View Full Version : Household Pets VS BJDS??

Hi, is this the right place to put this?? I just discovered the swanky world of BJDS... and I'm looking into getting my own. I just have a few questions for owners so I can work a few things out.
I wanted to know if any owners had problems with their pets getting to their dolls. See, I have a ferret, and as ferret owners know, even if you don't want them to get into something they'll somehow manage it (witty buggers)... Is there any history of pets/animals getting to the dolls?
OR, even other family members. I have a really obnoxious little brother with equally rude and annoying friends that don't see any problem with coming around and messing with my things. Although this won't be a problem for long (I'm planning on getting my own place in a month) I wanted to hear stories of anyone with any of these problems.
Thanks for responding!

I'm fortunate in that I only have a bird and he's not out of the cage unless I'm there supervising so.. no problems. Plus, he's a little afraid of the dolls (and everything else in the world, he's quite the wuss!).
My mom's dog just sniffs at them. Her biggest problem is she likes laces or strings or anything that hangs like that (to chew on them, you'd think she was a cat or something). I've found her chewing on shoe laces, stringy-bits that are attached to pants or shirts and have had to rescue those (including my own clothes). Lol..

I have cats, mice, and doves--and none of them have ever caused any problems ever.
And neither did my little brother.
My FRIEND, however, who is completely self-absorbed and has no respect for anyone's things, broke the finger off of my DoT Sha O_______O

I have 2 cats and they pretty much leave my dolls alone for the most part. One cat loves on my dolls and expects them to pet her (she's always so disappointed.) My other cat leaves them alone since she rubbed up against the legs of a doll that was standing up when she was a kitten and he sat down really hard on her. O_O
I have heard some horror stories about dolls being chewed up by dogs however. You'll probably need a good place to keep your doll where the ferrets and brother can't find.

My cats like wigs, so I have a shelf now above my bed that's too high for them to jump on. Keeping stuff higher up with no way of accessing it should help with the ferret at the very least.

I have the same advice: clear out a shelf for the dolls way up high! One of my cats likes to chew on doll hands and toes and another one mauled a mohair wig once, right after I bought it :(

*nods* cats love wigs. At least mine do, but aside from the occasional lick out of curiosity my dogs have never shown any interest whatsoever.

Yeah, my dogs used to eat my barbies when I was a kid, and my menace brother liked to give them really horrible haircuts without my knowing. I'm not going to let anything like that happen to my Doc Yen (when I get him, still saving :D).. I don't think I'll even let him out of my sight! I can't even stop looking at pictures of him online.
So I guess pets aren't much of a problem... should I be more worried about other people touching my doll?
My dogs barely acknowledge my dolls, and my ratties don't either - although one of them has tasted one of my dollie maryjanes, and at some time, probably a tiny taste off her arm (small, filled with apoxie now). Better keep them away from gnawing beasties. xD
If you're worried about your family not respecting your stuff, wait until you have your own place to get your dolls. They're too expensive to be left at the mercy of disrespectful people.

I have two cats and a canary currently, and in past I had a pet rat as well... None of them have ever bothered the dolls.
Although... like others have said up-thread... my cats *did* make off with an unattended mohair wig once upon a time. They thought they'd found The Greatest Cat-Toy Ever. So, be wary of leaving furry wigs where little, four-footed hunters can have a go at them. o_O
My dog doesn't bother my dolls at all. Right now its just me, the dog and the mice and none of them care. The only thing I have to be careful with is my dolls' stuffed pets. Bridie doesn't recognize the difference between stuffed animals and dog toys.

My cat nor my dog have ever bothered my boys.. my cat likes to sniff them a little, but otherwise, she leaves them be. Although she likes to use Bedwyn for a bed, for whatever reason. But ONLY Bedwyn. XD
Anyway.. as for your little brother, have a serious talk with him about how he'll have to pay for your dolls if he puts a fingerprint on them. ;) Lock your door, if possible.
If you do have nibbly pets - just put your dolls on your desk, or somewhere high where they can't be reached by the furry friends. :3

My cat has one or two favorites that he honestly hasn't figured out won't pet him in return. The dog has zero interest in any of them, and the rabbit doesn't get out in the room where the dolls are.
Having said that:
I have rescued a doll who was the target of a dog attack... her head was moderately chewed by a small teacup sized dog. Granted, the dog was a known chewer, and the doll's previous owner should have known better.
Mohair wigs on the other hand... hoo boy. I've rescued Suzu's wig more times than I care to count... and my cat absolutely destroyed my lavender TinyBear wig before I got home one day. I now keep my mohair wigs locked in a drawer where my cat can't get to them.

