I just got this idea while replying to another thread, cause I was thinking back on the days when I had ten-plus 60cm dolls taking over my bedroom.

When I first started this hobby and had just my first doll, she got lots of love and attention. I had all kinds of elaborate plans for more, and eventually got up to thirteen dolls, eleven of which were 60cm. I went through buying and selling a lot of dolls until I finally got my MNF Shushu and fell so in love that I wanted nothing but mature minis and decided bigger dolls just weren't for me. At first my intention was to have a new story with lots of mature minis, but then I realized that I just had too many dolls! *_*

Now I have two mature minis modeled after two of my favorite original D&D characters, and two tinies just for fun. I don't have plans to buy anymore dolls, and while there are so many molds out there that are just gorgeous, I try to remind myself how overwhelming they were to me. I'm happy with four, and I find it allows me to give more attention to my dolls without fussing over which ones as much. It also allows me to spend more money on clothes and extra-fancy eyes (I'm a bit of an eye snob).

I still see people with growing collections of way more than ten dolls. My best friend is over number twenty. It works for her, and I know she loves them all, and I know a lot of collectors are the same way.

So what about you? Is there too much of a good thing, or do you always want another doll? Are you happy having a small collection and feel you've found the right arrangement for yourself, or are more always welcome to join your resin family?

I have a large doll family--it wasn't meant to happen, it just did. The main reason my dolls are taking over the living room is that I've been buying bodies for story characters, and it's a large cast. I also like to balance out the population with some non-story characters or characters from other smaller story lines. I love all my dolls very much--greater numbers haven't changed that.

It's true that when I had fewer dolls, I could give each one more individual attention. However, by having a lot of dolls I can do more with them story wise, and can enjoy the character interaction. I also like the variety that exists in my group--I have a number of dolls from different companies and some hybrids, and it's fun to compare the different sculpts and how they pose. I don't feel too guilty about lack of individual time, because they have so many of their friends and family to hang out with. I also postion them around the living room so I can spend time with them by just being there with them.

I'm really happy with just the few I have planned. Riley is my first doll ever to have such a large wardrobe. I went through almost ten dolls before getting her, and almost all of them had two outfits at the most. Riley has over $400 worth of clothes just for her. I LOVE that. I love being able to spoil her. Now I have a 60cm male doll planned that I want to spoil as well, and a tiny for cuteness. Realistically, I can't afford to have a huge number of dolls and tons of clothes for each... I much prefer the idea of two that are brilliantly dressed and well paid attention to.

I do have other dolls planned, but they're mostly such hard-to-find molds that I'm not even actively looking to acquire them, at least not right now.

Originally I'd planned tons and tons of dolls, I'd see a new one I liked and come up with some sort of idea so I could eventually get them.
But between other things and just not having the money I realized it was a lot more fun to only have a few. Right now our plans are stopping at about 4-5. We have two tinies right now, with two sds and an msd planned and thats pretty much where we know to stop (We being my husband and I)
To me it just seems more fun to only have a few and be able to 'spoil' them, then have so many that half of them are naked because you can't afford to get so many things at once.

I dont find it dire to have "many" around- a lot of the reason amounts to my visual perception that BJD often oddly appear to look cheap when many are present in the one frame; all owned by the one person. Of course a lot of people would disagree, and its normal to expect that- because people naturally have differing opinions. Though i've found a separate way around it.

I would like to endeavor to collect my planned dolls within time and naturally would expect the collection to be rather moderate in my eyes- IF i do engage in the business side of BJD- because that aspect pulls in so many factors such as making clothes ... working with different sculpts- genders.. proportions.. resin surfaces. The fact that it adds to my knowledge in studying/researching them only helps that side of the BJD business world flourish.

Having said that, i would also be happy with a few; say- three +1
Not *all* of them need to be present in shells and sculpts- it is rather unnecessary and due to the extreme rarity (and even absence) of some of the molds i've been after, i've already dropped them from my list.

I do find that i like odd numbers more also that I never count Kuja as a BJD and i refer to my 'mini' as my " +1". I know its not any kind of denial or negligence...i've just never considered them as "dolls" to count towards the particular "collection" i'm gathering.

