View Full Version : Do you mind if they get dirty?

So, I have a tendency to take my boys outside, and just generally to play with them a lot, and pose them a lot, and change them a lot. The end result naturally being: they get dirty.

Now, head/faceup area aside, I find that this actually doesn't really bother me much if at all. It's a natural result of playing with them for one, and for another in some cases it rather suits them. And generally overall they don't look all that different when dirty.

That said, if I'm about to take them out for a big event or a doll show or something and find that they're dirty (particularly if it's somewhere obvious, like hands or arms) I'm like those annoying mothers who spit on their hanky to wipe dirt off your face -- I get dreadfully embarassed and I clean them desperately so that no-one can see what "poor care" I take of them.

But is it really poor care, or is it just the nature of playing with them? Especially sine the whole point of them is for them to be played with?

(I also admit that I do enjoy, on occasion, stripping them and giving them sponge baths. But usually only once they're pretty dirty, because, like vaccuuming, there's no point doing it if you can't see the difference it makes. ;) But that could also be related to me being a bit of a slob...)

Anyway, I was just curious how other people viewed it. :) So what are your thoughts? Does it bother you to get them dirty or do you make an effort to keep them as clean as possible at all times? Does it bother you if other people see that you've let them get dirty? Do you think it really matters in the long run?

Well, it's nice when they're clean, but I like to handle them a lot, so they don't stay that way. I don't worry about it, since dirt, fabric stains, etc. washes right off. I'm very carefull not to touch their faces, but that's about it. If someone is really obviously dirty and we're going to a meetup, then I'll wipe them off beforehand. I bought my dolls to enjoy, and just sticking them on a shelf and leaving them is not enjoyable to me, so they won't stay pristine.

Hmmmm...
I pretty much try to keep them clean all the time. I usually don't mind if their clothes get dirty. (i.e. Sitting on a rock, my hands are a little dirty) But I was showing Seth to someone that was interested in them and I noticed that his arm joints had gathered some dirt/dust from sticking to the hot glue sueding. I was a little embarassed. Especially since he was the first doll she'd ever seen. (I'm all about spreading the BJD-itis) Within the week, I had him unstrung and went over him completely with the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser + water. (Unfortuanately, that also took off some of the hot glue that was making him pose better. :XD)
I've also seen a few dolls that could use some TLC. I just don't understand how someone can let them get that dirty. Though in their defense, I think it was a first/only doll.

It definitely bothers me! Riley has definitely gotten a little dirty around her forehead and headcap - which you can't see because of her wig. But I still feel terrible about it being there because I feel like I'm not taking amazing care of Evenstar's work. But because I do tend to change her wigs, I suppose that's just a product of playing and handling her a lot, and that sort of wear shows how much I totally adore her. At least, that's what I'm trying to tell myself. If it were another face-up, I don't think her headcap and forehead getting dirty would be that big of an issue, but this is something I can't easily replace. :<

Besides that, Riley also has a lot of marks on her body from her tattoo staining a bit... that I never bother to clean off because a) you can't seem them in photos or it's covered by her clothes and b) she'll just get marked up again anyway. XD

Yes and no. If I see a smudge on my girls, I'll either rub it off with my fingers or clean it off with soap and water. On the other hand, dirt in their seams, smeared paint from a tattoo job, or my blood on them doesn't set me off. (Well, I did wipe the blood, but I didn't wash it off, so its still there though you can't see it.)

Living in Arizona where you can clean everything from top to bottom and the dust will be back in two hours, I can't really keep the dolls as clean as some because in addition to the lovely desert I also handle them quite a bit and take them outside. When it's just myself, my roommate and/or some close friends I don't particularly care if they're a little bit dirty, but every time I go to a meet-up I haul them all out and attack them with a Mr. Clean eraser--if I don't the dirt just seems far too obvious and as I already struggle with their wigs I don't want to have them dirty as well ^^;

Pretty much nature of the beast, if you handle your dolls and play with them they are going to get to get dirty. Ours get a lot of handling because they are our clothing models as well.

I tend to be a bit like you, frantic clean before taking them out or before a photoshoot. ;)

For me, the alternative is putting them back in their box, handling them with cotton gloves and having something that resembles a resin statue instead of a family member.

'Can't stand it.

I don't like them or their outfits getting dirty, and I do everything I can (within reason-) to prevent it... But like Moggie said, it's just the nature of the beast that they're going to get grubby if you tinker with them. No matter how careful you are to wash your hands and to sit them places that haven't been covered in sticky gunk, sooner or later grime is still going to happen.

So, I accept the inevitable and clean them. As often as they need it... 'Small enough price to pay for having them out and around to play with, I figure.

Like Brightfires said, I do mind when their outfits gets dirty...it's hard to clean and ironing tiny shirts afterwards isn't something I excel at.

