View Full Version : Reluctant to post photos of your dolls? Why?

I forget if I posted in this thread or not, but my opinion has changed in the last couple of days. Now I like taking pictures because I have a little model that I can pose almost anyway I want her to. But due to constraints I don't have a digi cam and so very often my pictures are put down for improper lighting, blurry pictures, and any other problem you can think of that comes from using a disposable camera. So now I'm really rethinking about posting pictures up cause it just hard to hear how much the pictures suck when they are the best I can do with what I got. I think in the future unless I think a picture is awesome it not gonna be posted for public opinion, minus the two local forums I'm part of as they don't go looking to put down the picture.:cry

I post pictures when I know they will be commented on. If they aren't great, I don't post them. Now, I post pictures of Purple everywhere just because I made her. XD

I don't post photos much as I never seem to have the time initially to dress my dolls, and secondly to take their photos. Also I don't have great photographic skills, and no wonderful props like some people do. However, I am looking forward to dressing my dolls for the holidays and posting photos.
I love looking at owner's photos and except for seeing the dolls in person it's the best way to really get to know a particular doll. I am often enabled to purchase the same doll due to seeing owner's photos. I just love seeing all of the different sculpts, faceups, clothing etc. and I am happy other owners share their dolls photos.

I'm rarely reluctant to post photos of my doll to my LJ, but to forums/other intensely public venues I feel like I need a reason to post them. They can't just be photos that I snapped randomly, they need to be something I've put hard work into and want to share with everyone, not just my friends... or it needs to be a special occasion.

I mostly lack pictures to show the world because I am an incredibly lousy photographer.
That'll change when my husband starts helping me (he's pretty good at it) but for now I just don't have any pictures because I manage to accidentally crop the tops of doll heads off.

I don't have many pictures to post because they never come out as well as I'd like. I also don't tend to post that often because it bugs me when people don't comment. I can take them for my own pleasure, and I do- I have many more on my computer than I ever post. But it's sort of pointless to post up to a gallery just to have nobody really respond, and that's what happens most of the time.

I don't post as much as I would like partly because I don't have much time. Between work, kids, husband, animals and the other things I like to do I find my time is limited. Setting up scenes and lighting takes time, especially since I'm easily distracted. Then when I get back to taking the pics the light has changed and the moment has gone.
However, I have slowly gotten together a couple of setups for my dolls but I don't have them completely finished. As I work on them they keep evolving and remain in a constant state of "not yet completed". I have posted pics, so I'm not reluctant to, but the more I take photos the pickier I am about what looks good and I usually end up chucking them. One day I will reach a happy medium between time and technique.

I sometimes post pictures of my smaller dolls, but after posting some of my first BJD I saw that people simply stopped reading my LJ because, as they said, I was not "normal". There was one thing good in it - I saw the true face of some of my acquaintances. Besides, I am not a professional in taking good pictures, there's always bad lighting and no sets. So I guess I am more afraid that my doll would not be interesting to anyone but me :)

I like seeing photos of other people's dolls, so I post to give other's the same. I figure you have to get to give, right? Owner's photos are so different from site pictures, and in an environment where you are buying off the internet without being able to see the product it's great to see the real thing. Also I get some amazing clothing/wig sources.
Hate the crickets, though.

My camera sucks big time, and no one really pays attention to my dolls, they are not that popular or that limited, but I have tons of pics that no one will see of them unless someone asks.

Due to spending 10 years straight on a specific medication, I have very shakey hands and cannot take pictures without flash, even on a tripod. Flash + dollies = HOLY MOTHER OF REFLECTION.

I like taking photos, but I usually don't have a lot of time. I usually end up getting these one-off random shots and maybe posting those in my journal.
However, I'd like to do more photos, especially now since we are now up to 7.5 residents in the house. The .5 is an Obitsu head named Blasphemy..she was my first faceup, which was kind of scary in and of itself, but now with this fur wig I got a hold of recently, she looks like a scarfaced Bellatrix LeStrange..
Maybe after Dolpa is paid off! :(
I'm just lazy. And I get home from work after dark right now, so it gets really hard to take creative indoor shots with bad lighting. :oops
I also will admit that I'd rather post pictures on my LJ where my friends can see them and seem to get something out of them than on a huge forum where they get lost in the shuffle in .2 seconds. I'm trying to work on it though, if only because as a total voyeur I like to know what people are doing with their dolls and feel like I should reciprocate.