And some point i ended up with this chain of extra dolls.. and i realised long before..that if i could pick 1 doll- which would it be?- and if i could answer with that one doll- why bother getting others in the first place? ..

There must be something mind warping about the resin of dolls, cause I'm way off my mark of what I wanted to own. Originally, I wanted to have just three: my first doll (a DM Aiden), and my two guys (now a Sch A and F17). And that, to me, was really pushing it.

Somehow though I've ended up with five at home and one more possible permanent resident on the way! I've never wanted a huge crew, what I have really pushes my endurance in fact. But I can't seem to let anyone I have go, so. XD;

I could be so happy with a very few if I wasn't such a greedy individual.

It's such an addictive hobby! I don't think anyone ends up with what they planned for.

I'd originally claimed to be a one doll kinda gal, and I swore one was enough and I didn't think I'd ever want more. Annnd now I'm currently buying my second doll with plans for a third. Who knows after that! I still don't think I'll ever be the type to own a house-hold full, I can't imagine owning more than five. But I said that at one, so I won't make promises anymore haha;;;

I always want more dolls. :sweat That's why I had to put a cap on myself. If I didn't, I'd just keep buying and buying.

The majority of my dolls are based on characters from my favorite anime/mangas, and those series happen to have lots of characters, so if I didn't limit myself, I'd be drowning in dolls right now. XD

It does help that I generally have to have a plan for a doll before buying it. It has to be perfect for the character I want, and also a mold I like. There are tons of molds I like and would love to have, but without having a character in mind for it, I don't feel any real overwhelming desire to plunk down the money for them.

I started out saying I only wanted one, and I firmly meant that at the time... I can't say that I dislike having the tribe that I do, or that I should never have had anyone but Harumatsu and Tien Jen... but I do think there's such a thing as "too many" and that once you cross that line, you'll know it.

I have a few too many...

But once they're here and you're attached to all of them, it's well nigh impossible to trim the family. They're sort-of devious that way. :D

I am happy with a few, but having a lot more doesn't hurt me either. Sure, if my space is small, then a lot more dolls would be overwhelming. But when you have the money and the space to own all of them, then it doesnt seem to be that big of a problem. I only worry that my dolls will yellow or age before I've had enough time to truly enjoy them. Sometimes I do feely guilty when I don't play with them or even touch them for days, but I never feel unhappy because of them.

One of my main worries is that I may end up liking MSDs and end up buying them. Ive decided to just stay with SDs or SD13s, while also owning one YoSD. But every so often, I will see an MSD that is just too cute or cool, but I control myself from buying them....even if they are more affordable than the big dolls I own.

Right now I have 6 dolls because I have 2 differant stories going on..and I have 2 left on my list of dolls to buy before Im done forever.....I think I would like a smaller collection in a whole, though I cant stop in the middle of bringing home my story characters just because i'm 'done', really. One story has a cast of 3, the other has a cast of 5. I've already started, so finishing is what I shall do.

I have an entirely unwieldy number of dolls. And yes, I love them all, which is why I still have an unwieldy number of dolls! I sure wish I could figure out a way to trim the numbers down but... I can't. Oh well.

I do occasionally fret that I can't give them all sufficient attention, but only briefly and then my inner geek takes over and I'm browsing sales again ;)

My doll family (always large ^^; ) really got out of hand this summer, what with going to Dolpa and Volks re-releasing Masha, and some really wonderful dolls coming onto the secondary market. I think I was overcompensating for something. ^^;

I've sold a few and feel a lot better now - plus the survivors (as it were) are pretty much part of my central family. I still feel I have too many - but I'm very attached to the ones that remain.

If I had it all to do again, I think I'd have one. I feel sort of like Brightfires does, though. Once you have them, you become very attached.

I just have two, bought from my daughter, s2kitty, to help her out financially and give me an excuse to own 'em. I thought she did a fabulous job on Kiba, doing such fine details from the esthetics, clothes, and even making a tiny Akumaru plushie with magnets so he could rest on Kiba's head. Gabriel has such a sweet face and is so poseable and transportable. I wuv him. I would eventually like to get either a MSD or SD size girl and an SD size male.

The most I've ever had was seven, and the least was when it was only Kiele. My doll family is starting to grow again, but having had so many in the past I feel I have a better handle on what I really want this time.