I have to say one thing.. If you have rodents/pocket pets that you let out for exercise (rats, hamsters, gerbils, degus, GPs, rabbits), even supervised (which they should be always), these guys are natural chewers. Not out of spite or even curiousity, they need to chew to keep their teeth under control and will chew on anything hard they can get their teeth near. Not saying it's a disaster or anything, but I know if my gerbils had a chance around my dolls, they'd have chewed them to bits. So, if you have anything like that, just be careful when they are out and about. And a we know, it's bad for the dollies but even worse for the animals as resin isn't edible.

Oh, I know that. I just got so used to having my dolls on the bed that it sort of didn't register. These days I'm better than that. Of course, I always supervise them.
My dogs have never had a problem. They might sniff, but they are so used to having dolls around that they know that they are never to touch them. One of mine does get jealous at times (like when I'm dressing one of my dolls), but I just put "clothes" on her to make her happy.

It's really not a question of what the cats do to the dolls. As far as they're concerned, they'd have nothing to do with those weird things that smell funny.
It's what we inflict on the cats that gets us those little moments of amusement:) lol!

I had one cat that loved to snuggle my dolls. She figured out that fingers make a great chin scratcher, but never hurt them. XD Another cat likes to pull synthetic mohair wigs off head, but doesn't take them anywheres. Apparently they just aren't allowed to be on heads. o.o
One of our dogs saw one of my heads laying on the floor and must have assumed it was a ball or chewbone, because he scooped it up and started walking away. Luckily, he is a golden retriever, so he didn't chew it, just carried it around. x.x The head was unharmed, lucky, as was the faceup.
So, all in all, I think my pets are pretty well behaved... or else they just don't care.

i knew a couple with ferrets and they brought them into a class i took. they definitely were very mischevious (picking up things or trying to stealing random items) and wanted to explore every nook and cranky. i would take simple precautions like closing doors, etc.
my cat likes the wigs- but only when they are off the doll. i think the wigs are too similar to rodent-like cat toys and the like. perhaps they see the hair and think fur? who knows. my cat actually seems either un-phased by my doll, or scared of him, so he tends to leave him alone.

My dolls sit out in the same room as my cat and have thus far remained unmolested. But, for what it's worth, they're virtually barricaded on a shelf in the "stay the f*** off of everything in this corner or YOU DIE" part of the room, so I doubt the cat could satisfy any curiosities he might have. I guess the point I'd make is not to give the pets the opportunity to indulge their more destructive tendencies.
As far as siblings go, I don't know what the family dynamics are like, but I'd just get everyone together-- siblings, parents/guardians, etc.-- and be pretty explicit about things. I don't know if the cost is a factor you're comfortable discussing with your parents, but that would certainly be worth mentioning. Do what you can to make it clear that the dolls are off-limits. My sister has had dolls for several years now with a toddler in the same living space, and there have never been issues. She just made the boundaries quite clear with the young'un, and there haven't been problems.
My FRIEND, however, who is completely self-absorbed and has no respect for anyone's things, broke the finger off of my DoT Sha O_______O
:o You did return the favor, didn't you?
In my house hold, not so much "versus" as "complete and utter boredom." Admitted, my dolls stay in their bags most of the time (paranoid about yellowing much?), but even if they're out or in an active photoshoot, the cats ignore them completely.
My family members, when they come around, ad pretty grabby and disrespectful, so i just keep eveyrthing important well out of their way - dolls, personal possessions, or wahtever it may be.
I have four cats, and aside from one who likes to flop on them (he thinks they're people XD), they really don't bother the dolls at all. Granted, when I'm not around I put them up in a glass cabinet so none of them have a chance to really get to them anyway, but so far so good.
My cat isn't interested in thedolls themselves so much as the wigs DX
He managed to run off with SIX's wig at one point and hid it somewhere in the house. I e-mailed JPOPDolls to see if they had any others but it was sold out and they weren't getting any more DX So for months I bought random wigs trying to find a new default one for him >[ Then one day the wig was just lying there on the living room carpet D8
Though now we have a puppy so whenever I have a little photoshoot I have to keep an eye on her >_<

