Have you wondered where the headmold names come from, for limited and standard edition dolls? ...Or if you already know, do you feel like enlightening us? ;)
I know I've wondered particularly with those names that show up from one company to another, like "Harang."
Yesterday I was at Starbucks waiting for a couple of drinks and browsing the music they leave hanging around in the endcaps, and I found a Joni Mitchell album called "Shine" that featured two singles, "Shine" and "If." Of course, that made me think of Cerberus Project's Shine (http://www.eluts.com/frontstore/Item/item_zoom.asp?item_num=2977&catalog_num=9&mart_id=lutsdoll&level=&mother_catalog_num=121) and If (http://www.eluts.com/frontstore/Item/item_zoom.asp?item_num=2978&catalog_num=11&mart_id=lutsdoll&level=&mother_catalog_num=121)... that really made me wonder if it was coincidence, or if it might possibly be the inspiration for their names!
So, what about you? Have you wondered where those headmold names come from? Or do you already know? Speculate here!

Sometimes I think they pull them out of a big 'sorting hat' of some kind! *laughs* I like how Iplehouse does seem to think about the name and give translations for them.
I wonder if baby names books are considered sometimes.
I only know it is sometimes confusing when two completely different companies have dolls with the same name! That's when I wonder if the name is really popular in the country for some reason or if the name is being used to draw in customers because another company's sculpt may be popular.
You know I have wondered about this for a long time. Sometimes the names could mean something in a certain language and other times it just completely blows my mind as to where they came up with them. I have always wondered if the creators go out sometimes, get drunk, and just blurt out "hey, we should name our new doll after this drink!" or something like that..... or it could be the cold medicine making me type this too
I want to know why they named that tiny doll "Chubby" *_*
Two words: Huey Lewis.
Best. Doll. Name. EVER.
Koi - I want to know why they named that tiny doll "Chubby"
I took my new one, who has no clothes yet, over to my friends' house last night to show them the faceup, and the first thing they noticed was the reason they call him Chubby. o0
So much for his *horns* being the interesting bits.

I wondered if the person that named Dollzones Mo was a three stooges fan. ;)

I've thought about this on a number of occasions. XD I have no idea where they get their names but I'd like to know.

I think they draw references from all over depending on how they want to style the doll.
For example, when i look at the Dollmore Model dolls, i see some famous real-life model name references: "Eva" Herzigova / Anja "Rubik" / "Kyle" Carlson / "Owen" Steuart.
And for the Luts Senior Delfs, they seem to come from mythological backgrounds. Like El, Dion, Abadon and Bliss. Abadon being hell and Bliss being, well, heaven, i suppose. Just like how their molds are opposite of each other (Abadon with the masculine face and Bliss with the feminine features).
Well, thats what i think anyway :)
As for Abio Angel dolls, they're all named after numbers in Mandarin.

I've seen that album and never even made the connection! If I recall correctly, Luts released Shine and If at the same time--which continues to make it more than coincidence as far as I'm concerned. ;)
Two words: Huey Lewis.
Happydoll has a Huey (small doll) and a Louis (large doll), but I don't think they were released at the same time, and the spelling is different between Lewis/Louis. I'm probably grasping at straws now since a lot of the other Happydolls have similar non-Asian names (Dorothy, Arthur, etc.). :P

I've always wondered about that myself. I especially wonder about Dollzone Recall . . . they should be a bit more cautious about naming. >_>;;

I had heard a while ago that Juri was a Koreanization of the word Yule, which has to do with Christmas...dunno if it's true or not, since the word Juri is sooooo far from the sound of Yule to me!
wasn't there one company that had a naming contest for a new boy? whatever happened with that?
There was a contest for Elfdoll Special K, but I don't believe anyone actually won.

Well, I think the one that was winning before it was shut down was cheating to get their votes (or so I heard).
I think some of the finalists were Cole, Jett, Keiran, Ares... I can't remember the other two.

I think they did it so I could make childish puns. Mine's a girl, which makes it just that much worse.

Soom did, for Kanoa. Two of the runner-up names have been given to their latest offerings, (Laon and Nion).

I like how the Customhouse Petite Ai are named after angels and the Little Junior Ai are named after gods. I haven't worked out what the common factor is with the Junior Ai and The Ai though.

Heh - -I got to name the Dollzone LE Elves. ;) I named them after two dear characters of mine, lol - but also because their names have certain significance -- and overall, a strong character. ^_~

I wonder if some of the asian-sounding names we pick for some of our dolls are as odd to people in the countries they come from as some as some of the 'western' names are to us in english speaking countries...

Bobobie allows their customers to name their dolls as well. Eric, erin, chocolate and a few others were named by people on Doa. :D

I like how most of the names aren't common at all though =D. Like DOD.. "Petsha", "Ducan", "Kirill". I think it's refreshing!
Wouldn't they usually be the artists own characters names? Because the dolls usually have a backstory already, right?
Ah.. it'll be cool to find out =D

I would guess that the sculptor probably picks whatever they fancy to name the project.
Makes me wonder, though, with all the little stories Volks writes (and the other companies, too) if they write the story then sculpt the head to fit it, or the other way around?

I have often wondered where they got the names..like my Unidoll Ark...where did they come up with that...and Luts' MNFs Shushu..some are bizarre..but maye they mean something in Korean?

Not entirely sure, but I have a strong hunch that "Shushu" means butterfly... Could anyone who knows Korean confirm that?

It is so much fun reading this XD
I never really thought about it, but now I do and wonder...
I found it funny someone once said to me: Cecile is a girl right?
I said no, he is a boy! She said: but it is a girls name!
And well, she is right, Cecile is *here anyways* used more as a girls name than a boys name. So why did they call him that? Some names are really strange and now I wonder where they got them from. Indeed like chubby, such a cute name but why? XD

^Actually,Cecile's name means 'blind' which is kind of funny because it totally fits the Scarface but it does't fit the first release of Cecile at all..which indeed makes me wonder if they already had the idea for a pirate, or that they just called their froufrou boy Cecile, then looked up the name for ideas for the rerelease and then came with the idea of a pirate who lost one eye..

That's a very good point. I think that many of the asian countries like the sound of certain English words and, without necessarily knowing what they mean, uses them. I bet the same goes for names.

I love the names DoD gives their dolls! It's kind of fun hearing the different names the companies give their dolls. They've actually become ideas for naming my own things. I've named a character on Warcraft Juri, for instance. I'd love to know if some of the more eastern-sounding names have an interesting meaning.

I believe that the Bluefairy Xiao shares a name with a faceup artist that they work very closely with~

Harang was the name of ancient Korean warriors. (Just saw it mentioned in a TV show)

I was rather disappointed when I heard about the Chubby. When I looked him up he wasnt chubby at all :(. It would be so funny to see a chubby figured little boy or girl, although finding clothes would be a nightmare.

Ah, I've been reading through this post and I'm just curious, but who's Chubby?
Anyways, back on topic. I've always been a little curious too. Though, I doubt I'll even find the answers. I always rename the dolls I receive. Well, personal reasons for why I changed my first boy's name.

I thought it was hilarious (And MAYBE coincidental) that Dollmore's Kyle Reese has the same name as the father from the original Terminator Movie. (Well, in the end he's the father... anyway)
My Boyfriend's name is Reise, and he was named FOR that Terminator Character, so almost named Kyle. I'm thinking of Getting a Kyle Reese just to represent him.

Interesting thoughts on Abadon. Makes me want to search for more info.
