View Full Version : Mods- what wont you buy?
I love mods, seeing them and making them. But there are some that will prevent me from buying a doll. I might do them on my own doll, but I figure I probably wont be able to sell it ever. Examples are large piercings in ears, piercings of lips, noses. I am also not a big fan of turning a girl body into a boy, by sanding off the breasts. The torso just doesnt look balanced to me when naked, and a lot of my dolls sit around without clothes. I love some of the characters that others have done in this way, but for such a radical mod, I'd rather do it myself.
Anyone else feel this way?

For me, if I'm buying a doll second hand I pretty much won't consider any mods to the face except for perhaps light ear mods which could possibly be restored to the original. This is mostly due to the fact though that I have a huge number of mods planned for all my dolls, so I need whoeever I adopt to be in new or like-new condition so that I have a somewhat "blank page" to start on. But even light body mods such as sanding away the seams I am also very picky on since if one plans to dye a doll ( such as I like to do ), sanded seams can be a huge problem.
Only one of my dolls I'm not planning on doing alot of mods on, so I think I'd be a bit more lenient on what types of previously created mods are there, but even so, they'd have to be small.
:)
It depends on the character I have in mind for the doll or what strikes my fancy. If I'm looking for a body for a specific character and that character doesn't have piercings, than I'll avoid piercings. However, if it's not for a specific character, then I would consider things like piercings (I personally like them). One of my girls has pierced ears (my friend pierced them for me)--I don't buy them with intent to resell, so I do what I want with them.
I like girl to boy mods, but it all depends on the character the body's for, and so far a modded girl body hasn't been a good fit for any of my guys. And of course, how well a mod is done makes a huge difference.

i don't like any mods. unless it is a specific character doll ie. a robot doll who has a tatoo that looks like robot insides would be cool, but i don't generally go for those type of dolls, so no mods for me at all.

Not a fan of much in the way of mods other than ear piercings for my girls and some eye opening mods on some of the sleeping dolls. I absolutely prefer less than more and it has to be in the right scale and proportion.

I'm not a modding fan at all and would never buy a secondhand doll that's been modded, no matter how cheap it was. If I don't like a doll as is from the manufacturer, I won't buy it.

I don't think I would buy a modded doll unless I was familiar with the customizer. There's too much risk involved.
I probably would not, unless it was already modded the way I was planning to do myself. I did buy one modded doll from someone, but only for the body which was not modded.

'Depends on how well the mod is done. I have a Nanuri '07 with a very nicely-done eye-mod, for instance. I wasn't reluctant at all to buy her. Likewise, I have a few who have come with pierced ears... I don't mind that either. A more extensive mod, like Nightengale's ears or some of the zombie gore mods that were so popular earlier in the year? No. I probably wouldn't go for one of those... If I want something like that, I'm more likely to start with a "blank slate" and have it done to my own specifications.

The only time I purchased a pre-modded doll, it was to 'rescue' it - and it really only had small scarring mods and the like. Otherwise, I wouldn't buy a modded doll for my collection, unless it was something like a very nice face-reshaping (I like the look of Chiwoos-turned-Woosoo, for instance) or a good eye-opening. I'm a sucker for dreaming-eyed dolls, though.
And unless the mod is really freaking awesome, I'm not paying much more for it than its original going price.
Commissioned mods are a totally different story XD

It all depends on the mod. I would buy a modded doll, absolutely, but only if I like the general look. So it's a strictly case by case basis for me.

Echoing others, and saying that it depends on what the modification was and how well it was done.
For my personal taste, I'm not into extreme gore mods or girl-to-boy mods (I think, in general, these are not well-executed or convincing - though I will admit I have seen some that work very well), nor am I interested in elf ears and whatnot.
Small modifications don't bother me so much: for example, I bought an old F-28 that had been modded slightly to look more like Lucas. No problem there. Really, though, it's case-by-case, but the most important thing is making sure whatever mods have been done are done well!

I don't have any specific looks in mind for my dolls ahead of time, so a good interesting mod might make me want a head, it might not. I couldn't tell you until I see it.