Does your camera have a timer? You can use that to take non-flash photos and you won't be touching the camera while it's taking the picture. I use my timer when I'm taking low-light pictures with my tripod, and it works well.

I don't really post many pics of mine, because I never think they're worthy enough for posting. And those that I think are, as it's been said, I hear that cricket chirping away! lol. Not that anyone needs to post to my gallery pictures or anything.. the idea I get a view is good. ^_^; But I'm always so self conscious about posting them because I always think if that hair is out of place, it just isn't a good picture. :p ..
I usually hesitate when posting my dolls' photos, especially online, sometimes because I either have nothing new or significant to show with them (I just decided to take a photo randomly, for example) or because I was a bit... shy? unsure? But the biggest reason why I don't post much pictures is because I want to feel happy with my dolls, with photographing them, playing with them, etc. Once you post photos, sharing your experiences with your dolls is fun but sometimes I think the satisfaction you get from sharing is not worth becoming unsure or, sometimes, being criticized, and unhappy (dissatisfied). It may not be true for the strong people but that's just my opinion. And although I speak like I'm very strong and convicted with my opinions, I'm not really. There are times that I become influenced by the opinion of others, which is a good trait IMO because it lets you see the side of those who see differently from you, but I am also afraid that, maybe, I'll start feeling like something is lacking from my dolls because I shared my dolls and my experiences to others.

I'm really reluctant because most of my doll play time (and hence picture taking time) is at night, and I don't have the best lighting.

I don't take photos very well and currently, Haikiri's eyes are VERY difficult to take a good picture of. Until I get better, I won't be posting many photos. I do share ones that are either silly or I'm actually pleased with.

How RUDE of those people to offer to buy them! I can hardly believe that people could be so inconsiderate..
ANYWAY. xD The only reason I'm ever hesitant is if I'm not 100% satisfied with how the picture turned out. I'm very picky about photography. :P

I have never posted pictures of my dolls either, and its unlikely I ever will. Like someone already said, it seems that if your dolls aren't "sew gawth" or boys for that matter people aren't as interested in looking at them. :/ Oh well.
And a $50 offer for a doll?! :0 What a bargain! That person should be punched in face for being stupid and insulting.

Yeah, he/she either, did it on purpose to offend the owner, or is really REALLY "ignorant"
Either way, it's still rude. T_T;

I have gotten unsolicited offers for a couple of my dolls, namely my colored BC elves. Usually they are MUCH MUCH less than I paid for the doll. My dolls are mine, if I wanted to sell them I would post them. I don't go around asking to buy other's dolls and it really irks me when I get those emails and PMs.
As far as photographing my dolls, I post pictures a lot. I posted a bunch of stories over a period of a few months on Zone of Zen, I brought them here in one massive day of posting. It wasn't until I reposted my pictures that I started noticing fingers, bad lighting, props going astray... I find I have to look back at my photos after some time to notice what I can change about them. I then see the areas I need to improve. It is difficult when I work during the daylight hours and then have no natural light to shoot in. The more I shoot, the more familiar I become with my camera and what it can and cannot do.