The dolls themselves I wouldn't mind if their arms or legs get a bit of dirt from posing outdoors (or just randomly even if they're in perfectly clean places @_@), but I clean the dirt whenever I see it. And I also do the "annoying mother" thing to make sure they're spotless before they go out for meets XD.

Sometimes it's just hard to avoid dirt outside. That doesn't keep me from taking them out for pictures, but I do make sure they don't sit on especially yucky places or step in mud or the like. And I avoid grease at all costs--it's more evil than dirt *laughs*.

I try to keep 'em as clean as possible, but still play with them a lot. Their clothes getting durty is also something I really don't desire and I'm actually easier freaked out when there is a stain on the outfit than a stain on a doll. (sponges do wonders on dolls, but not so much on a pair of jeans)

I have a kind of Velveteen Rabbit approach to my rezin!kidz. They should look a little 'loved' and played with. I want them where I am. I play with them daily, change their clothes often, take lots of pictures, usually outdoors, carry them on errands and out 'visiting'.

Sure they get dirty, but that's easily fixed and I enjoy 'bath days'. It's relaxing and a nice bonding experience to clean them up after a outings or a trip when they're looking a little grubby.

I don't mind at all if my guys get grubby!! I take them outside all the time for photo shoots and put them down on the grass and dirt!! They get dusty sitting around my house but I give them a wipe over when I notice the dust and grime building up..lol...I find my guys hands get grubby very quick! I use my magic sponge a lot!!.......

I accept that they'll get dirty but usually if I noticed smudges or marks it's when I'm changing clothes and it's an opportunity for a Mr. Clean sponge-bath. Last valentine's day I was dressing them all for an underwear-themed meetup and they ALL got baths, because (a) it was a meetup and I like to show them off clean and pretty, and (b) underwear sure doesn't hide much. -_-;;

I do get an reasonable degree of satisfaction from getting them all nice and clean, though. Just not so much that I'll obsess over it. In the final analysis, laziness wins out over OCD.

I don't really mind it so much. So long as it isn't REALLY bad. I agree with Marsh, they should look a lil' loved. Not to say those that are spotless aren't loved either. ;D It just warms my heart to see them a bit used. ^_^

Who doesn't love saying "you're a dirty, dirty girl"?

I play with my dolls like everyone else and I clean them when it's noticeable. What does bother me is how often it must be done. I find Hush gets dirtiest the quickest, she's a dirt magnet. I find I'm saying while I wash her is "didn't I just do this??"
Maybe all dollfies get dirty because they want that extra attention. Or to piss you off >.>

When I first got my doll, I was obsessive about keeping him clean, to the point of stripping him down, taking off his wig, and carefully placing him in his big blue box every single night before bedtime. For a while, I wouldn't even let myself touch him unless I washed my hands first!! I soon got over that once he got a chair to sit in and started taking him outside for photo shoots. I try to keep his clothes as neat and clean as possible, though. When I do notice a bit of smudge on his hands and arms, I give him a Magic Eraser sponge bath, but that's only when he needs it. A bit of dirt adds to the realism, I think!

Which reminds me...Darren is due for a bath and a restringing soon! heheh

I don't mind getting them dirty from being played with everyday, but if they remain grungy for more than a few days (due to me not having time to clean them) I start to get a little neurotic. Some of their tattoos have a tendency to attract lint or dye, so every few weeks I have to carefully wash them down. And my Yo's fur wig needs to be blasted with canned air to get rid of the dust that settles on it even when he's covered up @___@

Oh, but if a doll arrives to me dirty? SO gross. I wash anything that I receive in the mail, so when I washed this one doll and discovered that it was a completely different shade under the hand gunk...aaaaaaaaa DX

It's natural that it happens but so long as I can clean it off, I'm not going to be very upset about it. It's permanent staining that really upsets me @_@

Well, Fox could use a spot cleaning before the con tomorrow, but in general, he gets a bath when he needs it, and a spot cleaning in between. He's supposed to be a young boy, and therefore I expect him to get a bit dirty. But if he's grubby from being in the trees, or the yard, well, bust out the Mr. Clean Eraser.

Because I do handle my dolls a lot as well, they tend to get dirty. I don't mind it so much when it is just me seeing them, but like many others I have a tendency to clean them up before meets and such. Other than that I'll clean them if I feel like they need it or I'm tired of Winter being shiny (he's my oldest and his resin has been worn very smooth, making him quite shiny at times XD').

In short: As long as their face-ups are okay and the dirt can be removed, I don't mind at all.

I play with them very often for sewing clothes and all more than doing photoshops, but I usually wash my hands a couple of times so they don't get really much dirty; they end getting a bath about a month or two depending on how noticeable is;

Playing outside is another matter! I usually clean them the same day

Also it's true sometimes I take photos of Xune being a little dirty but she is supposed to be an engineer child so her more natural stage is being dirty x'''D (though I won't allow it too much time)

Mine are all quite filthy at the moment! Though I find Raiden is often the worst, I blame it on his very pale skin. :mad

It doesn't really bother me as it's not all that hard to clean them off with a sponge when they get too dirty. I handle them a lot so it's to be expected!