Famous last words.

I have 15, plus 2 floating heads with plans of buying a body for one head and yet another floating head this weekend. I am trying to limit myself to 20 but with the characters I want to embody I'm probably going to be edging up on 30. *_*

When I started out two years ago my thought was only SD size and only about 6-10 dolls. Now I have two bambicronies, an Uyoo, a MSD with plans for another MSD and two 70cm's.

I do occasionally think that I should 'thin the herd' but I just can't do it. I look at each doll and think about it but I can't let any of them go. :kisses I'm just one of those people destined for a large collection I guess. :)

I only wanted one at first, and planned to change his faceup and style a lot, and after a year, mod his head. Instead, I'd ordered my second before he even arrived. *sigh* Now I have a lot more than I'd intended. I've just edited my collection a tiny bit - after bringing home my two ultimate never-thought-it-possible grail dolls this year, it's become very clear to me the difference between which ones are really important to me and which are just cute to have around. But it's hard to part with the latter few, too!

I do a lot of body swapping at this point. I can't resist heads, and don't want to have a *houseful* of dolls, so I swap, and I'm cool with it.

I'm totally blissed out with everyone I have now. I'll probably pick up a few more heads along the way, and don't have a rule against getting another body or two eventually, but my current crew's status makes me really happy.

My original plan was to only have a *few.* I ended up with a large collection. Granted there are people with 30, 40, 50+ dolls, having over 10 seems to be a big group. Right now I am mostly happy with the dolls I own.

The problem is that doll companies keep making pretty, new dolls. Dolls are like potato chips...

I knew going into this hobby that there'd be a "Pringles Effect" of a sorts. Just seeing other peoples' dolls at cons had me squealing at the idea of taking those molds home. I do try and decide before every doll purchase, just how badly do I want it. That, and I try and limit myself to one doll a year. I can go crazy with clothes and the like, but the dolls itself. Figure that way I can keep a bit of control over how big the brood gets. And I don't have to fear overwhelming myself with a sudden flood of resin parts. xD

I'm just shy of hitting the double digits with my dolls and I'm starting to realize my capacity to own more is growing smaller and smaller. I'd like to be able to focus more on getting everyone nice outfits and pretty eyes and wigs and all that stuff, instead of eternally saving up for the next one.

So I guess, I'm happy with my medium sized group.

Wellllll ... I didn't think I'd ever have one. Then I did. Then I thought, maybe just a couple. No more than a few because I wanted every single one to be special. And only minis, because they're a perfect, manageable size. Now I've got a very large and varied family and even though there are many, each one is completely necessary for the group to be complete.

I'm completely in love and hopelessly addicted.

I have 12 right now, with one planned (she was sold to come home in another 'form', but I haven't finished saving for her yet), and another waiting to be shipped. I *never* thought I'd get here, but at the same time I never thought about not getting here.

My 'family' went from four planned MSDs (the main characters in my story, which was only created because of the first BJD I bought! Grrr! lol), to four SDs (the MSDs weren't mature enough for the characters), and branching into a new size when I never thought I would allowed me to think about other sizes, and in came the tinies lol

I really, really love the diversity of sizes now that I have them, and would never change. I do sometimes really miss having a small group (in size as well as quantity) but I know what I'm like and I know I'd always find an excuse to buy a male SD, who then needs a gf, and then they might have Tinies for kids... lol

I know when a doll isn't right, and they go after I've given myself a fair chance to try and bond with them, so I know that the dolls I have are here to say. I do definitely miss the time I used to spend with my first doll, my elf Ttory girl, and how much attention she got, how I learnt to sew for her, how she went everywhere with me... Now, it's all changed, and I miss those days. BUT! I'd never go back, I love my lot so much, and even if I don't play with them as much as I did when I only had one, I can't help but smile every time I see them, and my heart swells that little bit ^^ *sappy*

Well this is the thing im going through at the moment, im trimming my collection back. I realised that fewer is better for my wallet and in general giving my guys a better wardrobe and better quality eyes and wigs. So im selling 2 big guys that being said i brought a doll head this morning..... So im actaully going to have the same number of dolls i did but its going to be a one in one out kinda house from now on.