As far as mods go, I'd never buy a doll with extensive scaring and/or gore mods, or girl-to-boy body mods. Then again, never is a strong word to use. I've seen someone buy a girl-to-boy modded doll (sans down-south modding), and the original company was kind enough to sell her a new chest piece for a low price. If I could do something similar, I wouldn't mind buying a girl-to-boy. If the price was right. =x
Also, I don't think I'd get a doll with extensive 'character specific' scarring. Some scarring is cool, because I like the look, but I've seen some with really unique scar work done. It'd be hard to work your character around something like that I think. I'm iffy on eye-mods. It really depends on how they've been done I guess. =D
So saying all that, I have a few dolls I'm planning that will have some extensive 'character specific' scarring done. Thankfully I'm greedy and once a doll is mine, it's always going to be mine in my mind. If I ever got out of the hobby, I'd probably just put them out for display only before I'd resort to selling.

Eyes mods (turning a dreaming head into awake head) is a maybe. Now if I can still buy a non dreaming head from the company I would prefer that cause I don't see the point in buying something that has been modded second hand when I can buy it unmodded brand new.
Ears I'm not liking cause I don't want to take that off. Fingers that have been sanded to be thinner (somewhat common on Volks dolls), no way cause that has a chance of it being weak and a finger breaking. Major major mods are a total no no (gore mods or piercings that are not easily fixed). If I could handle the doll before buying maybe, online only no way.

I can't stand pierced ears. I won't buy a doll from the manufacturer if they have pierced ears. I won't buy modded dolls with piercings.
Other than that, it's on a case by case basis. It all depends on who did it, how good the photos are, and what I'm looking for. Opened eyes I won't buy. I like to open them myself. I'm very picky about eye shape, it's a big thing on what sculpts I will or will not buy.
I won't buy mods that change the shape of noses. I like big pointy noses, any thing that reduces that makes me mad.
One thing that really ticked me off was when I bought a Misty Rose elf Pepe and the modifications had not been specified, or I just didn't notice. The toes were separated. Why would anyone want to risk that?! Their toes are so tiny anyway. I just can't stand it.
Most people may not consider it a mod but badly sanded seams bother me as well. It doesn't make sense to call the seams sanded when they have been taken down so far that they are now groves in the side of the doll instead of ridges.
So, pretty much a mod has to be spectacular before I even consider to buy it.

I don't mind buying dolls with mods- as long as i know the mods are well done. Pierced ears doesn't bother me either.
One thing that I personally would never buy would be a doll with modded genetalia. I don't know why, but it just...freaks me out :/

I have one modded doll in my collection now, and it's not a large modification. Valen's eyes were opened just a little more than the normal dreaming El. I find mods a difficult thing, because it's one of those subjective things.
For example, I don't consider ear piercing to be a mod if it's done by the company, and while two of my dolls have pierced ears, only one actually has earrings because the wigs get caught in them or they can't be seen.
Zombie/gore mods are right out in my book, though I can appreciate that some people might find the technical skill and overall look of a good (again subjective) mod appealing. One that comes to mind is the MNF Shushu that is owned by Heceta on DoA. While her mods are not for me, it's still incredibly well done.

Hm, if it's a type of mod I don't care for I simply won't be interested, the same as if it were a doll right from the company that just doesn't catch my attention. And if it is interesting, then it would be a matter of how well it's done.
Even then, I'd be willing to do a certain ammount of "repair". However, the one thing that gets me is horribly botched jobs, and then someone tries to sell those poor mutilated dolls for higher prices because of their "mods":mad
The bad, scratchy and uneven eye mods especially get me...
That said, I would actualy be willing to rescue a mottled, scrached or scuffed body, as I have at least one doll that almost requires something extreme like that.

I sand my dolls, and my Weros is a modified girl-boy mod (kind-of.)
Depending on the body, girl-boy mods are either okay, or kind of odd looking. When I see CP girl mods, they look oddly out of proportion to me. But I used a Bobobie girl body for Weros, which is less curvy (and larger,) and it looks great to me. The proportions look good, none of the abnormally small chest area I tend to see on the CP mods. As Weros is supposed to be a hermaphrodite, I was happy with the middle ground that the Bobobie body provided (Along with the big feet, which the first set of Bobobie girls had.)
As for other mods, it would completely depend on the situation. I have all original character dolls, so scars in the wrong places and what not wouldn't work. All my planned doll "scarrings" will be painted, not permanent. ^_^ That way I can tweak them as I like later.
~Anrui
Personally, I'm not a fan of gore or fantasy type mods, like animal or elf ears, etc.
Otherwise I adore facial modifications beyond pierced ears and eye-opening. I consider it like dolly cosmetic surgery ^^ 4 of my dolls have facial mods.
it's interesting to look at mods... even tho i'm not a fan of massive modding, like some japanese girl who took an isao and turned it into a whole original doll with no resemblance to the original... mostly because i don't get the point of taking a headmold if you don't like how it looks even the least bit.. whatmore when other ppl would die to have it (i'm not an isao fan in particular, but it is limited and popular). but as for "minor" modding - i just hate when dolls get their noses sanded ._.; especially the pretty noses that i love: F16/Lucas, Reisner or Tony, i love them for being sharp and big... when i got my F16 guy i knew he was sanded, and his eyes were modded too, but i double checked that his nose stayed the original ^^;
but anyway, to each his own... i still enjoy looking at anything, i just won't buy xD