Though I may get crazy photostory/shoot ideas and sometimes carry them out, I rarely post them. Mainly because I hate having to resize each one individually and rely on an online service to do so. Also, I get discouraged and annoyed when I go through so much trouble to make them look good, post them and maybe recive one or two comments from friends or people who are still in the "comment on every post" phase and nothing else. I'd like to have critisim, or at least a "cool photos" once in a while. *shrug* But perhaps I'm just a lazy attention hog. :sweat

Pretty interesting to see that the majority of people all have similar reasons why they don't post many photos. Ah well, count me in for all those reasons as well: laziness, lack of MAD SKILLZ, shyness, perfectionist, total and utter boringness in content. :oops
I also have trouble actually getting my pictures to ... well, capture my dolls the way they look to me IRL. I don't know if they look really beautiful to me in person because they're my dolls and I'm seeing them with Glasses of Love (tm), but when I take my photos, it's like... suddenly their "expressions" change and it's not in a good way. orz I have this problem the most with my Seimei. ... stupid van...
I'm honestly not terribly interested in comment count--none of my posts have ever gone very far, and I think only Axel has made it to two pages on DoA and that's cause he's Axel and the comments consisted of just that lol. I'd rather have one good solid comment either critiquing or praising the picture, than just a lot of comments going "oh so cute!"
That's also why, when I have time to look at photo galleries, I don't comment often. I don't want to comment "oh, so cute!" because that seems like meaningless fangirling that didn't cost me anything. (although i guess that might make some people who feel their picture threads are a bit silent feel better?) I rather write a comment that lets the owner know how much I appreciated them sharing their piece.
BUT THEN BREVITY IS THE SOUL OF WIT and god knows I know not the meaning. lol tl;dr?? =(
In the end though, my dolls are really for me. I like staring at them more in real life than through the lens of a camera.

I work over an hour's drive away from home five days a week so I've not much time left for photoshoots of my dolls. Plus that beautiful cricket sounds tells me that i've sometimes a singular vision when it comes to my dolls. Plus sometimes I think it's bad when I've got more photos of my dolls than my children.
Since I don't think of my dolls in terms of stories I really don't do photo stories, though sometimes I can come up with an interesting idea theme for a photo. I don't usually read photo stories because they usually remind me of Soaps (which I can't stand) or the characters are heavily into alternative lifestyles. I did see one set up on an LJ as a diary type of story, and that one I've read and liked.
I enjoy posting on deviantart. It seems like a good fit for some of the pictures I come up with, plus we also like to play with photoshop with some of the pictures. My hubby is good with finding some way to play with a picture in photoshop.

(although i guess that might make some people who feel their picture threads are a bit silent feel better?) I rather write a comment that lets the owner know how much I appreciated them sharing their piece.
Honestly? Having been in the "silent" thread category more times than not is a deterrent to my posting photos of my dolls. I don't consider myself someone who needs a lot of feedback or attention-or is especially sensitive or needy, but I put a lot of work into my shoots and styling. If noone digs them enough to comment, but feels the need to gush all over the place about somebody's blurry, child like shoots with doll's that look like they were just pulled out of a dirty clothes basket...hey whatever, I get the message.
I guess if you don't have the "in" higher priced dolls that everyone wants to see, that is to be expected. It is disappointing that I don't feel I can really share the photography/styling part of the hobby in BJD forums, but like Ruaki said, I enjoy looking at my dolls and sharing my doll photography with some friends that are not BJD collectors, but that enjoy looking at my shoots. That is good enough for me.
I do enjoy commenting on other people's work that really moves me. I don't see much constructive criticism going on in doll forums, so leave the gushing over everything that comes up to these people's friends or support groups.

Unbelievable! George gets cricket noises? in my book, he's a celebrity. Of course, I rarely cruise the galleries on forums. I prefer the smaller groups too.
Mostly, I don't post pictures because I haven't bothered to get a Photobucket account. I'm such a Luddite, but it's the truth. I post on Yahoo groups, because they host my pictures online.:sweat

I don't post them because when I have, the cricket noise has been overwhelming.
I post in smaller venues like their LJ or their website.
I don't do goth or any of the popular elsewhere types of shoots. I just like posting nice pictures of the dolls. Since they seem not to be the fashion elsewhere, I don't bother posting them there... (see my rant about inflicting content on uninterested viewers ;) )

I thought you have a good point that there isn't much constructive criticism going on in doll forums, but then again, the poster might not want constructive criticism. If they want something like that, they will post their pictures in the critique section. Posting in the gallery is more light hearted, I guess. If the viewers don't like the pictures, they just don't comment.
Sometime people like the pictures they see but don't really have anything much to say. That's when the "How cute!" comments come in. It's fine to gush :), it shows that you're taking the time to tell the poster that you like their pictures.
For me, I sometimes keep certain photos to myself or only post it on my LJ because they're either:
a) Not great in quality
b) Shows too much of my personal life (like too much of my house in the background)
or
c) Random people won't understand the photos/photostories because it'll be out of context (it'll require too much explanations in order for it to make sense. I confused people with this before).

