View Full Version : Asking and Answering Questions! :)

Admin

Anyone is welcome to ask questions in this sub-forum, and in the same vein, anyone is welcome to answer them! This isn't just for questions directed to the mods, and if you know the answer to any question that's been posted, even if it's about forum-related matters, please feel free to post an answer!

Any sort of question is welcome to be asked, so long as it is either related to ABJDs or to this forum in some way or another. So don't be shy - ask away!

If you really do specifically have a question related to the Mods that you want us to answer for you, please start the title of your post with "Mods:" and then frame your question. That way we'll know what's specifically aimed at us and can focus on those posts first. :)

Thanks and enjoy yourselves!

What fueled the creation of this new forum?

Rhian
09-10-2007, 08:42 PM
Bunnychan, it was an idea that had been thought of and discussed for some time. Den of Angels is a tremendous resource for research, photos, news and all those good things, but as a natural result of its size, it's lacking in a more intimate community feel. A few of us remember the old Yahoo mailing list, which was flawed in some ways (especially when it came to storing information!) but which did have a smaller, more closely linked membership. Resinality is an attempt to return to that atmosphere, and to be a complement and addition to the forums that are already out there. :)

I have another question already hehe XD;

How do I set it to NOT recieve email notification of posts in threads im subscribed to.

I only want email notification of PMs. The rest I want to just be able to come to the site and check up on.

Follow this link (http://www.abjds.com/forum/profile.php?do=editoptions) to the "Edit Options" area of your User CP. Under "Messaging and Notification" are all the settings for thread and PM email notifications. :)

Go to User CP, click on Edit Options.
In the Messaging & Notification section, there's a box (second one) marked "default thread subscription mode."

Click on the drop down menu and change it to "do not subscribe."

:D

I just went through this and for some reason the above-mentioned setting didn't work for me. Just in case you encounter the same problem here's what I had to do...

In User CP choose 'List Subscriptions'. It should then display a page of all the threads you're subscribed to.

Check the box at the very top of boxes on the righthand side to select all subscriptions.

Near the bottom of the page there is a dropdown box with various options. Choose the notification option that you prefer and then click on the 'Go' button so your changes take effect.

Of course, if you want to change some subscriptions but not others you can just click on their respective boxes rather than selecting them all.

Hope this helps!

As an addendum/explanation to Merry's post: the settings in User CP set your default settings for thread subscription, but they only change how it affects future subscriptions. :) So any current thread subscriptions you have will remain the same -- if you're set to receive emails on those, you'll still receive them. Hence, please use Merry's explanation to change your current settings. :)

I am not sure where forum suggestions would go.

Is there any way that there could be a tag or key word something to let mods know..that photos are no longer visible in picture threads?

Or info is no longer available? I see this clutter at other clubs with older threads.

Maybe something like "remove after 3 months" ?

The same goes with threads that have "dated information or material."

This would save on clutter.

I can see that a lot of thought and work has gone into this club and I appreciate it.

I am getting use to this new forum format little by little. Love the speed and ease of posting. Seeing if my own tags work on photos.

I have a silly question...
I had been staring at the logo at the top of the banner but I just can't figure out whether it is the profile of a doll's face?

Please pardon me, but sometimes my eyes are just blind. ^^;;

If a member finds a thread like this that had broken photos or outdated information, then please use the 'Report thread" button on the post to let us know so we can remove it if need be. No need to create a new tag for these I feel. ^_^

I'm not sure if someone else asked this already, but I've been looking and have not found an answer.

Is there a place to post WTBs? I was just thinking it might be nice to have a separate section for it, so it would be easier for people to access...

Or was a decision made not to allow WTB posts?

Just wondering. Thanks!

You can use the Classifies to post a WTB! ^^ Just click the link in the appropriate category for "New Ad" - in the form, there's a drop-down menu that you can choose WTB from. You don't need to enter a price or shipping prices to post it. ^^

We had a problem with this in the past that was since fixed, but it looks like it's become unfixed. :oops I'll look into getting it fixed again ASAP (it involves some backend stuff unrelated to the forum itself) but in the meantime, the problem only has to do with Quick Reply and Quick Edit. If you use the normal Reply function (and/or choose 'Go Advanced') and then chose to Post/Save from there, it will work fine. The problem is only with the 'quick' functions. :oops Sorry about that, I'll see that it gets fixed as soon as I can!

Not a silly question at all!

If a window didn't come up asking for your cc information, it might be that you have pop-ups blocked on your computer (or some security measure preventing plug-ins being installed.)

I've also found it's easier to use Paygate and other cc utilities with Internet Explorer than other internet browsers (like Firefox.)

Try disabling any pop-up blockers and see if you can place your order again. Dollmore will automatically cancel any duplicate (unpaid) order. They're very nice.

Good luck!