Hmmm....anything done by Onegreyelephant, I would buy. Because those are some SKILLED mods.
Beyond that...I generally prefer to do my own modifications. But I wouldn't turn down a doll just because it was modded. It would all depend on what I was planning for the doll.

Hm, in thinking back, there are a few more mods that I would avoid like the plauge. Basically what was done to poor Charity. I helped Darkmothflame restore the poor girl to life. She was represented as a handmade artists doll, but the pictures weren't that clear. When the poor owner opened the box she was met with a doll's face that looked like a Bratz-painted bulldog. There was no way to identify the original sculpt other than maker (it was DZ Fenyo). Her body was covered in multiple layers of gloopy airbrushed paint. 3 layers of various dark flesh, some sparkly gold, and purple paint all above a diabolical white primer. The mods to her face were done with an inappropriate clay that was actually somewhat soft and flaked off but there was still a lot of sanding that needed to be done... It took the two of us weeks.
Fortunately Charity is now a lovely and well-loved little girl, but I guess it just goes to show, that horror can go beyond gore mods.

While I generally like seeing modded dolls done by their owners, I don't think I'll ever buy any doll that's been modified in any way. Maybe if it's just ear piercing, I will consider. But if it's any big modifications like gore, gender (body-wise) or even minor nose modifications, I won't buy it.

For the most part, I don't tend to buy dolls with mods. However, that's probably due to the fact many of the dolls I want people don't mod.
Mods I won't even consider though are ones that are done badly, or ones that cannot be easily fixed up to look better. I don't like eyes modded disproportionately open, permanent facial piercings, or extreme mods to the face (such as severely sanded noses, lips, cheeks, etc). Slight mods that make the doll look better as a whole I don't mind at all though. I've found myself falling in love with one too many Japanese custom modded heads. ^ ~

I recently modded a Ttori elf, and made him very punk with lots of piercings, an eye mod for bruising, and an open wound on his cheek..it was fun, and I know most wouldn't buy him..but he's pretty kewl in my eyes..
for what I wouldn't buy?..I am not into the really grotesque mods, with oozing, gooey sores and burns..just not my thing..I like to look and see how well they are done, but not something I would want...

I'd probably be willing to buy anything that I thought was cool or neat. Not the burned ones, but scars, modded cheeks or eyes, piercings, (lovecraftian ones that I've seen on DoA) pretty much anything that I thought worked.

I have a habit of buying dolls that are too ugly for anyone else to want. I have brought home some very, very badly modded, messed up dollies. That is the truth.
Some are easily fixed with just a better faceup, or with some resin work (I can't do faceups or resin work, but I am fortunate to have skilled professionals around me who can). Some are just stuck as they are, but I love them anyway and eventually they fit right in in their own way.
However, to those who like me would be a "rescuer" there is something to consider in the "rescue" of modded dolls. What you might view as a "rescue" the modder might very well consider "approval" and take as "someone likes my mods!"
I purchased two very beat up dolls from a remarkably unskilled modder, to repair and restore. They're beautiful now, but the modder took it as a sign that people liked their work, and took the money I paid for them and bought another doll that they completely ruined. There is no fixing this one. And I feel bad that I (even inadvertently) encouraged that.
I would buy a skillfully modded doll now, but I don't think I'd ever encourage another amateur modder. I couldn't live with myself knowing I'd encouraged someone to vandalize something I consider a piece of art (and I think all dollies have the potential to be art).