I've been afraid to post pictures, because I don't have the time to pose them. Also I'm new to the hobby and can't get them to cooperate yet. I still love them and play with them. I'm thinking of outfits right now since I just started and they barely have any clothes to photograph them in.

I would post pics...but I managed to leave my camera at the last meet....at someone else's house.
I'd say I'm not reluctant to post photos of my dolls in general, just on certain sites?
I'm a complete and total Flickr whore, so I pretty much have photos of my resins uploaded there every couple of days. I love taking photos of them, and Flickr works well in terms of being a backup storage for my photos, and also for the community aspect; I've made some good friends there who appreciate all things resin! :D
I tend to post less on LJ and DoA (although I have started to post more now in both), mainly because I'm lazy. :XD There's so many posts on DoA that sometimes, a new thread can get swallowed up so quickly, and not everyone scrolls through 'x' amount of pages to look at gallery posts. And LJ? I just wasn't used to it before. LOL.

I have in the past spent three hours setting up and doing a shoot and then editing the photos only to decide they're really not that interesting and not posting any of them, or maybe one or two. It has to do with personal standards of quality. And I still end up thinking a lot of my photos are kinda boring. ^^;
Reading about owners who stop posting photos or leave the hobby because they don't get comments (either fawning or critiquing) or not the right comments is a huge turnoff. Who likes a whiny attention-seeker, especially if it's attributed to not having a popular/limited/expensive/brand name doll? There's a view count that will tell you how many people have viewed the thread. Posting to a forum, there will always be a few people, at least. I frequently get no comments on my pictures, whether it's on LJ or DoA or wherever, but at the last meet I went to, a girl looked at my doll and said, "hey, I recognize him from DoA." Out of that huge forum, she remembered him. It was awesome.

I have never been into taking pictures, I think photography is a hobby that I'm not into it. I have found that some people like taking pictures and others don't, maybe I'm lazy. I have to get my husband or daughter to take pictures for me. Hence no photos from me.

You know, I can kind of relate to what you are saying. I keep telling myself I need to take the time to take pictures, but not just of my dolls; of my gardens, my cats and my son -- to send to my Grandmother. I just get distracted too easy and it becomes more a laziness factor. Too much trouble to drag out the camera, try to find good light, set up a scene, bla, bla, bla.
Also, you hit it right on as far as photography also being a hobby. Many of the people in the group are SUPER photographers and actually got into BJD's to supplement the photo hobby. Once upon a time when photos were still taken on film I had a really nice Minolta 35 mm camera. I loved that thing. (I'm showing my age here) I got it in college -- I worked in the camera dept of JCPenney covering the clerks vacation and part of the deal was he taught me all about cameras and taking photos. I was hooked. I used to take the most gorgeous pictues which that camera. I still have close-up photographs of the beautiful huge flowers they had in Puerto Rico I saw for my graduation trip and I have wonderful pictues of the roses in my garden from my first home my hubby and I bought, including some you so nice you can see the raindrops on the petals. I had that camera for MANY years. When it broke I was heart sick, but it was old and the company said they couldn't fix it because they no longer even made the parts! After that hubby bought me another newer model which I used. Then came digital.
I have two different digital cameras and try as I might my pictures suck. Both cameras I've had for a few years so maybe I need to get something brand new and easy, I dunno. My son's friends mother came over with her new one and snapped a picture of my kitty dolls and it was perfect. She took it in my bedroom and they were in the dollhouse. I've NEVER been able to take a picture in that room.
I guess taking pictures just isn't a priority for me anymore. I even have a little printer. Course I don't know the first thing about doing any "photoshop" work on them and the whole process of having to download them and just put them into a file and find them is too much trouble for me so we're back to the laziness factor. (unless I just stick the card in the printer and take what I have)
I'd be curious to know what type of small simple cameras people are buying now that take good pictures of their dolls. if I ever get the money to buy another I'd want something super small I can keep in my purse. I have noticed that all the new cameras don't have much zoom on them anymore. Mine has 40x zoom. Why have they done that? Sorry, that is way off topic and as usual I've babbled on way too much.