I've had no problem from my dog in regards to my dolls. She occasionally goes to have a sniff of the "Are you for eating?" variety, but otherwise she really doesn't care. She will move very carefully on the sofa if there's a doll on the other end, in fact. :XD
As far as family members, I have no help there. :sweat I trained my kid from the time he was tiny that he must be very careful around the dolls, but that's another whole world from "bratty brother keep out!" And my brother was an awesome kid, so I don't know what other people do to manage siblings. o_o

My first doll (luckily, a not-too-expensive Orient Doll vampire Ui) was chewed into kibble-sized bits by my fresh from the Humane Society dog. I didn't even know that she could reach that shelf until I identified the crumbs on my floor as resin :o
I now have a replacement Ui, but the dog went mysteriously missing when I left her in my parents' care for a weekend. Which just reinforced the lesson that some things in life are replaceable, and some aren't.
I had ferrets years ago, and I suspect that they could wreak the most havoc by stealing doll accessories and hoarding them in strange places. They may also chew doll clothes and wigs, as mine liked anything soft and fuzzy (they were constantly finding and dragging my MLPs around by their manes and tails). However, I can't say for sure how they would be with dolls, as I only started collecting about a year after the furkids had all passed on from a series of increasingly exotic illnesses.
My cats sometimes sleep on top of my dolls, if I leave them laying out, but aside from some hair, they never leave any damage.
I'm looking forward to doing some photoshoots with my dolls and my ball python, though. As soon as she settles in a bit more. No hair. No chewing habit. It should be a perfect match, as long as I keep the set warm.

I've got three cats and they're absolutely uninterested in the dolls. If anything, they seem to be a little bit scared of Sevvie. He's mostly sitting in the sofa and if I place him in the corner where the cats usually sleep, they'll abandon that sofa completely. They're not even interested in the wigs (oddly enough, one of my kid's dolls is wearing a fur wig but even that holds no interest to the cats)
So here, they coexists nicely :)

I have 5 wonderful cats ^_^ as for getting to my dolls...all the time...but not in the way most would think...my cats love grooming my dolls for some reason ^^; they're very cute about it so I let them get away with it sometimes...but no all the time...all my limited dolls stay on shelves away from my kids...but any of my older dolls that i put in the living room area or near my computer desk area...the Cats are rubbing all over them and grooming them ^^; (mainly poor Taikoubo, my Captain Chris and Pocky and Micheal...I don't seem to have problems with the others...maybe they just like those 4 ^^; ) as for Ferrets...not too sure...other than the fact that I really want a Ferret ^_^

Oh, we have a ferret, too :D Well, he's my Mother's actually.
When the boys lived out in my room, Pepper wasn't allowed in, only after I carefully moved them onto my desk. After a while my dolls took up residence in my wardrobe so now the little bugger can explore more freely around here, though I have to look out when the doors of the wardrobe are open (I like to see my boys^^) because he has learned to skillfully raid my desk/wardrobe and everything in that height :sweat
Though when he was allowed to meet Ezra, nothing more took place than a bit of careful (and thorough) sniffling....and they were separated before he could go for Ez's face/try to nibble/scratch :)
In a few years, when he is older and calmer I may try to pose them together for some pics, but until then ferrets and dolls are kept separately :)
I keep my dolls in a locked trunk because I have a big puppy who is teething. He's very sweet, but I don't want him to chew up any dolls.

My cat (when I was still living with her -wah!) likes the dolls. Most cats, it seems have the desire to check them out. I think they're making sure they're not edible. Which mostly leads to some hilarious photos of cats sniffing dolls, curled up next to dolls, and stealing wigs.
Neither of the cats I had whilst owning BJDS have ever done anything destructive to the dolls. Mind you, when I'm not playing with them the dolls lived in their boxes on a shelf in a closet that was mostly inaccessible to the furball.
I did stop a couple attempts at wig theft, however. Midori (current cat) ran off with a cheap blue acrylic clown wig for 2 days. Carried it off like it was a mouse she'd caught or something. Later found it on the floor somewhere in the house. The wig cost me like 2 bucks, so I was more amused than angry. I did stop an attempt on Llyn's fur wig once, which would have been more catastrophic since he doesn't have any other hair!
Fur and mohair wigs seem to be a big temptation, and Llyn's smaller size seems to be less of a deterent to a cat attack. Compared to all my other dolls she took quite an interest in him. I took these pics of doll molestation, about a year ago, when I was living in VT with Midori. They've been posted around.