I apologize in advance for the sheer n00bness of what I am about to say. I am interested in the market for BJD's, specifically the average sales prices after 30-40 years of ownership for a dollfie who has been handled but is in great shape. If I don't have kids to pass my BJD legacy onto, I want to know that Ican make an investment after years of play and fun. Is this possible, or msut the doll be untouched?

Thanks in advance to anyone who cna help me out. \^w^/

Ummm you do realize that the oldest ABJDs that are discussed on this forum are under 10 years old and the majority of doll owners here have had their dolls no longer than 3-4 years. ^^;

No one knows what will happen to the resin over time and personally I don't think there is any collectible that I would ever consider an investment. The market is way to volatile and one never knows what will be valuable (if anything) in the future.

I have to agree with Rkold - I wouldn't get into this hobby as in investment.
The resin is likely to deteriorate to a certain extent even if the doll is untouched, and there's no telling which dolls, if any, will hold their value, much less increase. With new, improved joints and posing coming out all the time, chances are older dolls will only become harder to sell.

The only reason to start into this hobby is to have fun now. :) If you have the surplus money to splurge a little on yourself, and you think you'd get happiness from playing with an abjd, then by all means, jump in!

That's unfortunately one of the small problems with having the dual systems, but we're still looking into the best ways to address this. We've thus far asked shops to have an ad in the classifieds that links to their shop thread, so that not only do they get extra exposure but so that also people have a legit ad number with which to leave them feedback.

Check the classifieds to see if the person you bought from does indeed have an ad so that you can utilize that ad number for feedback, and if they don't, ask them if they'd mind creating one so that you can leave them feedback. :)

I wanted to suggest a new prefix for thread titles... maybe something like "Fun!" or just along the lines of something like that... for discussion threads that aren't QUITE a discussion, in the user groups. (like threads that ask for people to share interesting/fun pictures of some sort)

I do apologise. It was my responsibility and I'm afraid I dropped the ball on this one. :oops We had had some other things we were considering in regards to the User Groups, so we had planned to implement them all at once (along with making the Families User Group) but things got in the way and everything got delayed.
However making User Groups is largely my responsibility and having said I would do it, the other admins left it up to me, so it is my fault that getting it done unfortunately got forgotten in the greater scheme of things.

In addition, I'm moving overseas for work in less than two weeks and, as I'm sure you can imagine, I have a lot of things to get done before I go. :oops I've been trying my best to keep up with forum related duties as much as possible, but it's been a bit hit and miss, and some things have been slipping my mind. That includes your PM from last week and again, getting the User Group created. (Merry did mention your PM from yesterday to me, and I told her I would deal with it.)

I just got in from having run errands all day and I'm quite exhausted, but as soon as I've had something to eat and gotten some energy back, I'll make sure that creating the User Group is my first priority. :)

ETA: Okay, it's made!

Hey, when I view my profile, it no longer has the information for things like Doll Family, "how did you find BJDs?", etc.. All the info is still on the edit profile fields, but it just doesn't show up anywhere once I hit "save."

I hit a few random profiles, including ones that I know had a lot of info listed, and theirs are gone too. The basics, like occupation, location, and birthday are still there, but not the more in depth info.

Are you using IE? I think most of us admins use FireFox almost exclusively so sometimes when there's an IE problem it takes us awhile to notice it. :oops

Lately, when I try to browse the forum, random pages I click on sends me to a white page that says

"Forbidden

This is especially common when I try to look at the databases. Is this just me, or has this been a problem for others?

Eek! I'm at work atm but I'll look into this properly when I get home and see what I can figure out!

Could you give me some direct links to pages causing this problem, or is it totally random? Also, if you try refreshing the page, or going back and clicking on the links again, does it keep happening for the same page, or does it sometimes work and sometimes not? (I hope that makes sense.)

And if anyone else has been having this problem, please do post!

Hi everyone,

I have trying to buy a wig that looks like the one in the link but I cannot find anything like it anywhere. Most long wigs are either straight or have bangs or a fringe.

Can anyone help?

Have you looked at Monique wigs? I think that the Ginger or Pretty Girl types would work best, though you would have to trim the wig a bit to fully emulate the one in the link.

Thanks saraquill, I couldn't find anything quite like it at Monique's either but you're right, it's probably one of the long hair wigs that has been trimmed and modified. I have something similar here, I'll give it a go.

I wanted to know why I can't get an avatar? It only gives the option to not have one. Is this just because I am a new member? Am I not able to change my 'junior member' status to something personal or add a signature till later on? Thanks.

My DZ Megi 2 is single jointed in both arms and legs and has a two piece torso.

Dear Mods,

Any chance we could get a Meet up sub forum in the Gallery?

Thank you!

I hope this is the right place for this....
Are members allowed to sell or advertise here on Resinality?
Am looking for a Unoa doll and just wondered.

Sorry... went and found the answer ... I must be getting blind
in my old age or my computer skipped when I read the rules.