I do sometimes want to "rescue" dolls, fortunately or unfortunately I don't have the funds to buy like that. I could see that it might be fun and challenging to do that though.
I think that people who drastically mod or Frankenstien their dolls should be resigned to keeping them. I think unless you are an extremely talented artist the risk is too great, and even if you are it may not be to everyone's taste. So I would say go ahead and do any mod you want, but don't expect to be able to sell it.

A year ago, I probably would have said I'd never buy a modded doll... that clearly didn't last long. XD
Six months ago I would have said I would never have bought a girl-to-boy mod... that didn't stick either.
Since my dolls rarely sit around naked, I don't even notice the proportion difference with Pica's body. He looks completely normal to me in what he wears and it must not just be me because I've had people comment to me that they never would have realized he was a former girl body had I not shown them his chest.
For me, I can't really say what I will or won't buy until I see the doll in question. Seeing it in person beforehand certainly helps, as well as dealing with a good, trustable person during the transaction.

I bought a girl to boy modded body second hand because the character called for a shorter and more slender build than is available from boy bodies on the market (he's still not 'complete' but that doesn't bother me since he doesn't exactly hang around with no pants), the modding is extremely well done so I definately don't regret buying it.
Scar wise, one of my boys is currently waiting for his scars to be made perminant and again it's purely character based. I would never buy a doll that's modded in a way that doesn't suit the character.
I also plan to give my next boy a lip piercing and will probably mod the eyes of his dreaming head open so I suppose full on gore is probably the only mod I wouldn't really bother with.

Oooooh, I remember poor Charity! The poor little thing, her mods were such crud :damnit I gasped when I saw her original photos... and then when I saw what you guys did with her, I was stunned!! Truly one of the best rescues I've ever seen :clap
I purchased a modded head from a friend, with the intention of fixing her up... but instead I just gave her a faceup to "tide her over" until I got the epoxy, and I just never got around to finishing her. Poor little thing, I really wish I'd had the time, drive, and skill to repair her, but she went to a new home where her new owner was going to fix her up. :)
From now on, I don't think I'm going to be taking anymore fixup dolls. Just don't have the time, sadly...

I don't like mods, partly because none of my dolls are characters. For me, they are objects of beauty and beauty doesn't include holes, scars, gouges, or tatoos.
If I am reading about a doll for sale and see that it was altered in some way, I move on.
I think that opening the eyes of a sleeping doll would be alright if you can't tell that it has been done. I like perfection for my lovelies.

I don't necessarily need "perfection" in fact I like it when something is a little imperfect, it seems more natural that way. In fact what really galls me is when I see dolls who have been modded to be perfectly symetrical.

I think I would be okay with a mod as long as 1) I knew about it, just to be up front, and 2) it appealed to my aesthetic. That's really what I love about BJDs anyway; the wonderful characters that have been created (some with mods, some without).

I don't know which I wouldn't buy but i have a love of overly opened eye mods, they allow me to sculpt in new eyelids without worrying about cutting 'too much 'out lol
I *love* mods. I don't know what I *wouldn't* buy - there have been a bunch I haven't - but I really love good facial resculpting.
I mean, I can't say what doesn't appeal to me. If I said "I don't like open mouths," tomorrow the best head in the world with an open mouth might go up for sale. :) Rather, I'd say that mods that enhance the sculpts - body mods that allow for better posing or head compatibility, facial mods that use the heads as a foundation and bring out the artistry of the modder and another beautiful version of the head - make me really happy.
For me, mods that I really won't buy are cuts and bruises that are actually etched on the resin, therefore non-erasable. Also, I won't buy modded girl bodies wherein the breasts are sanded off and other such extreme mods. I've had liked a lot of eye-opening mods though. :)

I don't think I could ever own a doll with heavy gore. I love seeing it but then I turn off the computer or go home. I'm extremely visual and and I have a good imagination. I can imagine feelings, and the feelings I'd imagine looking at a wounded doll with nothing better to do...are feelings I don't want to feel all the time in my own home.

