View Full Version : Question! Do they stand on their own really?
DanceCat

I was taking for granted that these dolls stand on their own, holding most poses on their own while doing so. However, I believe I have seen a doll with velcro on the bottom of her shoes and I've seen other dolls that are being held with doll stands and I'm thinking "Why does this doll need a stand, don't they stand on their own?"
Can some of you help me out with this?
Thank you,

Some stand very well on their own. I have them. Some don't. I think they can be restrung to stand and not be floppy. Also, depending on the pose and length of time you want the doll to be like that---I have stands just to protect my investment if I want them to stand securely for complete display.

klum*9 sums it up nicely! I have some dolls that stand quite well - but I'm not inclined to leave an expensive doll in a position to topple when I'm standing at a distance, seeing them only through a camera lens.
My older dolls only stand with great effort on my part (and tend to collapse without advance warning.) This is even after "wiring" and self-standing kits and treatments.
I almost always use stands or furniture when shooting more than one no matter how well they stand.

Well so far the only doll I have who honestly can't stand on her own is my Type 1 CP lishe. Sometimes her knees pop up even while she's on a stand.
Isabel doesn't stand well in high heels as she doesn't have high heel feet but in lower heels she's fine.
My Volks dolls all needed serious tightening before they would stand, but once adjusted they are fine. Oh and my Pipos Curo has big head syndrome but I can usually get him standing too.
I use stands depending on their shoes but most of the time not.

The only doll I have who doesn't stand on their own is my AOD Qian. She came unstrung and I had to string her myself so that has alot to do with it. I would never leave a doll standing on their own unattended though.

Oh and Pip. He's sitting in a chair.

Both mine stand on their own (A Volks Elena and a SOOM SG Lupin).
I do put them on stands for sewing purposes, though, as they've to stand on a table that's wobbling from a serger being operated and me shoving things around on a regular basis.
Not to mention it makes it a bit easier for me to fit clothes on them with pins, and drape cloth and see how it looks, even if Adrian looks really dumb wearing a nice silk shirt and no pants right now because I'm, um, still putting the pants together.
I wonder if his ass is getting cold.

I don't have any problems getting mine to stand on their own, but I had a lot of trouble with it when I was new to the hobby. It took me a while to find their centers of balance, but it got easier with practice. I wouldn't trust any of my bigger ones to stand on their own for any length of time unattended, though.

All Mine stand quite well now. Used to have troble with Luts old body, but I sloved the problem with filling piece. Even though, because My BJDs normally stays on the top of low cabinet in my room, and it's still quite high for the BJDs, so most of time they'll just sit on their sofa especially the big ones, and if they stand, they will lean on either the sofa or the wall to prevent accident fall.

My Serendipity sharmin really likes to fold over and smash her face into the ground ( or any other unfortunate dolls infront of her) and does so with much gusto. I have tried wiring and sueding and nothing has really helped. She still topples over from time to time. My Pipos Bao on the other hand is pretty easy to get standing, even with Big Head syndrome. :) It really does depend on the doll.

My Bobobie Weylin stood straight out of the box, but my Resinsoul Long wont stand at all. I have had Weylin longer than Long, so I think it is more about me getting used to Long's joints and finding his center of balance.

Personally, it makes me nervous to have my dolls free-standing. It doesn't take a lot for a tall, thin doll to fall over - tight stringing tension or not.
That said, I had a Potpourri from Domuya and she was a pain to stand, but there were also a whole lot of joints in that doll. My personal observations, and there are those who may disagree (and know a lot more than me!), are that the more joints a doll has the less likely it will be to stand on its own without some adjusting.
My Volks isn't as flexible as my Domuya was but with the Kips and the fewer joints she is a lot easier to position.

I never remember where my stands are when it's time to do a photostory. So I freshen the gluesueding on whatever joints I know are the problems on whichever dolls, make sure they're in shoes stable for them, and go for it.
And sometimes i have to take a "troublemaker" aside and give it a combination good-talking-to / bribery session / series of threats. Strangely, that seems to work, since usually the one who decides to "drop out" will fall backwards and hurt nobody but himself.
And elphsnt has a good observation. Some dolls like the flexi-bodies, or some 70cm dolls, are high-maintenance if you want them to stand!