My dolls are not pristine, nor are they filthy. I enjoy playing with them far too much to worry about a little dirt here and there, but if I notice the obvious smudge, I clean it off.

Like Moggie, my dolls are clothing models as well as toys who I take outside and photograph, I expect them to get a little dirty. If they get too dirty, I occasionally strip them down and give them a good bath, but honestly it's not that often. I guess it just isn't that big a deal to me.

I handle my dolls a lot, I pose, change and photograph them often, but because most of them are also my clothing models, I have to be careful for them not getting grubby.
While working on an outfit, I wash my hands 51,468 times a day - and I also enjoy having 'bath-days' for my crew every now and then. But if they weren't my models, I don't think I would care that much. Smudges and lint are inevitable when you enjoy playing with them, and it washes right off.

I don't like when my dolls are dirty, but I don't handle them a lot, either. I don't freak out about it, but if I'm headed to a meetup I'll take a look to make sure there aren't any gross fingerprints or smudges on them (sometimes I eat and then pick them up).

I'll strip them down and give them a good scrubbing every few months or so.

I'm another one who plays with them a lot and We're constantly dragging them around from place to place and bringing them outside. My dolls get dirty but I've always believed that dirt can be removed. Its nothing a sponge bath wont get off. I don't really worry about their clothes either, I can always wash it. Mind you mine only get mildy dirty. Mostly from Photoshoots and sewing. I would feel bad if I just left them sitting on a shelf all day. Like others have said they look loved. Now If I'm going to a meet I will clean them up and I don't intentionally get them dirty but it if happens no big deal. All of may dolls have such pale skin it's almost impossible to get them clean and keep them clean :sweat

It also doesn't help that my Soo Ri tends to gravitate towards the dirt. He always was rough and tumble so I guess it comes naturally to him. He always seems to be the one that if there's a mess, he's likely to be in the middle of it! *_*

And I too am guilty of the "annoying mother" routine. I do it all the time when we're out and about at meets.

So no, I don't really mind as long as its not permanent.

Unless its something I bought from someone else. I mean I wash all of the things I sell very carefully before I send them off and I would expect others to do the same, especially with doll bodies. That would be scary to find it filthy. Other than that, I'm not picky :D

I can always clean them.... I tend to be careful of faces, but that's it. If I was worried about dirt, I would be the sort of person who stores their dolls either in display boxes or on their shipping boxes.. meh, that's NOT why I own them.. they sit in various rooms in my house, people who visiti pickthem up, I drag them around to meets and shows and photo opps in baskets.. my dolls are here to be played with and to be loved.

Ever since I discovered the Mr. Clean Eraser, dirt's just no big deal to me anymore. Like others, my dolls are my sewing models, and even though I do keep my hands relatively clean, dirt happens.

I do tend to clean them up when I'm taking them somewhere or when I have houseguests, but after that, as long as the dirt can be removed sometime when I get around to it, it doesn't bother me.

I don't get too stressed over it, unless its their face for obvious reasons. Like most of the others who have posted, my dolls are here for me to play with and a natural side-effect of that is that they are going to get dirty. If I see a really noticeable smuge, I take care of that right away, but otherwise I don't really stress out about it and just give them a bath every so many weeks or so.

I don't mind too much if they get dirty, I just generally don't let them stay that way. If I notice a big smudge when I'm changing clothes or a mark (and my MSC sponge is handy) I'll give them a quick wipe.

But that being said, this reminds me of one of the reasons why I had to sell that ADORABLE FCS MSD boy you got for me :yey from Sato, Cassiel ...I felt like I had to be SO CAREFUL with the sunlight resin. I love taking my boys outside, carting them around with me, just having them in my lap or near me, and posing them 15 times a day. But the sunlight resin discolored with the slightest knock or careless fingernail. Taking him outside was nearly impossible and even changing his shoes left little scratches that were way too obvious for me. Yikes! :cry Eventually I want another MSD F-10 boy, but I will definitely do normal skin this time around...normal and white skin you can at least be a *little* careless with!

I do a fair job at keeping Rhiannon clean, making sure if I pick her up I hold her where there is fabric to avoid getting her dirty. Then again I made nearly all of her clothes so the fabric getting dirty just doesn't phase me as if I had bought the outfit and it got dirty, I be a little more upset. But her body getting dirty, meh don't matter to me just get a mr clean eraser and she's all pretty again. She has gotten one smudge on her face, as much as I spazzed, it came off without any damage to the face up.