I have a small-ish family by comparison right now--6 full dolls and three heads, but I want quite a few more dolls. I don't think I'll get above 25-30, though, and it's a very long-term sort of plan. ^^; I sometimes feel a little bad that I don't have the time to spoil each doll, and I do have my favorites for different things, but I would be very sad if I didn't have all of my darlings here. My only concern is space--I'm only getting big dolls! ^^;

I only have two dolls right now, though some day i would like to get two tines and another msd boy. However thats in the far future:shifty It seems like it would be fun to have a lot of dolls, but I'm with the crowd who feels like you couldn't focus on them enough. For now, I'm just gonna try to get my dollies some nice things and get their characters settled in my mind.

Plus lord knows the dolls aren't exactly the cheapest things in the world. :D But it does help you respect them more, considering the work needed to get one.

Like Brightfires, I went into the hobby planning on one doll. Just one. And then changed the number to 2...then 4...and then as more came out that I liked, they just seemed to multiply. And I have trimmed my collection down as much as I can, getting rid of all the dolls that I wasn't absolutly certain about, but as for the rest of them, I'm too attached now to sell them.:sweat I admit that some get more attention than others, but I love them all.

I don't think I have a large collection with seven dolls, especially when some friends have +20 dolls. I would like to bear a higher number but each time I went above seven or eight, I have felt overtaken and needed to resell the least loved of my collection. However if I have all the dolls I dream of, I'll have a serious problem ^^; Right now I've reached this limit and know I won't stand more dolls. But I still want two MSD and a SD... and possibly two tinies. I don't know how it will work. Last time I had that reselling urge, I had more than seven SD-sized dolls. But now some are smaller.

I've just aquired my fifth doll and I'm starting to realize that while I originally planned to have to complete doll casts, I'm not sure if I want to do that anymore. I'm probably going to get my sixth doll next month and with her coming the idea of bringing in the other four I really want plus the remaining two members of my current cast is feeling really overwhelming.

Part of it is because I feel like my current situation is really impermanent, and part of it is just because like others I really want to enjoy the dolls I have before bringing anyone new home. There will be more dolls in the future, but when and how many I don't know. I'm certain that I will complete my current cast though, and once I've done that I'll be able to really evaluate what I want.

I only have 2 right now but I'm not content with that, I want more! I have a very long wishlist though I don't think I'll ever own quite that many, I'll probably stop at around 6 or 8. Definitely 4 more to round out my current "family" plus 2 to give myself breathing room for new limiteds. :p I can't carry that many around on the road with me anyway so if I got a whole lot I wouldn't be able to enjoy most of them.

I have 12 right now, and like Brightfires, probably have a few too many. However, I really love the ones I have, and couldn't see parting with any of them.

However, unless something along the lines of Bermann comes along and knocks me off my feet, I think my collection is pretty much complete.

I planned to have around 7-8 originally, but at the beginning of the year, I got my 4th and felt that yeah, this is it. It's enough for me right now, and I'm comfortable with the number xD;;

And now I'm planning to get one more first. I think it'll extend to another one- and another, just one more! I keep getting the impulse to buy certain pretty dolls but it wouldn't be too good for my wallet xD So I'm keeping to buying the dolls I originally loved~ just to be safe xD

However in the end, I feel my doll collection will number 10 or below.

I have a lot of dolls - 17 full (14 large, 1 mini, 2 tinies) and 5 heads. (Floating heads are such a fabulous "cheat"!) I enjoy all of my dolls immensely and plan on more. The days "only one more" or "this is it" are looong gone! I've accepted my fate as a ABJD addict :doh

09-28-2007, 06:14 PM
Well......define "large". I wish I could have been content with 5 or so, but there are just too many that really appeal to me. I had several impulsive buys at first, but I have now thinned out my collection to the bare minimum and there are only a few that I currently would like to add. I have 23 right now; 7 SD sized, 1 child MSD size, 1 mature MSD size, 3 10" Yo type tinies, 1 1/6 size tiny, and 10 under 5" tinies. I am planning to limit myself to about 10 big dolls. I don't really count the tiny ones, because they are not nearly so expensive, they don't take up much space in my tiny house, and their clothes and accessories don't cost very much. I think I would like a couple more big guys and there are a couple of girls I would like, but after that, I think my collection will be complete.