For some reason, I don't really like the idea of buying a previously owned doll. I'm weird. O.o;
But if I did, I wouldn't buy ones with
- eye opening mods (unless they are done EXTREMELY well and look natural/good (to me))
- gore/scar mods
- third eye mods
- female to male/vice versa
That's all I can think of for now. ^^;

The only time I purchased a pre-modded doll, it was to 'rescue' it - and it really only had small scarring mods and the like.
I admit to being bitten by that bug... I like doing mods, but I need more practice. If I find a damaged head or a mod-gone-horribly-awry on sale for a discounted price, I can't resist buying it. I am currently working on a NaNuRi 07 that had an overdone eye mod (permanent surprise expression); I am working on closing the eyes a little. It's a great way for me to practice my own modding without fear of "ruining" an expensive doll. And when I finally get the job finished, I have a doll I love that has my own work put into it.
That being said, other mods all depend on the mod. If it strikes my fancy, I'll buy it, but I can't think of specific instances... For example, I like some "third eye" mods, I don't care for others... it's all about that specific modding job and my tastes.

There are few mods I would be accepting of if I were to buy a previously loved doll. Basicaly only eye openings, elf ears, and facial touching up (sanding down the cheeks or nose a bit here and there to change the look of the scuplt). I don't think I would even really concider a doll with peirced ears unless I knew for certain that the character for the doll would be wearing earings 24/7.

For me I guess it depends on the mod itself. I don't like gore mods. Not into gore. I do find it interesting to look at other's dolls with such mods but would never buy/own one myself.
I also wouldn't want the ears to be pierced bcause I would rather have that done myself (send it off to someone I know/trust) and because, so far, none of my dolls wears earrings. XD
Eye opening is one thing I'd really consider (apart from the odd picture of someone sleeping or just waking up, I have absolutely no use for sleeping/dreaming dolls), but then I'd definitely need to see very good, clear, close-up pics of the eye mods before considering it.
Ear mods as well. I love elves so a good elf ear is okay (again, need to see pics) and maybe some fatnasy ears depending.. I like vampires as well so I wouldn't want to buy a vamp head where the teeth had been sanded off.
So, um, yeah.. eye mods are (probably) okay and elf ears. Anything else is probably out.

Well, I have a weakness for Kaye Wiggs' mods that she does---I love the Rem. Nabee head that she opened the eyes on MUCH more than I do my "untouched" Nabee. I love the shape of the eye openings she does...they seem much more "human" than the factory ones. She opened the eyes on a K-doll Karon and now SHE is a sweet, freckled child with endless appeal, miles from the slitty-eyed original (sorry if some of you love him!)
I have no opinion on ear piercing at all. I think I only have one doll with pierced ears, and I own no doll earrings, so she keeps in the ones she arrived in. I don't like gore, scars, bruising or any other appearance of abuse. And the thought of a girl-to-boy body mod gives me the screaming meemies, although I HAVE sometimes wished some of my girls were not so well-endowed and could wear period outfits better.
Gah, I sound like Betty Crocker. Back to my "pretty" dolls! :yey

Case by case basis, for sure. Some mods I don't mind; it depends on the mod, the doll, and the price.
I like some but not all piercings. I like androgyny, so some of the more gender-bending mods are fine by me. Mods that change the expressions give me the most trouble; it has to look like a natural, not a forced, expression for me to be okay with it.
I dislike mods that remove qualities that are sort of the key points of a mold because I don't much see the point of buying a head and then removing every feature that identifies it as that head. I love those slit, droopy eyed mean looking dolls, and it makes me sad everytime I see Tohya or Kohya turned goo-goo eyed with their eyes opened. So I would never buy a head that has been changed like that.
I also would be really loathe to buy a doll who's ears have been actually pierced.

I think it depends on the mods and the headmold.
For me, if I'm looking to an specific mold, and the mod is very light (like opening the eyes a bit or ear pierced), and it's a very difficult mold to find, I would buy it because I don't know when I would see it again, right?

I had no idea so many people felt mods were so unappealing. I must admit, I dont care for girl to boy mods at all, but anything thats done well is just as much art as the original mold. I hate facial piercings on real people, but Ive seen peirced dolls i wouldnt mind bringing home. I love well done elf ears, eye openings, cheeck sandings and so on includeing drastic changes.
*shyly points to avatar* never in my life would I have expected to own a zombie mod. zombies scare the hell out of me, even Shaun of the Dead gave me nightmares the first time I saw it and these dolls have so much character I would almost expect to go paranoid living with somthing that had been intentionally "harmed/damaged" like there would be bad vibes or somthing. I never even thought I would buy any doll that wasnt blank, but the second I saw Sane on ebay I needed him and he is the single most beautiful doll I have ever seen on the internet or in person, no exceptions what so ever. I can stare at that doll for hours. he has way more depth than any other doll Ive seen, and I consider him a more enchanting work of art than all the beautiful rare volks molds, and untouched company faceuped dolls Ive ever encountered (no offense to the incredibly sweet owners of said beautiful dolls, but those who know me know how biased I am to Sane)
so I would buy anything that calls out to me, I dont care whats been changed, as long as its beautiful in my eyes, and I think i would buy any onegreyelephant mod I happend to come across with the appropriate ammount of money in my hand, even if it was a movd I didnt normally like, her work is really just that amazing.