I currently have a dog, a lizard and a bunnie. The bunnie, she's shy, so she pretty much stays in her cage. The dog, she's completely uninterested in dolls (they are not balls or food). The lizard is a rescue and we've had him almost 2 years. He was in a house fire and was extremely upset when we first adopted him.
I've had ferrets, gerbils, hamsters, geckos & chinese water dragons, snakes, fish, bigger dogs and a cat. I think, fortunately for me, that I found my resin habit after my ferret friends had pass along. I don't think they make anywhere in the world that a ferret can't figure out how to get to.
I do have 3 kids, as well (11-14) and the youngest (boy) is always very careful around Mom's babies. The older two (both girls) have fallen in with the doll hobby and now have dolls of their own. I also take my dolls all over the place. Besides meet-ups, I have taken them to work many times, also shopping in various places and on vacation. Even my very boisterous neice quieted down while getting to hold one of my babies.
When I was growing up, though, my sister (10 yrs. younger) was the "baby". My parents were not very good with boundary setting (and this was before people called it that specifically). I finally had to set my own boundaries with a hook&eye placed above her reach.
If getting parents to reinforce boundaries is an issue, and since you are planning to move out, it may be simplest to wait to purchase your doll until you have settled into your new home. It's hard to wait, but much easier than having your heart broken if someone gets broken.

I'm currently petless and want to stay that way. I have to admit I miss by two cats that we lost to old age. They would have been very thrilled to play with the dolls, especially if the hair moved when they were looking. They were attracted to movement. Wonder if they would have considered them a substitute for people when we were gone.

one of my cats, Cello, loves my dolls. she treats them like miniature human beings: by rubbing up against/nibbling on the tops of their heads, and sleeping in their laps (thereby enveloping the entire doll). if i discourage her in that, she'll sleep as close to them as possible.
my other four cats run will run roughshod over them if i don't shoo them away.
EDIT: i found a pic of Cello encroaching on Kei and Akemi's personal space. they're both minis; you can tell by looking at them just how huge Cello is *_*

And as far as family goes, my brother was curious about them but, mostly the rest of my family doesn't even bother me about my dolls anymore. No one in my house, pets or family, really goes after my dolls at all thankfully.

My cat has total disregard for my dolls. If they happen to be where he would like to claim as a place to sleep he carefully plops himself across whomever happens to be unlucky enough to be under him. :XD
It isn't like he specifically goes after them. . . or maybe he does. . .Sometimes, I think he's evil enough to do just that. . .

ha i have live with 3 cats and i have a ferret.... my cat spends most of his time in my room and i have 3 of my boys on my bed so the most my cat does is try to get the dolls to pet him.... but other then that he's scared of them... my ferret on the other hand thinks my boys are mini people so he does his little dooking around (for those non-ferret peoples that's they're little happy weasel war dance where they bounce around) anywho yeah he'll bounce around in front of them and make his little laughing sound trying to get them to play but he's never once bothered with them much... since like anychild with major adhd... he's easily distracted so it's more like to him it's a routine ... dook around them nip a shoe smell a hand then run off to play with his crinkle ball...

Most of all, my cats seem to be slightly scared of the dolls. My dolls sit in the sofa when I'm not photographing them and the cats always lie in the opposite corner, as far from the dolls as they can get - this is a notable exception, really:

Our family dog is actually kind of scared of the dolls. At the time I just had Kellen but whenever I posed him with her/near her she would get up and leave. She sniffed him a couple of times like "What is this thing?" but otherwise left him be completely.
I had a pet rat until earlier this year and I never had any problems with him, but I always kept him seperate from the dolls.