As far as unsolicited offers to buy... Just ignore them. People will always do ridiculous things, and by deciding not to post pictures because of a few dumb people, you're keeping other people from enjoying your dolls and not able to get feedback from the masses about how to improve your photography. Do the cons really outweigh the pros?
I usually post photos in my own blog, it's some kind of record of my dolls and my life^^
sometime i post them on doll forums, it's nice to get some feedbacks from others!
but most of the time, i am too lazy to resize the photos~XD

I agree with you sgtgeorgecarter, the cricket noise after posting is deafening sometimes. Sometimes it seems just better to keep the photos to oneself instead of facing a wall of indifference.
Please post photos! Don't mistake silence with indifference. I have looked at tons of photos, but almost never post anything because saying "wow, nice photo" over and over seems lame. I bet I am not alone in loving to browse the photos, even though I don't post comments.

I post mostly to my LJ because I know my friends want to know what I'm up to, they're my friends, after all, but I spare everyone else because my work with my doll is pretty generic. There's really only so many times people want to see a boy in a dress or an urban punk outfit.

I get really frustrated taking photos of my dolls. The light in my room is very poor and I'm just not a very good photographer. I love doing it, and I love posing my dolls and playing with them while I'm in the middle of a shoot, but it's like my interest dissipates entirely when it comes to uploading photos. They don't ever look the way I want for them to look, and it's a pain trying to make photos look better than they actually are. Frown! Boo! I guess I just need to practice more. I've been getting comments lately from a few different people on the photos that I have posted (mostly on things like my Myspace, FB, and LJ type places) requesting that I take more because my dolls are so pretty! So I'm trying my best to take more photos and attempting to stick to my "quality over quantity" credo. It's a fatiguing enterprise though.. Particularly when I get harangued to post more and then when I do.. I am met with total silence. :x

It's quite depressing when you post the photos online, and you don't really get the response you wanted. It makes you think that your photography skills are absolutely horrible, even if they're not.
That, and the fact that I don't feel that my photography is up to standard yet. I'll refrain from burning your eyes with my terrible photography and repetitive shots.
I think I might have one gallery thread on DoA, but it's oooold, the lighting in it was terrible, and yes I got crickets! I've always been shy with anything I do art-wise so it's not that unusual for me to be hesitant about sharing doll photos. I've since set high standards of quality for myself and because of that I don't feel like a lot of the photos I take are all that "presentable."
I do post a few photos around, though, in databases and my user album, or for meetups, and if I can help with photo requests of dolls I will. Just not full on photoshoots. Anything that could be a gallery thread is in my LJ because it's more private, only a few people see them, but I like that about my LJ. I do feel like I'm improving with photography though, and I just might have enough confidence after a future shoot to start a gallery thread in say, another year maybe, haha.

There's really a couple of reasons I don't post photography. I'm an artist, yes, but drawing is my forte. I'm a terrible photographer and though my camera isn't awful, lighting and setting and composition and the like absolutely whiz right past my head.
I'll occasionally post some pictures I feel came out halfway decent, but the cricket noise is usually so deafening that it's only once in a blue moon!
Besides that, I only have the one girl (though this'll be changing in January when I order Babs), and I'm always afraid people will get bored of her.

really REALLY terrible camera.
The photos are always horribly out of focus and over exposed...
and its not because I am a complete novice either, i've handled DSLR's and I do fine... so I doubt it is just because I have no idea how to handle a camera.