All my guy's stand on their own, but as I live in a very old house that shudders every time a big vehicle goes past, I never leave them unattended. And if I have them standing on a high surface I either have cushions & pillows on the floor under them, or make use of my DH as a spotter.;)

All dolls can stand on their own.
Sometimes its takes more time, patience, etc depending on the doll.
My Adelheid is a Soulkid and they're known for not posing too well (the heavy torsos are one of the major reasons why). However, as long as I position her legs in a certain way, she'll stand. She is a tad difficult to balance though. Also she stands significantly better with shoes (even heeled ones) rather than in her feet.
Sueding helps some dolls stand much better as well.

I find that the larger and heavier a doll the harder it is for them to stand.
I have various sizes and although they will all stand (some a lot easier than others!) there are only a few that I would trust to stand for any length of time, and they are my smaller, lighter dolls. Puki's go without mentioning, they are so tiny I think they stand better than sit! My MNF boy stands on my shelf always without a stand. He has new *very tight* jeans so he cant sit anymore even if I wanted him to:D but I really don't fear him falling, he is solid as a rock up there.

Mine all stood great when new out of the box. After I started taking them apart they did not stand so well. (I donft think I have ever re-strung them as tight as they came from Volks.) However, I do let them all stand around on the floor now when assembled. They canft fall far, but I do keep in mind that I could louse a finger or nose that way when posing them. If they were up on a shelf I would use a doll stand just to be sure. After spending as much as these guys cost, I would not leave it to chance that they would not fall. When we are out at a meet up I do not let them stand. They sit when not being held.

All but one of my dolls are Volks and they're pretty steady. I've left them free-standing for days on end, whether I'm in the house or not, and they've stayed upright. Most of the time though if they're not sitting I've got them propped against a wall - credit to Volks, my Emma kept her feet through an earthquake that way :sweat.
A lot of the tricks in standing a doll I think are in knowing how the particular body works, where their centre of gravity is, and balancing them accordingly. And keeping their stringing tight, which in my experience becomes more vital the bigger and more articulated the doll is. My SD17 used to tip over if I breathed too heavy, but now he's had his string tightened, he stands like a dream.

I think the dollstand is only when you want to display the doll, for example in the cupboard. Sometimes, a little bit shake can make them fall off, too. no matter what, they are 'doll', if we 'push' it a little bit, they don't have any balance to counterpart...
I don't know how to explain it. but if you have the doll yourself, you will understand it.
for photoshoot, i don't like using dollstand but i keep my eyes on her so she won't fall off.
i put her back in her box, though after photoshooting...I don't like displaying or playing with her too much. it's too expensive, so i treasure her (^.^)

The only doll I have at the moment is one that I made myself. When of my main aims was to have her able to stand unaided... I think it's more fun for posing if the doll can stand and adds to the variety of poses.

I know that Soom Super Gem dolls stand pretty well on their own. They have this locking knee piece...I dunno how to describe it...but it is usually right behind the knee joint and it usually keeps the knee in a stationary position so that the doll can stand unless they are strung too loosely. ^_^

My Dollzone boy stands just fine with very little fussing, but I wouldn't leave him unattended, he tends to like to take a nose dive at the least convenient times... or most convenient, since he usually lands in my cleavage, so it's a matter of perspective.
My Puki takes a little more fussing, but that's more due to loose stringing at the moment.
Most people who use stands are usually leaving them upright for display for long periods, that I've seen. :)

I like to leave mine standing to see how long they'll stay put. I had Tian on one foot for about twelve hours before he finally fell. :) When I had my Soom Euclase in his giant bird feet, I left him standing for... three days? Something like that.
But I never leave them standing unattended when they're up high, or on a hard floor. Too risky. If there's no carpet, then I'll put pillows down beneath them. :)

Bobobies come loosely strung to minimise damage in transit, according to many. A tightening up of the strings are required as soon as they arrive.
I know that is one of the first things I will do when Aoife (1/4 girl Mei) arrives.
Followed by sueding.

When I first got Gabriella (Dollzone Aaron) her impulsivity drove me nuts! She was not very cooperative at all...kicking and buckling on a mere whim....but, after playing with her a while and bending her around and testing her limits...and finding her center weight...she has become a little more relaxed and surprisingly, she poses really well now. She can stand with both bare feet and in heels, and she doesn't even have 'high heeled feet'.
I am Ethan's (DOD DoC Too) second owner and he stood really well from the moment I got him...he's very laidback and easy going about the whole process.