I have two Siamese cats and there is no shelf high enough to thwart these able climbers...think cats on the top of the china cabinet. I keep my dolls in the bedroom and the cats elsewhere in the house. They did manage to steal a mohair wig once when they broke into the bedroom. Mohair seems to be a favorite with cats. I think it's because it used to be part of something living and it smells right to them. These two are mischief incarnate and I wouldn't trust them alone with my resin kids. My doll wigs are all locked in plastic containers now... I wouldn't let my pets chew on resin dolls. Resin can be poisen if ingested. When people sand resin dolls to remove the seams, they recommend wearing a face mask so as not to inhale the dust. I would hate for anyone to lose a pet from it swallowing a chunk of resin.

Keeping cats, dogs, etc... out of the room you keep your doll in is very good idea. Unless you can train them to leave them well alone.

I have two dogs and a cat. One of the dogs and a cat are still young, curious and very active. Still, the only precaution I need is always keep dolls in closed spaces when they are out of my sight. It's not always convenient, especially when I want to read in bed with dolls at my side... and my dog and cat want to play tag around me... but we manage to live very well all together, and i hope it will be quieter when they grow up.

Fur and mohair wigs seem to be a big temptation, and Llyn's smaller size seems to be less of a deterent to a cat attack. Compared to all my other dolls she took quite an interest in him. I took these pics of doll molestation, about a year ago, when I was living in VT with Midori. They've been posted around.

hairless baby cat likes his/hers booty itched!! don't forget the scratch under the chin :)
It's really not a question of what the cats do to the dolls. As far as they're concerned, they'd have nothing to do with those weird things that smell funny.
It's what we inflict on the cats that gets us those little moments of amusement:) lol!

Wow what a Handsome Siamese, so royal with that long face, I'm surprise he/she didn't steal the wig:)
Most of all, my cats seem to be slightly scared of the dolls. My dolls sit in the sofa when I'm not photographing them and the cats always lie in the opposite corner, as far from the dolls as they can get - this is a notable exception, really:

I think its hilarious how huge cats and other animals look next to dolls. their realistic little faces and clothes make them look human but the animals are just impossibly huge lol

This question is funny to me because I just got my first complete doll and one of my 2-year old kittens likes to bite him!! :wahwah
I'm only weary of him trying to bite the fingers. eek! Other than that I'm not bothered.
But I definately won't be able to keep them standing around anywhere where they can be knocked over. My kittens are still pushing their limits, perhaps I'm a bad parent and didn't teach them good enough as little babies, so I do blame myself for my out of control kids.
But anyway, I love my cats, they are my family members, if there were a fire in my home I'd want my cats out before any material possession.
I don't mind keeping my doll-babies safe in their boxes.

My cat will politely rub against gently or sniff my doll if i put the doll near my cat and say shes allowed but then she goes to the other side of the bed and curls in a ball and sleeps. She knows there important to me and she treats them just as carefully as I do. Although poor cat and my recent outfit having real jingle bells XD

I have a dog, but I don't have many problems with her anymore. When she was a puppy, she loved to steal things and chew on it. She has never chewed on my dolls themselves, but once I caught her chewing on Yelena's legwarmer.
Now I keep my dolls at my room on a desk, where she can't reach them.
When I pick up one of my dolls, she wants to sniff a few times and then it is okay for her.
I have also taught her that when I am busy with a photoshoot, that she is not allowed to come close. And that works fine so far. :)

My cat gets jealous at times about my two BJDs. Especially if I dress them in black, she hates black things :D Sometimes she just comes and tries to sit on them, perhaps trying to show who's the boss here.

I keep my chinchillas away from anything that I like... they love to chew everything and anything.
my rat could care less towards anything and would only want to go back to her cage..
the dogs aren't allowed in my room...
so I have no problem with pets and dolls ^^;

My cat really loves the dolls (and other than one mohair wig, he even treats them well) -- I think it's because he realizes that they are the center of attention and that he needs to be in on that. Whenever I take photos, he tries to get into them. This was one of the more blatant examples.

My 11-year old sister has been truly excellent about my dolls up to this point, and she has a reputation for being rather bratty.
My dogs, however, have already gotten at a Puki's fur wig, so I lock them out of my room at all times unless I have my rooms on my desk and they are on my bed or something. You can never be too careful with these things!