Like most everyone, if I'm taking pictures of her or it's before a meet, I will strip her down and make sure there isn't any dirt on her cause I don't want people thinking I'm a bad doll mommy.:oops

Sort of like finding a spot on my own clothes--it's annoying and I'd prefer to clean it... It's a bit embarrassing and annoying to find dust or dirt on my dolls. I don't clean them that often, though... every once in a while before spiffing them up for a meetup, I'll sponge-clean them if they need it. I've got some clothing/wig stains on them, which is a bother... they are hard to get off... I don't want the dirt to get ground in or anything, but don't want to scrub them down too much, either!

So I do mind a bit, but not excessively... *_*

Normally I tend to not do anything until the point where it becomes visible, though I rarely take Miranda outside and I always make sure my hands are clean before I handle her too extensively (but not to the point of washing my hands right before I play with her, every time. I have a big enough problem with super-dry hands as it is! One year it even got to the point where they would bleed...:o). But even then, I try to give her a good washing every four months or so and I always wipe away any stains, etc. as they appear. And for a photo session I would make sure she looked clean and neat beforehand--I'd hate it if any stains or stray cat hairs wound up in the photos! :mad

(Gee, now that I've typed it up, I realise that I might sound like much more of neat freak when it comes to my dolls than I actually am. :sweat)

It's funny though; I just got my Ryu head this weekend, and ever since I opened him I've been extra careful about handling, even doing the washing beforehand thing. That will probably change once he has a faceup and has been properly coated.

But if I'm buying a doll from someone? And it's dirty when it arrives? You better believe I would pissed. Serious stains I can understand (if I was told upfront about it by the seller of course) but it's very easy to give a BJD a good thorough cleaning before you send them away. Whitebread, I'd hate to have to go through what you did. :wahwah

I am a little OCD about checking mine over for spots or dust. She's my sewing model, so a little dirt is bound to happen just from stray fabric lint and things, and she's white skin as well, but I usually don't like leaving her if I know there's a mark. But, with the magic eraser it's really easy to clean up any spots. :oops And I do try to give her a magic eraser sponge bath every week or so, but I've only done the full scale bathing once in the six months I've had her.

The clothes are not really a problem, but can be a little hard to clean and press.

I'd probably be more easy going about other people's dolls. I don't mind a little dust and whatnot as long as it's not me that's responsible for making sure something's neat. :mad

The dolls that get played the most get the most baths. My biggest doll, also white skinned gets a weekly bath, and his MSC body coating changed every 2 months... He's one dirty boy... My Bambicronys don't get bathed as much even though they get played a lot because I don't like restringing them as much, and one has some delicate body blushing.

Generally I don't mind a bit of dirt; the worst most of my folks tend to get is clothing stains, and those are usually easy to get rid of. (Hurrah for Mr. Clean sponges!) I'll wipe off any stains, spots or smudges as soon as I see them, but I tend to play with them with clean hands, and they don't go outside much.

The one thing that really really bothers me (and yet, I seem unable to avoid despite silicone caps and the like) are wig stains... By their very nature, these stains aren't normally visible, but every time I see one, I get depressed... T_T

I don't mind a little, easily-managed dirt on anything but their faces - my dolls' hands in particular get really grubby quickly, because 1) they're blushed and 2) I'm constantly using their hands to test jewelry. Stains or damage to their faces would really upset me, though.

I do wish I hadn't fully coated & blushed my Hound - he always wears clothes, but when I'm changing him he just looks grimy. I really need to devote him to a full spa day, scrub off all the coating, take out his pliver sueding and re-do him with hotglue, etc. Boo, chores! Heh.

My dolls get dirty from playing and modelling, from outdoor photos, because we have a cat, and a static-y house with wood floors. ; ) As well, some of them are 6 years old and yeah, parts are slightly yellowed. Obviously I don't want my dolls to look grimy in person, and I certainly don't want their clothes dirty so I clean them up before meets and taking pictures. Aside from chipping off a huge piece of their face or some appendages there's nothing I could do to them that wouldn't be fixable, so I don't stress it too much.

I'm not going to lie, it depends on the doll. like, I'll get a little upset if my Locutus' face-up gets scratched, but I'll cry if Versailles' face does. I can easily re-do Loki... I did it before, I can do it again, etc, but Versailles has a default face-up from Volks which is very nice. x__x; Glycerine is right in the middle. I didn't do hers, but she's getting it redone soon anyway.

as for dirt, whatever. it'll come off. xD it's the faces I'm slightly worried about.

That's almost word for word what I was going to say :) There's no such thing as "clean" in Colorado, at least not for any length of time. (Why everyone puts beige carpets in their homes is ... a mystery to me!).

So given that life=dust in our house, and that I have 2 cats and two kids, I just give resinkids a bath every so often. For awhile there I was beginning to think I should be buying stock in Magic Eraser, but we've gotten better at not disgustifying our resin people quite so quickly! :)

I don't mind if I get them dirty. It's just unavoidable if you play with your dolls especially with a BW doll.