Moswen and Jaiseki (AoD Chi & Min respectively) stood like rocks straight out of the box. Kys (CD Longway) is also a trooper and when I've got shoes on him, I think he could stand through an earthquake. Kijika (AoD/LE Doll collab) stands better after I sueded his knees and is pretty solid. Jolen (RS Jun) stands much better after tightening his leg strings and sueding his knees and hips, but I wouldn't trust him alone. Haniel (Cherish Chubby Demon) stands fine in bare feet and likely would in running shoes if he had some.
It takes a little patience to get dolls to stand and each doll, even if they're from the same company, has little quirks to make standing easier/more steady. Basically, you need to play with them to figure out what works best for each doll.

My DZ Feilian, Rico, stood fine when she was on her single-jointed body. Then I bought her a double-jointed one, and that's where the trouble started.
Her double-jointed body felt very very floppy to me when it first arrived. So I tightened up her stringing. It took me a while to realize I'd tightened too much, for she kept listing over to one side, twisting and falling over.
I replaced her elastic entirely, but apparently the elastic I chose wasn't heavy or thick enough, so she was even floppier than before. I finally replaced the string again, and now she can stand normally with just a bit of fiddling.
Vera, DZ Fei, who inherited Rico's single-jointed body, stands just fine barefoot or in shoes.
Xavier, Soom Lazule, was very floppy straight out of his shipping box, but that's normal. Just a little tightening and he was fine. The Soom locking knee joint helps a lot.

My CP girl can stand fine in shoes and barefoot. I had to loosen her strings for it to happen, though. Her kicky CP legs didn't help much at first. I found that sueding the knees and upper thighs really helped her in being able to stand.

Both my DZ Mo boy and my RS/BBB An stand pretty well. I know Liina (the An) came to my friend fairly loose, but she tightened him up before I got him, since she had him about a week before she descided he wasn't for her and sold him too me. Tanso however (thats the Mo) is a freaking champ. I have litterally just plopped him on his feet and without fussing with his knees ankles or anything he will stand, and won't move. He's just great like that. XD
I've never had a doll that wouldn't stand of it's own, even the ones I have that needs a re-stringing. My AOD R. Feng collapsed in in his knees quite a few times which would annoy me to no end >.< Used some hot-glue and that bug was fixed ^^

I have to make mention of Buddydoll here. I received my Julian on Monday and he is, bar none, the best standing doll I have ever played with! Plunked him down and no fiddling whatsoever he stood and he stands like a rock.
He kneels excellently as well and hold that pose wonderfully. A+++ to Buddydoll's engineering department!

Ryuichi has the [in]famous CP/Delf kicky leg, but when I stand him with his legs wide apart, in what I call "the rockstar stance," he usually stands like a rock...unless he's feeling impish! Then he'll try to fall when I least need him to!

I haven't experimented extensively because I am waiting on clothing and wigs to arrive but my DF Lyre is able to stand on his own. I tend to make sure his feet are firmly on the ground for balance and the ground has to be flat for it to work properly. He hasn't as yet toppled but I don't really leave him in a position for too long. My problem with him is more of the sitting up straight rather than the standing.

All mine stand on their own. The Fdoll body required heavy wiring in the knees, and many of them are sueded, but they'll all stand. I don't LEAVE them standing, but I never use stands for photoshoots or anything either. I have left my guy on the Fdoll body standing at a meet for hours and he was fine (post wiring, though) and my Dollzone minis also stand like rocks. The Minifees also stand great but take more fiddling to get there since they have so many extra parts.
If I'm doing a group photo I typically have some sit just for ease of dealing with it, but I also stand them in the order of steadiest to riskiest. Dollzones and the wired Fdoll/Delf first, followed by the Soulkid/MNF hybrid and the Minifees, then the Resinsoul tiny and Puki... generally ending with my older Dolkot mini, who likes to dive sometimes.

