Hi guys, I am new to the forum and I will recieve my 1st doll soon. I want to create some outfits but I can't narrow down some ideas on what to make. So far I have started on the following sketch ideas:
Pirates
Cowgirl
Military uniform
Regency dress
Roman dress
Belly dancer
Saloon girl
Indian
Matador ( I think thats how to spell it)
Flapper
Equestrian
Now I need help so could someone suggest any more?...

Well, it depends. What is your skill level currently at? Do you know measurements of your doll? Is there any material you have on hand that would be great for a particular outfit? You should think about these while you decide.

I Guess I Would Say That I'm At Intermediate Skill And I Haven't Recieved My Doll Yet But I Have A Few Measurements. I Was Trying To Get Everything Together While I'm Waiting. I Have Quite Alot Of Material From Sewing For My Other Dolls. I Am Trying To Figure Out A Style For The New Doll While Throwing In Some Costumes In The Mix. I Have A Basic Harin Which Will Be My First Bjd Doll.

A lot will depend on the character of your doll, partly what you have in mind and partly what the doll decides.
For example, there is no point making a cowboy outfit if the doll doesn't want to be a cowboy. ;)
I'd stay with the sketches until you have the doll in hand and then you'll know what would suit best.

I just purchased the JD (Johnny Depp) head in the secondary market, and want to make him the pirate. So if you come up with a pirate costume similar to what was worn in Pirates of the Caribbean, I would love to see that.

more ideas...
Fairy
Princess
Street Urchin
Gothic
Edwardian, Victorian
And a suggestion - unless you are good at drafting patterns, it might help to start with some BJD patterns and modify them to fit your costume ideas.
A list that includes links to some free patterns:

Some commercial patterns that include mini/MSD patterns:
Patchwork Pansy:

Example - these minifee patterns look a lot like a saloon girl, a pirate, and gypsy in various photos:

Gracefaerie:

In addition, there are patterns for Unoa and Volks MSD in various Japanese magazines, and for Volks is several publications specifically for Volks dolls.
One index to BJD patterns:

And if you have a very slim mature girl, you could also mod some Elowyne Wilde patterns to work (make sure the waist and sleeves are wide enough, etc).

The Johnny Depp head - mini or SD? Just wondering because there is a 12-inch Johnny Depp Pirates action figure with cloth clothes and some of the pieces (jacket, vest and accessories) fit very slim minis.

You and me both. I love the alien outfits from the original Star Trek.

Hakama and mens kimono are easy to make when you only have a few measurements. Kendo equipment is on my own list. =)

How about different countries' folk costumes? I know that many Eastern Europe have very interesting costumes.

oooh patterns. :D
I'd seen people take stuffed animals about the right size and cut the faces out to make bear suits for their dolls. It was cute. This girl had it posted on Den of Angels. So maybe animal costumes could be cute.

I'm saving right now for my first doll who is based on a character I've had for a long time. She doesn't like drawing attention to herself and usually wears pretty normal, non-attraction getting clothing, which can be boring for me. Luckily her partner in crime (a trickster god who I'm not even thinking about buying until after I get my first doll) likes to dress her up in flattering, elaborate outfits that often reference to historic and cultural clothing from all over the world.
Right now I'm just learning to sew, but eventually I do want to make her a sari.

If you really must get sewing before the doll arrives, and you have the basic measurements, a simple nightshirt / nightie and a shed load of kacks (underpants / panties) would not go amiss. Seriously, panties soon add up at $4 or $5 a pop.
(anyone wanna make me nice panties and stuff for a BBB 1/4 girl Mei feel free to quote me some prices)
Phil.