But it does make me a bit peeved if someone miss handles a doll with dirty hands. I always ask before touching other peoples dolls.

I like to keep them clean so I don't often "play" with them per se. I just dress them up & pose them for pictures on occasion or set them up in a way I want them "hanging out" in their space in my computer room, like a 3d picture I guess (though I hate knick-knacks in general that just gather dust so they aren't always out).

Anyway, I also always make sure my hands are clean and try not to man-handle them, so I keep them pretty clean.

Right now they are all packed away while we're doing some renovating.

I guess it varies from doll to doll with me too.
My Sha is always heavily coated with sealants because he has blushing//body-markings so when he gets dirty it's really noticable and kind of takes away from his decorations, which is annoying, so I do try and keep him clean-ish. Where as with my original Dolkot boy, because his body is such a bad design, the more dirt that gets into his joints, the better he stands :S which is kinda weird, but it suites his character, I guess. My Peakswood girl however, well, she can't actually be taken apart to be cleaned. So we just live with the dirt. Girls with dirty knee's are cute anyhow though.

It drives me crazy when they get dirty. I don't like shiny spots from us touching the resin either, so I try not to touch them as much as I can. I mean, I play with them, but I don't touch their face/try not to touch their exposed arms or legs when I do. As careful as I am, their hands still get shiny though, so it can't be helped.

Agreeing with whitebread, I'd freak out too if I buy a pre-owned doll and it arrives dirty. It doesn't bother me if other people play with their dolls and get them dirty, it's just mine I'm all OCD about XD;

A doll I got from DOA Marketplace came dirty. However, I was relieved to get him period; so I did not mind too much. (The previous owner had a lot of market place problems. I did not find the negative thread until after I paid, so I was really worried that I got scammed. So the fact that the doll did arrived was already good enough for me.)

For all of my dolls, I play with them a lot. But I try my best to keep them clean and wipe the body down whenever I see stains from their outfits (Volks was not kidding when they said that the outfits may stain :o)

Mine always seem to be dirty as I play/handle them a lot. Yes, I do get annoyed if I go to a meetup and find I forgot to wipe them clean or if a spot shows up in a pic that I hadn't noticed before, but I don't try to keep them pristine. After all, part of the enjoyment of these dolls is being able to play with them and often.

Phew! When mine get ugly, its quite bothersome. Mainly because dirt = ugly = haven't touched them in a while to notice that they are dirty = I've been bad.

And I like to be good, especially with these uber-expensive Super Dollar Fees of mine.

It depends which doll it is. I have some dolls which I'm very precious about and I wouldn't like it if they became dirty, but there are others which I handle every day and I suppose I expect them to need cleaning every so often. There's one who I handle a lot and it even seems to have a worn appearance. I've noticed that mostly among the ones I don't pick up all that often, the resin feels stiffer.

i mind dirtiness and deterioration in general. i think it's just my general obsession with neatness which translates to my dolls as well. i like them to be clean and neat and almost like new in appearance. i don't really handle them very carefully, eg. i am quite impatient and rough when i dress them but it's important that they don't get dirt or dust on them.

When mine get some dirt on them I do use the magic eraser, I don't want to scrub too hard since I don't want to damage the makeup on their faces, if they get dirt anywhere else then I give them a good scrubbing.

Ohhh, dirty doll is my pet peeve! D: It's more of an OCD thing. Anything that's really dirty around here gets a scrubbing. xDD I probably don't bathe my dolls as often as I should, but it doesn't bother me until they get VISIBLY dirty. i admit this is one of my pet peeves for my doll. if i notice she is dirty then i will rub at it with a damp cloth for as long as it takes. one time while i was fitting her for an outift i was making, i noticed that she had acquired a large smudge on her bum. i was crazy until i got most of it off.

I don't mind if my dolls get dirty. Like others have said, I think that just shows that they're loved. ^_^ I'll just give them a little wipe-off with the Magic Eraser. I re-do my dolls' faceups once every few months or so anyway (as I get a little better with each time I practice), so even on the face it doesn't bother me too much... just means it's time for a new faceup! ^_^

I don't mind it if they get dirty. I mean, I hate to see them dirty... I mean, like a stain, or something really visible. I had a person give my doll a body blushing, and the sealer was all sticky, so that was of course not acceptable. But people say I have really dirty dolls... I don't notice it that much. I don't think mine are THAT dirty, but I guess compared to others they are.

I was quite surprised recently when I was re-dressing some of my girls. They were quite dirty! So I gave them the quick once over with a damp magic eraser.

I did have DM Momo at the beach on our trip to Hawaii last year. Took lots of pics of him in sand holes, in the ocean etc. So he really needed to be submerged to get the sand out of his joints. He ended up fine!

I have two dolls, one of which I "play" with more than the other. He has a few marks, but nothing major. I think if I got dirt on my dolls I would worry about the long-term effects on the resin, so I would clean it off, and I would definitely have to clean his body if I got something in his joints.