Most dolls will stand on their own. There are some that require sueding or wiring, which I don't consider "standing on their own." That said, I'd never leave any of my dolls for long periods of time standing even though all of my mine can stand on their own. There are plenty of elements (floor shakes, heavy walking, small earth quakes, etc) I can't control, and I'd rather not have the doll fall and chip something. :cry

All of my guys and girls stand fine, but the best are the Senior Delf body my Seimei uses, and the good old Volks SD13. I think those are the only ones I would leave unattended, and I still never do that. You just never know.
My Narae is also a very good stander. Zaolls are good, but it depends on how well they are strung, now that my Muse is getting a bit floppier, it's more difficult to get him to stand. My CP Chiwoozle and Glorydoll Louis are probably the worst, mainly because Louis has bad ankles, and my Chiwoozle tends to kick when he's strung tightly, and is difficult to stand when he's floppy. He can do it, though. All dolls can stand, some just take bit more getting used to and fiddling.

My dolls stand on their own well enough, but you don't really want anyone bumping into whatever they're standing on and crash to the floor.
I think it's better to keep them standing than sitting anyway because then the stringing doesn't get stretched out as much. I wouldn't trust them to stand by themselves for days on end without support though. :sweat No matter how awesome they are at balancing/standing.

My SD13 Heath stands fantastically but the others don't like to stand. :( My big girl has curved heel feet and she can actually stand great without shoes or in shoes made for flat feet...but she can't balance to save her life in high heel shoes. My other SD13 boy body seems really different from Heath's and it's pretty loose and floppy. My poor MSD has a Swarikko body and it just wants to sit cutely 24 hours a day. One of my summer projects is revamping them so they pose better. :)

My Unoa Sist's ankles are horrible! I took a bit of 'shoe goo'(I tested it first and it doesn't seem to harm the resin, it actually peels off easily if you decide you don't like it) and sueded her ankles as well as wired her legs and now she stands much better! I would never leave her unattended, just in case. She normally doesn't budge once I stand her these days.

All my dolls stand well, but none so well as my SSDF body. That boy can stand like a rock on my bed with all the blankets and quilts on it, while I'm sitting on the bed! And he stood like that right out of the box before I even sueded him!
One of my other dolls who is on an 2-part M-Line body used to be a terrible stander (real word?)... He was too top-heavy and his spine arched backward so once he was finally balanced he looked a little uncomfortable. I cut the lower part of the torso in half and made it into a 3-part torso, sanding out much ofthe thick internal resin to make him lighter. He stands like a dream now, but it did take a lot of work!

The only dolls that I was never able to stand consistently were a Domuya Flexibody Boy body (the original flexi body) and a Domuya Flexi Perennial Girl body. Really liked both bodies, they were so awesome at posing, but could not get them to stand for anything. Most anything else, I can get balanced without much trouble. Although I do agree that the EID boy ankles can be a real bear to mess with.

I have a Domuya Flexi body too... hate it. The one I have (Flexi-N I think) is just really badly designed, especially compared to my Minifees. There's no reason in this world why the lower leg and upper leg should twirl around independently of each other when they're in any position other than perfectly straight; and the channels seem too narrow to add wire, especially after I re-strung it with better string. I can make it stand briefly, but not well enough to get out of catching range. It's on my "to be replaced" list.

I've never had any trouble with the flexi bodies..at least not the male ones. ^^: I got a flexi-n to stand up on his tip toes. ^_^ He stood there for awhile too. ;p Granted he had been restrung and wired so that probably helped a lot. -nods-

My ImplStar Bosco stands like a rock no matter how I pose him (unless it's outside and there's an unexpected random gust of wind on a normally unwindy day xD). He stands with or without a knee bent, with or without shoes.. and I even got him to squat down with most weight on one foot.. the other had a heel up and the rest on the toes. The only shoes I can't do the squatting in is the platform boots I just bought, but haven't worked too hard to get it (as I was sitting on couch and lowering him down.. I might go play with the posability with those boots soon.)
The one thing I love about the body (and I fear I'm a bit spoiled with him... o.O I know from comparison of posing abilities.. I dislike Dollzone's arms posability, I hate how they snap into place and want to remain straight, even though they are also double jointed... geh sorry about little rant) is that once you get him in a pose... he doesn't give out over time.. I can keep him in a pose, even the squat for hours without him falling over. I even had him carrying my tiny for some hours on end and not even the arm that all her weight was on gave away nor did it mess with the center of balance and have him wanting to fall on the side that she was on. (He was holding her on a hip like how you'd generally carry a toddler)