I love to look at mods, but I don't think I would ever buy one.
Well, maybe a dreaming head with a little eye-opening done to it. (maybe.) But, it would have to be really well done.

I like to look at mods but there are some mods I really dislike, if that sort of mod rocks the boat of someone then ok do it. It's just my own personnal opinion here..
_mod a girl body to be a boys body... never understood why people bother to do this when there's already many types of male bodies.
- mods that change the structure too heavilly. Like make the mold look like an animal... I've seen very ugly ones that makes me wanna scream (WHAT DID YOU DO TO THIS DOLL??!!!)
I don't mind sanding of the face or opening eyes if they are well done. But for me less is more.

I'd have to side with the No group on any extreme modding. Pierced ears I don't mind, as I love making jewelry & earrings. (My Narae has pierced ears) Otherwise scarring, carved and badly-done gore mods are unappealing. The Lovecraftian ones are intersting as an art piece, but I wouldn't buy one. I love the beautiful girls and boys too much.

Gore mods, period. :barf
Other than that, poorly done mods. I'm buying a head that has had it's eyes opened. I asked for a lot of pics before I sent money though. It looked like whoever did the opening did so very carefully.
If it looked like someone hacked away with an ice pick, I wouldn't bother PMing further questions.
I'm waiting on a bambi crony body that's got a slight mod to the torso. The seller/person who did mod sent me tons of pics. Now the body can bend over even more so and kinda touch it's toes. :doh

For me it all depends on how good the modder is. I love well done open eye mods, and I own multiple modded elf ears and piercings. Gore mods don't do anything for me personally, but I can appreciate the asthetic value.

I have to say that when I chose to mod my DZ Ying I knew I would not be re-selling him. Because of his unique backstory I chose to get his ears modded so they look like the tips have been torn and are bloody/bruised. He also has a scar on his lip, and his eyes and lips are modded a little. These mods are all for his particular backstory, and I can't see anyone going "Wow, I love his ears! I want him!" in a sales situation. I would never sell him, but even if I tried or had to I know I wouldn't get offers.
As for what I would buy, I think it really depends on whether the mod is personal or not. If someone has several piercings in their dolls ears/nose/face/body/etc I would consider buying the doll, but if they had something personal like scratch marks on the cheek or a particular scar, I would not want to buy the modded doll and try to figure out what to do with the mods.

Mods are usually very, very personal to go along with a particular character. Where s/he is pierced, has scars, other marks, unique facial features, and so on. So when a doll is so personalized, it can feel alien to buy it customized to someone else's design. Buying an existing mold is just specific enough to fit our characters, but we all consider them "blank slates" to project more unique traits on. So even though I love seeing mods, from benign to extreme, I would rather buy a blank slate and try to mod it myself. I might not do as a job as some of the hobby's superstar modders, but I love that feeling of creating something myself! :D
Traits generic enough to pass would include piercings or slight facial feature mods, but that's really it for me.
The only exception is a modified sleeping MNF Chiwoo, because sometimes I dream of a Woosoo Jr-type. :3

I don't think I would buy a modded doll unless I was familiar with the customizer. There's too much risk involved.
I agree. I'm one to pay attention to detail and if it isn't perfect I have issues. That's why I don't send my dolls to get modded, nor do I do anything drastic myself because I don't trust my skill level. If I know the modder and trust their work, then maybe I'll reconsider. But otherwise, sanding seam lines and maybe a slight nose job is the extent of what I'll do. No full body mods or heavy face mods for me, please.

Often, an eye mod has prevented me from buying a doll head. I like modding the eyes and the face myself, so I'd rather find an unmodified head and start from scratch.