THANKS!!!

Hi there!
I have a question about the type of ABJD's that are ON and OFF TOPIC on this forum:

Do they always have to be made of resin (french/urethane/etc)?

Can they be made of other plastics, like PVC?

I ask, because Customhouse now has some really nice-looking PVC BJD's. I may be tempted to purchase one in the future, and I'd like to know if I can post stuff about it on Resinality.

Thank you!
Much appreciated. :)

Hiya miffimifster and thanks for your question!

In general, as per the rules (http://www.abjds.com/forum/rules.php), BJDs posted on this forum should be made of resin and we prefer to stick to those for the most part. :)

However, we can consider other dolls (for example, DD are usually considered an exception to this rule, the same as on DoA) so if you do purchase a doll that doesn't fit the rules exactly, please feel free to contact the Admins and we'll consider it!

And even if we deem that it doesn't fit the rules, we still have an "OT Dolls & Toys" usergroup and you'd be more than welcome to post it in there as well. :) For more info about the User Groups please see the "User Groups Info (http://www.abjds.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=12)" subforum and PM an admin if you have any further questions. :)

Thank you very much for the quick reply, Karhys. This helps a lot. :):):)

It certainly is nice to see that this forum has this kind of flexibility.

If I purchase one of these dolls from Customhouse, I will definitely send a message to the admins about it.

Again, THANK YOU!

Hi! I am new to the whole BJD forum world and was wondering if anybody would be kind enough to provide me with the names/links to other popular doll forums for ABJDs. I'm starting up a small BJD making business and would like to familiarize myself with how everything works, and what potential customers want.

I am sure I could find the forums on my own, but I'm so tired form work x.x And I don't know which would be considered the most popular/have more helpful users.

PS: I think this site is awesome. Everybody has been very nice and helpful so far :)

Well, if you haven't already found it, Den of Angels is a really popular one. The only problem is that registration is invitation only right now, and although you can email them requesting an invite if you don't know anyone in the community, it takes FOREVER for them to reply, if at all.

Sorry, I don't know if that really helps you any...

yes! i fianlly get to post. ^^ so i've been researching around and things, and i came up with a few questions.. maybe a bit dumb xD but i'll just ask them..
Is it normal/weird? to take photos/ videos of a..box opening (?) i saw some people on youtube with them, and i was just wondering.
Is there a site/thread for a list of recommended first doll?
And this isn't really related, but is there a site where they sell musical instruments for dolls? x3
im bound to come up with more questions, but please bear with me, thank you so much! x3

Akito-your questions aren't dumb at all! We all had questions when starting the hobby ^^

As for box openings, yes, it is very normal to take photos and vids of the opening. It was (for me at least) kind of the culmination of the wait for my girl to arrive and a great way to show off your new doll before mods/wigs etc.

Your first doll, and any doll you buy really, should be the doll you are in love with most or fits a character you have in mind. Each brand, size, and sculpt has different qualities that you may or may not like so there really isn't a "beginner doll". (Although i'm partial to ResinSoul/Bobobie myself ^.~) Even if you don't have access to DoA as a member there is a wiki available with a list of doll companies that you can look through and check out. I'm sure you'll find a bjd that suits you perfectly. : )

For instruments, I actually can't help you there. I know a lot of people find them in thrift shops and antique stores, but maybe someone else here will be able to point you in the right direction. ^.^

Sorry for the rambling, I hope that all made sense! :oops

Thanks so much ^^; i was just wondering what other people thought, since I was wondering I guess x3
Oh, I see, so it's all about how much money youre willing to spend xD and if you find like, the perfect one for you, how I touches your heart.. So far I've been looking and haven't found one, but I'm hopin I will soon ^^;;
Really, antique stores! Oh man, I guess I'll have to start searching here now xD

Oh, one general question I forgot to ask, when I first started to look at abjds, I thought they were all about 28 cm, and I was looking at the older looking ones, turns out that I was looking at dolls that were 60 cm... That's a bit too big for my liking, and almost all the sites I've been looking at are all those sizes, are there any doll stores that have small dolls, but older...looks? Shapes? Idk..T.T;

My first and only doll is a Volks Dolfie Plus. She's 27cm and about the size of Barbie. I know there are other companies that do tiny and small dolls, but Volks is pretty easy to get/find. I picked mine up used/unfinished off of eBay, but I've heard lots of bad things about that. You may wish to use the Volks website directly. The one thing I do like about Volks is you do the work yourself and get the look you want. I hope this helps you.

Hi
Sorry if my question seems stupid.
I have just posted pics of my DD, and a question is in my head .
Name of the forum is resinality. For me, dollfie dream are BJD but definitively not resin. Is it allowed please to talk about them?
Thank you very much in advance!

Yup, go right ahead with posting your DD! We're really not too stringent about deeming dolls off topic, so though they aren't typical BJDs we're still totally cool with them! ^^