My cat Tabs likes to get in on the act whenever I'm doing something with the dolls; he's particularly fond of my El, Kai:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3531/3227231362_9374738bde.jpg
And my old rats Jake and Elwood just adored my Shiwoo Eric:
http://www.arkady.org.uk/eric/eric-rat05.jpg
The rats were always immaculately behaved and never once tried to chew on any of my dolls.
These days, the only thing I have to watch out for is my toddler trying to get at the dolls; she's very gentle with them and particularly adores my little BC Kumi, Tim-Tam (who she will actually ask for by name), but I'm careful to keep them up out of her reach on shelves; not because I'm afraid she'll damage them, but because most of them are too heavy for her to handle without supervision.

I have 2 dogs, 6 cats, 3 parrots, 1 child, and a hubby. Everyone is mixed. The only issue I have is the youngest feline who periodiaclly steals a wig or stuffie. Other than that, I have had more issues finding dolls on the secondary market with imperfections that require repair. AnnMarie

I have 2 cats and a dog and I'm happy to say I've never had any real problems with them and my BJDs. So far the only thing is my cats and dog all want me to pay attention to them when I'm taking pictures! My dog always run up to them, smells then then gets bored of them and turns to me with the 'I'm cute lay with me instead" face. x] My older cat, Misty, could honestly care less, but my younger cat, Pumkin, always tries to rub against them and sniffs at my camera lens, and will sit one them... xD... No real harm done, and really it more cute and funny than annoying.

Of all my dolls, my dog doesn't like my MSD girl. I keep her up on a shelf, and whenever I change her clothes, pose, etc. he will bark and growl at her. When I get her down from the shelf he just sniffs her, though, but I don't leave them unsupervised. And he will destroy a wool wig if I let him get a hold of one. I think he smells the animal the wool came from. I learned that the hard way. Now I have one with a bald spot!

My cats like to eat furry things and my pet rats chew on everything, so I understand your fears x.x I would suggest keeping the dolls in a different room than the ferrets, preferably in a display case-type closet, or at least up on a shelf that has no access to the floor.

My cat is pretty much not interested in them, the only doll she likes is-ironically-my werewolf boy xD She'll cuddle him, lay her head on him and just generally likes him, but my other dolls, wigs or clothes are left alone by her. I'm getting a rabbit soon, I'm curious what she will think of the dolls! I wouldn't leave them alone with either of my pets though, even if they're not interested, you never know.
Thankfully my most curious kitty doesn't come into my bedroom. (We have 2 cats that don't get along, one has claimed my bedroom as his so the other refuses to come in.) Though he does like boxes...>_> so I'd have to be careful moving the doll into another room, even if it was packaged in it's box...since he likes to chew plastic and bubble wrap too. And i don't have to worry about my rat since she stays mostly in her cage unless supervised.
I have a small battalion of ferrets who are extremely curious. I let them sniff and nuzzle my first doll but they lost interest pretty fast. Pretty safe for me (thank goodness) although I still don't let them near any of the doll's things. One of my ferrets loves to chew and tear apart clothing, especially shoes.

Have you checked under the couch? That's where anything remotely fur-like ends up with my cat. That and hair ties, shoulda called my cat Paul-Mitchell the way he goes after those things. :| In any case, my kitty is pretty good about leaving things alone, he just expects worship. I store anything important in a place that requires thumbs to get into. :nod

that... is HILARIOUS :XD
as far as pets vs bjds, i have personally never had much of an issue, but all i have is a rabbit so he isn't often around mine.
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k5/MaraGlitch/Mara/Box%20Opening/di12.jpg
but like many other people have mentioned, you just have to watch your pets around the dolls. the obvious getting knocked over and cracked or broken from it comes up, as well as being chewed on. the resin isn't just bad for pets, its poisonous and an immediate vet trip will be required should they ever ingest any resin part.
pets can be a fun prop with your bjd too if done properly.
though, if you have a cat... they apparently are inherently attracted to these dolls. i don't know why, but cats are magnetically drawn to bjds. if you want to take a picture of your doll, your cat will be there. don't believe me? look at box opening pics here or den of angels - 90% of them have cats in their pictures :XD cracks me up...