I've purchased modded heads without a qualm. I mod almost all my dolls anyway, so it's nothing to me to keep building on what someone else has done. I even bought a head who's eyes (lids down to the upper cheak bone) had been gouged out, just to see if I could fix her.
I'm less inclined to buy a modded body, however. The mods most people do to bodies are not ones I would want done (nipple sanding) or that I do very well and would rather do myself (seam removal, internal mobility work).

I bought a modded Gena head on ebay. She's got scars, but I love her face, she looks like survivor to me. Some mods I wouldn't buy, I mentally go ouch with sanding down breasts, overall it depends on the doll. I'm still waiting to get my Gena a body, but I'm sure the reason the person sold her is that her head needs to be modded to fit on other bodies. I'll get around to it eventually, but haven't yet. I've decided I'm not going to say never to anything with this hobby as you never know when a doll will appeal. I've also seen a couple of dolls modded to look like the corpse bride with their cheeks modded. I've liked both of them and one was up for auction and went for a really good price. I plan to make my own eventually, I've always loved the corpse bride.

Most mods I've wanted on a doll are things like opening eyes on a sleep head and ear piercings. I'm pretty conservative when it comes to mods. I wouldn't want to buy a doll that needs a lot of work as I would have to find someone willing to do it and most of you know that can run into a substanial amount of money. I have considered buying a Volks doll and having the doll's nose modified some (made smaller). Some of the resin kids do need nose jobs.

if it is some kind of special mod like scarring or adding a third eye something that actually takes away big parts of the doll, I wouldnt buy. something small like sanding that makes the doll lookbetter I wouldnt mind though

I wouldn't buy a mod that makes eyes bigger ha ha(I don't mean opening up a sleeping head's eyes) but other than that...pretty much anything that's well done that catches my eye I would buy :D I've kinda wanted a doll with a third eye since I saw dolkot's moon with a 3rd eye a year or so ago. some of the zombie and gore mods are hella cool so I wouldn't mind owning one of them even though it'd probably scare me to death to sleep in the same room as it XD

I'm far more attracted to the extreme mods, the third eyes, the second pairs of arms, the centaur legs and so on, especially when they're convincingly done. Outside of the Soom monthly dolls there's very few dolls that are pure fantasy creatures who aren't elves, vampires or demons, so it's really cool to see others.
The minor face mods I'm less enamoured with mostly because they tend to be very personal, to make the doll look like a specific character. Since it isn't one of my characters there's no real appeal there for me.

I am not to much for the zombie mods ( teeth showing through cheeks, bones showing) I do think that they are really neat and I do like zombies and zombie movies but I dont want a zombie doll.
Or a very scarred doll ( the scars with the red welts or blood) That doesnt intersest me to much...
Hmmm Probably scarr face. Just looking at it and it hurt me so bad. Imagining that the doll might feel painful too. YoY
generally i don't buy modded dolls, even i love the headmold... because the mods that i would like to be done on that doll are not the same^^"

I would buy a modded doll but, like everything else, it needs to be in good condition. Not excellent as that would be delusional but good. Should it affect the price? I'm unsure. I suppose it would vary by a case/case situation such as how extensive the mod is. Separation of fingers or toes would be less of a price impact than say, closing the eyes.
Some mods might draw me to purchase a particular doll.
I currently want a SwD SchA with the eyes slightly opened as that's less work/time/money on my part if one is already available. I'd also prefer for the lips/cheeks to be sanded down slightly. I'd also want it to be on a girl SD13 swarrico [sp?] body. I don't even know if the swarrico is available for the SD13 sized dolls so that's potentially another mod. The fingers need to be separated as well. Obviously, the mods start to add up. But that's what drew me to the hobby in the first place~ it's the versatility. I'm sure if I were to ever sell that doll by happenstance, it'd go for far less then what I paid despite how well done the mods may be.
I also think the idea of modding is often look down upon to some extent. The attitude seems to be similar to that of wiping faceups on LEs. As if a modded doll [even if the mod is minute] is considerably less valuable then one in its original state.