A friend of mine is pretty much a clean freak with her dolls. She got SO mad at me when I told her they didn't have shoes or socks. xD I don't like shoes, especially not on BJDs, so I guess my dolls may have dirty feet once I start doing outdoors shots with them.

And I really freak out if it looks like something on their face has gotten dirty. There's been this really weird, faint mark on my Kirill's face for a while now that I've slowly been trying to clean, I'm just afraid of cleaning off something important on his face-up.

I'm scared to play with my dolls to the point where they get dirty. I like to undress them and re-dress them, pose them for pictures or vignettes, or run my fingers through their hair. But that's about it. No sunlight exposure, unless they are coved with a sheet/scarf, no playing in the dirt or on the ground, and no water submerging, only sponge baths. I try to be as careful as possible even if it means I might not be able to "truly" play with them on the preservation of childhood level.

My dolls usually accumulate dirt from being handled; I don't take them out much and most of the time they sit in their cabinet. But I hate noticing grime built up on them, ewww... Every so often I take the doll apart, scrub it with a sponge and baking soda, let dry, and put back together.

I also regret blushing one of my dolls a little because when the blushing starts scraping off and dirt gets in there it looks awful.

So far, I'm still pretty confused by people who panic over their dolls getting dirty, or other people touching their dolls at all out of fear of dirt. I've only had one doll borrowed for a little while, and while I am very careful with her, probably moreso than I would be with my own doll, I don't wash my hands every time I handle her.

The borrowed doll, Proto-Elphaba as I've nicknamed her for her green skin and lack of faceup, has been my sewing-model and thus has had a lot of different fabrics come on and off of her. So far, she hasn't gotten dirty at all from what I've been able to see, with the exception of an inexplicable black spot on her butt that was there when I got her... which I plan to try to clean off with a Magic Eraser before I send her home. At this point, I have to ask myself, "Just how filthy are people's hands when they pick up these dolls to get them dirty all the time?"

I, personally, dont mind if they get dirty or not. Ironically, last night, we went to a halloween party and I put Nao next to a cake...and my friend kept making comments on how she was going to push him into it.

I dunked his hand into the cake, of course, to show that I didn't care. And it really doesn't bother me. >>;; Sure, if there's a black scuff or something on his face, neck or chest I'll get it off...hands and feet I also clean when I notice that they're dirty. Otherwise, it doesn't matter. They're loved and they show it.

I do clean them before meets, though. Just like you said, people look at you like you dont take care of them.

I live on a farm and no matter where you are, inside or outside the house, somehow, dirt prevails. I'd have to keep Sakiyo in an airtight case and never take her out to keep her from getting dirty. I try to keep her clean before meets, though, at the very least.

As far as being bothered by it? Not really. So long as she's not covered in dirt from head to toe, a smudge or two from our latest excursion doesn't really bug me.

I guess I'm pretty nit-picky, but yes, I do mind >.>

Mostly this is because of the nature of my guys. Prince, who is made of white french resin, only wears white clothing so when he gets dirty, or his clothes do it is very, very obvious. I also don't like taking Fakia out too much as he's been dyed a light gray so I get very paranoid about cleaning him too much and risking rubby away some of his coloring, which also makes it difficult to care for his face-up and it's not 'easily' replacable as it might be for others.

My others boy ( and others in the future), might or might not need such delicate care as them, but I really don't think that matters. I just happen to get annoyed by messiness and being dirty in general.

Dirt that comes off easily doesn't bother me. Although I do worry about when a doll's face gets dirty. I can't do face ups, so if it ends up getting ruined, I gotta find an available artist.

I am miffed, however, that a doll I bought second hand at one time had black nail polish on his fingernails. I can't for the life of me remove all of it. I've tried a magic eraser and I've tried 90% alcohol, and it's still there. :angry

I try to keep them looking clean and presentable, but a little dirt here or there doesn't bother me (unless they need to be clean for a photoshoot or something--even then it doesn't matter unless it's huge). I rather enjoy the feeling of cleaning them up after they've gotten dirty/dusty.

Due to having a busy life for a few months, Edmond had been mostly sitting on a shelf for that time--when things calmed down, I took him apart and cleaned him off and it felt great seeing that layer of dirt come off, making him look all fresh and new again! Hahaha

As long as my dollies don't get stained, and their clothes don't get really dirty (as someone else said, I think it's hard to clean and iron little shirts haha... especially cause I swear our washer/dryer eats small clothes) I'm fine. ^_^

I've learned to be philosophical about stains from jeans, etc. They come off. Yeah, the face is the important spot to keep clean. I wish there had been more repeating warnings about MSC wearing off on chins if you keep touching them there to change head positions. But that too is fixable.

