Which doll company has the best Engrish?

All right... enough of the serious discussions about gender perceptions in the doll hobby and the like. Time for something stupid. :p

Which doll company has the "best" Engrish on its site? I'll leave it up to the individual to decide what makes one company's Engrish the best.

NOTE: This is not intended as a meanspirited or spiteful post. Every single one of these companies that provides a page for English-speaking users does a fantastic job of supporting a market that they don't really need. They're doing us a major favor by having an international presence, and I appreciate it greatly. But I find the mutations caused by the language barrier to be both entertaining and charming. I can't help but wallow in it a bit. :doh

With that disclaimer out of the way, I've got to give major credit to Iplehouse. Whenever they post a new doll, I race past all the pictures so I can see what biographical information they've included. My favorite has got to be from the Lion Full Set Limited ver.1:
"As a type of person who is only one in the world, his haughtiness attains the highest perfection, but sometimes, he does something extraordinary, so makes surroundings surprised." (italics added by me for emphasis)

I have to admit that I sometimes wince or have a quiet giggle at the english translations. I Know that they are doing their best but sometimes the wording is just a little much. :)

I have done a little rewording for Dollzone on some of their announcements and descriptions before they release to improve the english a little bit.

I remember one incident where they were trying to say that a sword wasn't included with the doll. Unfortunately, the word they were using was Dong..... I pointed out to them that they might want to change it as it meant something quite different in Aussie slang. ;)

I've always liked the little bios that DoD provided for it's first dolls. They are so sweet, yet so grammatically incorrect. Ex:

Man, I've seen so much awesome Engrish over the years that's made me laugh hysterically; I've forgotten much of the good stuff but there's been some real killers. :XD

My favourite recently was in the included items with the new standard Glory Doll releases, Louis (http://www.glorydoll.com/shop/step1.php?number=571) and Lily (http://www.glorydoll.com/shop/step1.php?number=572):

Included :
-basic Louis head and body
-urethane eyeball without the apple of the eye 17~18mm(Random color)
-general box for Glorydoll with 2 blankets

It took me aaaages before it finally occured to me that "eyeball without the apple of the eye" might mean eyes without pupils. :doh I spent a great deal of time wondering "but what if I want the apple of the eye? Maybe he likes apples!"

My most recent example was when I ordered from Soom and got a confirmation email with the headline "SOOM - We confirmded order which [my name] ordered."

I actually asked some friends of mine if that was good or bad. The best situations has to be where the Engrish is coming from both sides :sweat

I think people are just careless with their grammar. It's certainly not just netspeak-- it's all over the place, even in everyday life in America. I'll admit, it's a pet peeve of mine. I'm a grammar perfectionist as-is, mostly because my mother taught high school English for a time, but also because I'm a teacher. The mistakes people make with the apostrophe baffle and frustrate me. :o

Unfortunately, no...it's really just people using the wrong word. I've found that ESL speakers/writers often use English much more correctly than native speakers. For instance, my grammar will often prove how little a native English speaker knows about her own language. :doh

Um, yes. I can sympathize with this. I read police reports for a living. >.< We love our men in blue, but some of them REALLY need a redo in spelling and grammar. Eh...but I'm not perfect, either. When I'm tired, it can be brutal... :wahwah

As for real Engrish (Konglish?), my vote also goes to Mr. Press Papila Good Feel. Though something tells me I got a letter from Unidoll that was pretty bad once - I should check my e-mail for that. It's probably still in there.

I also find the misuse of you're/your very frustrating. My pet peeve is when people use "to" when they should be using "too". It really disrupts the flow of reading. That said I try not to be guilty of putting the apostrophe in the wrong spot but I noticed I had done it in my profile - lati's when I meant latis )

I haven't been in this hobby long enough to see much engrish but I will say I think it is charming that when Korean or Japanese is translated into English on some sites it really does seem so poetic. It makes me wonder if these languages are naturally more poetic and expressive if that is how they translate to English? The only example I can think of that makes me giggle is a Blythe example - when translated from English it is sometimes written "brassiere chair" :D

BuddyDoll had a nice example a month or two ago that was corrected pretty quickly. In the banner image on the front page, they were proudly proclaiming how "GOOG" their products were. :? Still, their "BuddyDoll is your best friend~~!" manages to capture that Engrish-y spirit quite well.

Well, in Japan they don't have a distinct "L" or "R" sound, and they are the same, so when words are translated into English sometimes they use R when they should be using L. Not sure if that is the same in the Korean language, however.

I think Dollmore wins for the best Engrish overall, or at least the best names for items.

On a recent visit to Hong Kong the cultural center had a HUGE 40' high (or larger) banner on the front of the building.

They had the words Chinese and English written on the banner in such a way it looked like it said Chinglish!! I will have to find the picture to post.

I'm not sure it was intentional on the part of the cultural center to have the sign read that way :D It was amusing non the less

Well, Dollmore gets my vote. I placed an order very late one night, realized I had made a big error, and immediately turned around and canceled it.

Not only did they confirm the cancellation, they exhibited a thoroughness that was impressive:

"The order which it receives was cancelled. The 'Cancel order' with lower part is same case. It pays, until about prearranged date does not become the payment not to be and the case which the manager cancels. Before the payment is confirmed, the customer direct cancellation one case."

This still makes me smile. Gotta love a company that goes out of its way to clarify.

Soom's Idealian campaign last year actually kind of disappointed me. I remember "the Bob" their campaign PR was going on about while hyping him. And I thought that would be a great name for a sculpt.

I mean, you can have a whole LINE of them! Bob, Jim, Bill, Jack, Scott, etc.

Unfortunately, no...it's really just people using the wrong word. I've found that ESL speakers/writers often use English much more correctly than native speakers. For instance, my grammar will often prove how little a native English speaker knows about her own language. :dohwhat you say is so true! But for some it not their fault. I did not start on how to learn to read and write intill i was 15. And i struggle with it too.

The company "Dollmansion" is not a doll company, really. But they sell acceccories for BJDs. I just read this on their site when looking at their dollsized watches:

Man, I've seen so much awesome Engrish over the years that's made me laugh hysterically; I've forgotten much of the good stuff but there's been some real killers. :XD

It took me aaaages before it finally occured to me that "eyeball without the apple of the eye" might mean eyes without pupils. :doh I spent a great deal of time wondering "but what if I want the apple of the eye? Maybe he likes apples!"

I love reading Engrish, though I sometimes have to read it several times to figure out what they are trying to say. Probably some of the words they don't know, look up in a language dictionary, and pick one from a list of translation words that doesn't really fit in the context. But it's so cute!!! And their Engrish is certainly better than my Japanese, and I can't even count to 10 in Korean! ;)

I think Crobidoll is my favorite... They have interesting word choices. I actually really enjoy reading announcements in Engrish!

If you think doll companies are fantastic with engrish, you should try looking up the fashion magazines in Korea. lol My daughter has an orange and black hoodie my mom bought her while in Korea that says " I <3 Mickey! Happy days are nadry! ". We can't come up with what nadry is supposed to mean.

My mother speaks engrish. Eye shopping = window shopping and it always gets a chuckle from me when she says that.