Ah, now I'm afraid my cat's going to maul my doll...he loves to knock things off my desk, so that would be another problem.
Plus he'll bite me if he doesn't have free access to my room, so I'm going to have to figure something out quick...
By the way, those cat pics are great, and jedimarajade, is that a little Totoro for your doll near his foot? That's too cute!

My dogs are really good at ignoring things in my house besides their food or toys. I have lots of knick-knacks around and sometimes I leave my sewing/materials on the floor but they never bother with any of it. They are really quite clever, my two Boston Terrors. The only thing they do is sort of ignore anything flat on the floor. They seem to always want to come "talk to me" when I'm cutting nice fabrics on the floor and they don't seem to get it when I tell them to "Back UP!" haha Since I don't have any dolls at home (yet) I will have to see how they react. I'm actually quite interested to see what they will do. They know the command "not yours" so they will be hearing that a lot when they get too close my new babies.

I have an 8 yo girl who has had little interest in dolls and two cats, one who will only lay on things but the boy cat loves to chew. I have many things (including my own toes and fingers) that have little punch marks from sharp teeth.
While uncommon, it can happen... keep the pretty and expensive dolls out of reach and you will be fine.

I wasn't having any trouble with my most active cat, a 3 year old boy himalayan, but then I painted my girl doll's nails with fabric paint and suddenly he's interested. I don't know if it's the small of the dried paint or the fact that they are now red. Even though animals see in black and white, I think red attracts them (shade of gray to them!). Now Jiji's nails look like she's been nibbling the paint off!

I make sure the doll sits on her hands when unattended. One of my friends saw her posed that way and asked if she was trying to break the habit. I'm going to try a french manicure so the paint won't be red.
Back when I had cats they never bothered any of mine, have heard of cats being utterly facinated by furwigs, wanting to play and poke at them, but none of mine ever did that.
There was a girl at the danish bjd forum who was so unfortunate that her dog came close to one of her boys and "played" with him a bit, aka biting/chewing in him! OAO

I've had himalayans before and they seem to be more a mouth on cat than a paws on cat, but they all seem to love playing grab and run. If a wig or an article of clothing is off the doll and he can grab it and run with it, Tama will do it just to spite me, but he doesn't do any damage. That's why it was so weird when he started nail nibbling. Fortunately all he has done is chip the 'polish'. I was afraid he'd start scratching their jeans the way he tries to use ours on our legs for scratching posts!
I noticed after a few months of them being on their couch on the top shelf, when I start the vacuum, he goes and does his best to hide under their couch and when that fails, he wriggles under their legs to be protected. LOL! My old lady cat is like "Just don't steal my catnip" and gives them dirty looks when they are in 'her space'.

I recommend that anyone with pets be very careful, and don't leave them lying around unattended. One time I left Rayen out when my cat was around, and Ophelia (the little stinker that she is) ended up taking her wig for a run around the house and biting a couple little dents into Rayen's fingers. X.x Just make sure to put your dolls in a safe place when you aren't playing with them, 'cause depending on the pet they make try and take a chunk out.

Hmm...my sister's Guinea pig is entirely uninterested in Feena. The first time I showed her Feena, she looked, took a sniff and then looked elsewhere, probably for the lettuce she was expecting instead xD.
As for friends, the few I have know better than to do anything to my things. I have been worried a few times about my brother though...hes a bit of a scumbag with a history of going into my room and taking my things when he was little. So the last time my mom and I yelled him out of the house I was kind of worried he might screw with something in my room while I was at work. But thankfully it seems that he isn't stupid enough to piss me off to the point that my parents would throw him out of the house completely. -- Which is a good thing, I wasn't looking forward to having to break arms if Feena was hurt >:D

I have a cat and a sugar glider and they don't go anywhere near my dolls. Well, my cat has sniffed my doll before, but that's as far as it went. I wouldn't advise anyone to leave their dolls standing about or sitting on the edge of a table with a cat on the prowl. They might not mean to, but they could topple your doll or push them off a high surface by accident. Like with children, supervision is necessary. XD

I keep my dolls in a glass cabinet to both protect them from my cats and from dust as they sit around untouched most of the week (precious little time to take care of them)...
Knowing cats, I would never let my dolls stand, or even sit around by themselves anywhere a cat can reach as they could get knocked over just because a kitty was exploring, or worse - the dolls were in a way of insect-hunt... I find a display case the perfect solution.