Sometimes seeing modded dolls makes me want them more, even if it's not particularly good. Cause in the back of my mind I'm scheming on how I could improve that particular mold. =3

Modded dolls don't really bother me to much. Sometimes it makes me want to buy them more because they're so unique and different! But if they mod is super extreme I might be turned off by it because it would't suit my little family ^^;.
I recently bought a modded faceplate though that had it's eyes opened. It fit perfectly with my plans of making an anime mini mee XD;

My first hasn't arrived yet, but something tells me that I'll have at least two SD13's and two 70cm's and four mini's, a total of eight if my future finances will allow it. However, I'm okay with just sticking to two or three. (A single parent and two children. I'll bet my favorite pair of shoes it'll be a single mom.) But I'd prefer four the most. (Parents or older brothers/sisters and children/younger siblings.)

I don't think I would buy a modded doll. Maybe if it were something like sanding to make the mold more symmetrical, or opening the eyes of a sleeping mold - but only if I had seen and trusted the quality of the modder's prior work.
I do like seeing the interesting and varied mods on bjds, but most of it is not for me.

I think for me it all depends on the quality of the mod and what the mod looks like compared to what I want for a character.
I'm a sucker for things like extra eye mods, horns, hooves and the like but I wouldn't by webbed ear mods or mermaid tails.

I love seeing mods done on dolls. I love seeing scars, for example, and I enjoy seeing eye openings that are done well to reinvent a particular sculpt. But, there are three types of mods that bother me:
1) Piercings
2) Paint Attack/Tattoo Fever
3) Multiple mediums glued together
No matter what doll I buy regardless of type, medium or size... the sculpt matters. The shape of the torso, the curl of the fingers, the expressiveness of the lips. Everything must come together to "wow" me. For me, piercings distract my eye from the sculpt which, for me, is the most important part of the doll. Same with dolls that are covered in goop or excessive tattoos. Don't misunderstand me - I like tattoos and artistically painted dolls - but they can't distract my eye from the sculpt. I like them to compliment it. And, I can't seem to sell myself a doll made up of different mediums no matter how hard I try. If a doll is resin, I want it to be ALL resin and not resin with attachments glued on. In pictures it may look fine but in real life? I doubt it. I also can't see those kinds of attachments lasting the test of time particularly since the resin will change color over time and the attachments will not.
That said, I love seeing ALL mods since I think these dolls were made to allow people to express their creativity no matter how they do that.

I won't buy modded dolls unless it's something like small ear piercings or if the seams have been sanded.
If there's a certain sculpt that I like a lot, I want it to be as close to the original as possible.
For months, I was looking for a Souldoll Tiffee, but two of those I found were modded. One had really lovely elf ears, but Tiffee's big ears are a huge reason as to why I like her.
Does anyone else feel that most mods should detract from the value of a doll?

I've only bought a modded mnf dreaming Woosoo head once and it wasn't too bad. His eyes were slightly opened and I finished them to my liking, but I'd prefer buying a unmodded doll. I wouldn't really consider 1 well done piercing in each ear to be a mod, but I'd never buy a doll that's been drastically changed from it's original look. I think some mods are beautiful if done correctly, but it's just not something I'm comfortable spending a lot of money on.
I will never buy a doll with:
1) 3rd eye :(
2) Overkill on scars
3) Permanent facial piercings or too many ear piercings
4) Poorly carved scars
5) Drastically changed Faces or bodies

I don't know if this is considered a mod...but hair...as in body hair. Ewww! I don't like the thought of having pubic hair on my doll...and scars that are scratched into the resin...I could not have that. Certain piercings are okay. And I definitely wouldn't buy a girl doll with sanded down "ta-tas"...If I want a boy doll...then I will buy a boy doll. ^_^

I am of the opinion that I would be unlikely to buy a doll that has been heavily modified unless it was done by an "industry professional" with a good reputation and the doll was to my tastes.
Would I buy a doll on order from a professional modifier as a custom job? Most certainly.

Actually, I probably wouldn't buy a modded doll, period. Not even with tiny ear piercings. I really strongly prefer to have the original.
I don't dislike all mods. I like seeing dolls with modded eye shapes, provided it is done well. But I don't intend to ever own a modded doll.

I'm not actually all that picky about mods to dolls. If something suits what I'm looking for, original sculpt vs mod doesn't actually seem to make a difference for me.
Heck, when I was looking for a body for my Breakaway, I wanted a very heavily modded body- Luts still, but I wanted a girl body modded down to boy. No luck, and eventually I got impatient and he's got a regular boy body until I can find him a "proper" one.

I was thinking about the mods that I would like. And for the most part, I don't like mods. I'd be ok with ear piercings if they were in scale and not numerous.