It's one doll, however, who mystifies me. He runs around in shorts, and I'm forever finding brownish stains on the backs of his thighs. I clean him, and weeks later, again. It almost makes me think he's got quite an active life while I'm at work!

I also make sure to wash my hands before handling them and I don't leave their clothes or wigs n for more than a day or two at most to prevent staining.

That's my feeling as well. They're not water soluble or resistant to soap and I've discovered that dolls are a GOOD deal sturdier than some worrywarts would lead you to believe.

I don't mind if they get dirty. Washing up is pretty easy and painless.

Except for Moswen and Jaiseki.

They both have body-ups. That is to say that they have body blushing as well as full body painting. I've discovered that MSC (their entire bodies are sprayed) is the ultimate dirt magnet. *sigh* But, cleaning them is a nerve wracking thing as I have zero painting skills and sent them out to be done and I'd be crushed if in my cleaning I "cleaned" their blushing and painting off.

And no matter how careful you are, it still comes off. x_x I put two layers of matte gloss on Token's blushing after Rishi managed to wear it off the first time, and it's still wearing off! *grumble*

XP That's gonna be unfortunate when I get Tremis then, because he's going to have some rather.... important blushing and painting, on his whole body. >< Crud. Good thing I plan on doing him MYSELF. If it wears off I can redo it, rather than keep sending him out to be fixed.

I have the BJD's because I like to play with them. I have plans to get them out even more this spring and summer. The day I received my cheshire cat he was actually out rolling in the dirt in the barn yard!! He cleaned right up!!

Right now, yes, but that's because I've never actually tried to take one apart. I'm a big chicken about that since I don't really have anyone around me to help me restring them if I get into trouble :) I believe I understand "how" to do it but I still want someone with me when I try it.

:D I was like that until my Megi got so floppy he wouldn't do anything! So in total frustration one day I roared "THAT'S IT! I'VE HAD IT!" And proceeded to take him apart :p

And we shan't recall my putting the thighs of the EID on the wrong sides when I restrung him... hehehehehehe

Swear to God, that's all I use even on my EID.

XD I restrung Liina, my RS/BBB An, with a length of ribbon and an ink pen. XD I don't have crochet hooks, or 'cheap' chopsticks. >> I would not use my nice black lacquered ones with the silver and black dragonflies to restring. I'd be more concerned about chipping my chopsticks! XD

It wasn't that hard. I was fusking with his feet, the S-hooks weren't fitting right, and when I lost one of the loops I ended up having to restring half of him entirely anyhow. "Oops! Well...... Poop. Oh well."

Depends on how dirty we're talking about. Pretty much everything attacts some level of dirt, but as long as it's easy to clean it's no problem. I wouldn't want to keep them sitting amoung piles of dust-covered clutter though.

I'd have to say that it depends on the amount of dirt, type of marks, and where it's at. If it's an easy to clean spot or easily hidden then I can wait till I can get to my cleaning tools, but if its on the face I freak because I'm not able to do face-ups or pay for a new one right now. I think I can understand the worry about soom dolls. They're expensive, even more so that other dolls, plus I've heard the painting chips quite easily so I can sympathize with people when they don't want their doll to be touched in certain spots like the face. Overall, a little dirt isn't something to be too worried about. Just clean it a bit later, at least that is what I do. Generally, I like my girls to be clean.

Minor dirt no problem - just destring, wash gently with washing up liquid and warm water, rinse, dry thoroughly, restring.

Major dirt is a problem though...

yes and no. i worry that if i leave the clothing stains on them, it will be permanent. i really hate face dirt...it bugs me because i worry i'm going to have to clean it off and then their face-up will come off too.

Dirt doesnt bother me particularly per-se, so long as its clean-off-able. Although its not really as if my dolls get a chance to get dirty anymore *is bad and has not been giving them much attention* but faceup dirt would bother me, because, well, generally that means a new faceup :(

Luxuria

I tend to agree with majikatt in that body dirt doesn't worry me as much as faceup dirt. You can always use a magic eraser on body dirt. :)

I try to never ever touch the faces and try my best to keep them clean. The bodies I'm less concerned about, since it's no big deal to clean them. I don't deliberately let them get dirty (though I might choose to for photos at some point) but I'm not paranoid about it either. I keep a chunk of magic eraser in the carrier (and one in Finn's head, usually) to take care of anything I spot while out and about. Crow needs a full wipedown/scrub right now, though! I'm not sure how he got so dirty when his clothes are light colored and always on.

As long as the face is clean enough, I don't mind dirt. Not that I'm going to be throwing them in mud or anything. I like them relatively clean, but I won't freak out if they're not pristine, which is impossible anyway!

