how people around the naked doll are affected. I know several doll owners, let alone the general public, that are uncomfortable around naked dolls. They understand the necessity of removing clothing for the sake of measurements or to change clothing, but dislike dolls just "sitting around" that way.
At the very least, I think its inconsiderate of someone to haul around a naked doll in front of people that are unprepared for seeing something that can be so unsettling. So yeah, I think its a bit taboo. For the reasons I've stated and the good ones in the posts previous as well, doll owners just shouldn't do it.

*sigh* it's not like this girl is 2 years old with a naked Barbie, I think it's a little rude to carry around a naked doll when you're old enough to know it might make people uncomfortable. Now at doll meets, I can understand someone having to change and outfit or something. I totally agree that she should have at least wrapped something around the doll.:|

I'm choosing my words really carefully right now. I find it distubing. It's like guls207 said, it's not like a Barbiedoll, these dolls (well, most of them) actually have genitals. You could at least cover him up a bit.