I have no problems with posting pictures of my dolls at BJD forums, my LJ or at my own website, but I am a little reluctant to post them at DeviantArt and Flickr. At this moment I sometimes upload them at DeviantArt, but I just pick a few, not all pictures from the shoot. I am afraid of art theft. I don't like other people using my pictures.
But at this moment I have only got 1 person stealing my pictures to bright them up with terrible stars and stuff for a blingee website, but when I send her an email about it, she gave credits at the pictures.
And because I get a lot of positive comments on my pictures, I still post them at DeviantArt. But if I encounter more art theft, I consider removing them all from my DA.

I'm extremely reluctant to post my doll photography because I'm really not confident in my work. I'm a beginner and I know it and a lot of the time I'll love a picture but someone will point out one little thing and instantly I hate it.
i know I am learning a lot and it's fairly obvious just by looking at my shoots from oldest to newest. I need to learn a lot more though, I don't even know what a lot of basic camera terms are! But most of all I need to learn to be more confident in my work and skills >_>

I tend to get overly picky about my photos and then I "chicken-out" and don't end up posting. I want to learn to take better pictures and I want to learn better computer skills for editing and so forth. Ahhh, so much to do and so little time.

There's actually a few reasons I don't post photos that often. It most because I don't feel like my doll is up to par. I'll take photos and then realise that my doll's wig is fizzy. So I want to get a new one or wig spray before taking photos. The eyes look dull. Better get different eyes. I already have taken photos in this [outfit, area, wig] I should get new [outfit, area, wig] before taking photos.
My camera is broken which doesn't help either. It does still take wonderful photos but the LCD screen is broken. So I am shooting blind. So basically I can take 100s of photos but only 1 or 2 would be usable because have no idea how the photo going come out.
I also judge my photos against people who I think are the best of the best. "Well, this photo turn out well. But it's still not as good as the ones I saw on [DoA, DoD, flickr]."

I am currently doll-less but I just ordered my first, an Elfdoll Red, through Junky Spot and can't wait to post photos! He should be here next week! I am pretty skilled with a camera though and can understand why others are reluctant to post photos but I just love this doll! I think I can deal with the unwanted offers to buy. I am very skilled in the art of saying NO! I have a little brother that has really helped me out with this throughout the years lol!

I have a nice camera, and I like taking pictures, but I hate editing them. Though, this has a lot to do with the fact that my computer displays pictures weirdly (the screen itself is flawed, not a glitch).
I don't like to post pictures unless I am somewhat satisfied with my work. But, I don't have much time to take pictures, or to go out somewhere and take them; my house is too boring for most dolly photo shoots.

I don't mind posting photos of one or two, but I am not comfortable in posting the whole gang. I also use a Post Office box for shipping or my office street address instead of my home address. AnnMarie

I do sometimes, well lately, I have not felt the urge to post a new gallery thread. *sigh* I don't know whether it is the new faceup I gave my doll or something else, that is keeping me from posting his pictures online. The funny thing is that I go ahead and edit them, resize them to the right size, then nothing. I just leave them on my hard drive. heh.
Maybe most of my photos will be for personal use, y'know to see how I have grown for the past few months.

I must 'showing' the dolls,t hough...as i'm making them clothes...but I'm 'focusing' on the cloth...so, perhaps, it's depicted in the pics...people seems don't bother with the doll and focusing on the cloth...unless, my doll is uninterested...hahaha...thankgoodness, then!

I am lazy too. I take lots of pics, but to post the you need a place to park your pictures, and it just becomes too much of a process for me. Maybe after I finish with the graduate program I am in. *_*
I don't post too many pics of my doll cause I'm lazy. Heh. But also because I feel my pics aren't the greatest. I am reluctant to post mediocre quality pictures. Alas, I don't have any interesting props or anything to really make great photos. Nor am I the best with a camera. Of course, that's my fault. I need to get off my ass and practice my photography. And get a nice background for my pics.

I've NEVER posted any pictures of my lovely dolls - I've barely TAKEN any photos... simply because they're 'not ready'! There are still so many clothes/accessories to be made/bought, and faceups/modifications to be painted. Plus, I'm a LAME photographer, so... yeah. Tragic!!