Normally, I'm an AWFUL slob. But when it comes to Judas I go a little OCD on cleaning. One little spot and out comes the soap and q-tips. I live in a very old house, so he gets dirty just SITTING THERE! I guess it's a protection of my investment thing. I've only had him for three weeks, so we'll see if things calm down after a while ^_^

I do mind if my bjd gets dirty. I like to keep him as clean as possible. I know that just everyday interaction with him will cause him to get dirty. He may eventually scuff or scrape, he will get worn. I am okay with that, but when there is more than just normal wear and tear, I wash him with warm water only, mild soap if needed, and magic eraser on his body, not his face, if he really needs it.

What I've noticed, though, is that he seems to get easily 'dyed' by clothing with strong blue tones. Blues, blacks and purples seem to set into his resin. I'm not sure why this should be. He is a newer Luts Type 3. I then do use magic eraser.

i understand that getting dirty happens to the best of us.
but it still doesnt make me freak out any less. i think the worse was when my boy's knees got stained from black pants. not necessarily dirt but enough to give me a panic attack and scrub for an hour at it. D:

I don't really take them out much so they tend to stay pretty clean. But sometimes the clothes they wear will cause a stain, but it's usually covered.

I've done a mass cleaning session with my dolls before in which I take them all apart, magic eraser the stains or sand them if the marks are stubborn and then put them back together after spraying a new coat of MSC. But this takes awhile so I've only done it like twice.

If it's a really obvious stain on the hands? I'd clean it. I wouldn't be freaked or anything. If it was on the face though? Then I'd freak...majorly. :oops

Not overly, I mean I just did a full cleaning of my boy.. but that's after a couple months of owning him and needing to redo his body blushing because he was beginning to chip/rub away.

I will spot clean though when I notice, or when I remember I'd seen dirt/stains somewhere. I don't freak.. just dampen a cloth and scrub, if it doesn't work I'll use the magic eraser. The only thing I kinda gone "WTF" at is when Lesley's nose somehow turned green o.o I didn't have magic eraser on me either.. and was a night before a big meet up.

I dragged him into public pathroom wet a towel and some handsoap and scrubbed at it for a minute or two. It came off.. and didn't seem to chip away at the MSC either.

I try to wipe my displayed dolls down every couple of days because they love to attract dust. I don't mind certain dolls (the non-limited) going outside, but I will wipe them down if they get dirty. I am always afraid of them getting broken (I ride the Tokyo trains), so I don't take them out often even though there are many lovely statues and shrines that I would love to take pictures with.

Hi! New person to this forum, happy to be here!

Honestly, I'm really crazy attentive to my dolls and have a Magic Eraser backed in the travel pack with me, just in case they get something on them. If it's a smudge of dust or dirt, I will probably at least try to wipe it off with my shirt or a tissue.

I'm a clean freak, so yea, I like my dolls as clean as possible, I hardly take them out because of that. I don't clean them on a daily basis tho, just once every 3-4 months. It's not like they can become filthy just by sitting in their cabinet. Most of the problems come from clothes staining.

I think at first, I'd go on a rampage. only because i like to keep my stuff very clean and long lasting. I try to keep wear and tear to a minimal and even more so on an expensive doll. i'd still wanna have fun with my doll so maybe i'll let loose as time goes on.

I found myself rather upset when my girls got dirty after going to a meet. I wasn't really concerned with dirt while I was at the meet, but when I got home I saw dark dirty smudges on their hands and such which they had been using to prop themselves up for photos. Being a newer owner I find it does bother me but I'm beginning to realize there's no way to avoid it because I do play with my dolls. It also bothers me because my dolls have body blushing so it's trickier to clean them.

I actually bought industrial jewelry gloves to handle my first bjd...! I'm scared to touch her because if I get body oils on her, it might speed up her yellowing. However, if I don't use the gloves, I will just wash my hands really good first. I like to keep my precious items looking good for as long as possible!:heart

I don't mind their bodies getting dirty unless I've blushed them. Faceups I freakout if it gets dirty. I don't go to extremes about it though :v in my opinion that's kind of silly. These dolls are pretty darn durable.

...in fact, right now, my dolls are covered in dust. It's a bit hard to get out of the wigs but pretty easy for clothes/bodies/faces

My BJD get dusty, but not dirty. I just dropped off a kimono at the dry cleaners because there was an orange juice stain, so I guess I would be very bothered if my dolls were actually dirty.

What LaLune said about wear & tear; yes I too like to keep it to a minimum, & I've found over the years that cleaning something too frequently can actually help accelerate the degradation process, so I *try* to employ a balance of neglect, careful handling, keeping them in a cool dark room, dusting occasionally and cleaning every once in a while. Having said this, my oldest doll Anuk is usually a bit grubby, and thoroughly well-loved. Poor darling! I've done so much of my bjd learning through her :)

I don't mind the dirt or shininess but I'm really careful about the face-up or messing up the eyelashes. My doll is well played with, too. However, when I see a mark on my doll I'm pretty quick to wipe it off because when your work, school, and play share the same environment, you don't know if that mark is "crayola" or "sharpie." :p