It's funny, just in having made this thread and listening to so many others talking about how incomplete they felt without having dolls of certain characters in their story, I've realized that even though it is a difficult and expensive endeavour to get everything *perfect* for them, there are two more characters I really do need to have. I'm a little nervous for the fate of tinies because of that, actually, because I really really don't want too many again...

I only have two - which I think is fairly rare in this hobby - and am hugely content with them. (I've stayed at two for several years now.) However, there are dolls that I have my eye on, and I expect to be adding them to my group sooner rather than later. I've always been an extremely careful and cautious shopper, tending to plan meticulously rather than fall in love on impulse, so it's been a fairly lengthy 'journey' to buy each one. I've also probably not felt the need for more dolls because my first two fulfilled my love of them so well, in their very different ways. I can't imagine ever reaching double figures, but then we all say that to start with, don't we...? ;)

I'm glad that I don't find myself wanting dolls left and right. ^^; I know perfectly well that I can only spend so much on my dolls and only have so much space to keep them all. Right now I have two at home, and I'm saving up for a third as well as a floating head. But I find myself wanting another doll, so I guess I shouldn't limit myself to a set number.

So far I have 3 dolls, but I'm plaining to add 2 more into my small family. Which do me fine for the time being, but I've set myself just owning only 7 or 8 doll, will complete my family.

I can't imagein myself owning more than that, I hardly got any the space to put them or the love to take care of them, if it was a large size.
So I'm happy just to have small/mid size family ^-^

I don't have an opinion on the rightness of having a large or small collection, since new dolls are still available to all and we all have different tastes and loves, but I myself am becoming a little dismayed at the rate at which I am attaining dolls ^^;; I like what I like and I won't deny myself something just because I already have a certain number, especially if it's not limited - but I'd rather be getting them over a longer period of time then they're currently coming :P I thought I'd never have more than my core 3, then I got 3 more full dolls within a year, just ordered another new body (which potentially could be a whole new doll, though I don't think so right now) and put in for a lottery for one more (eep, I hope my entry gets through), plus I still have sleeping heads to paint which may become their own personalities and demand bodies. :P They're all suffering later-child syndrome, as I haven't had time to settle down and paint, or even fully name them all. But of course since ordering the way it is, I can't just wait until whenever I want to buy most of these (unless I want to pay a huge markup). It's really something I never imagined for myself, but as long as I can comfortable afford it, and don't feel like my ability to enjoy each particular one is comprommised, I'm satisfied.

*laughs* And I just cleared up my wishlist!

I didn't start out with a set number, and I don't expect to end on one either, but already I know that further purchases would be a very bad idea; not the least of which is that I have absolutely no room for my current Crew. And they must needs be clothed, shoed, and accesorized... supplied with props... XD;; To be honest, I'm much rather be spoiling my current Crew rather than adding to it.

This is a very tricky question. For me the ideal number of dolls would probably be about 4 or 5 as that's about all I have time to play with. BUT I do have 11 now with a 12th on the way and I just can't sell any. I love them all and when it comes down to downsizing, I just can't do it. So, I guess the answer is unclear in my case.

I've always been a person of many wants... i just wanted all the time, and when you want and can't have it makes you very miserable. i've been out of a job for a long time so i couldn't buy anything new. then i got a job, and i got a Reisner because i wanted the body for my F16.. but i loved Reisner's head so he got the SD13 body, and then i wanted scarface to be with my Reisner so i got him too... and then i was lucky to get schA head, which i've been planning to get for nearly 2 years (my most planned doll!). so, originally i wanted 3 dolls (and a mini), now i have 6 dolls! xD;

but, ever since i got my scarface and my schA (well it was hardly a week ago xD), i've been feeling so content with my dolls. i don't feel any 'want' anymore, and it's such an amazing feeling, it's hard to explain. i wish i could feel that way about my entire life!
the only doll i still want is another MSD boy to accompany my sweet Mikey, because i want him to have a friend his own size to photograph him with.
but even tho i plan to get that second MSD, i don't feel want or need, so it's not a naggy miserable feeling and it makes me very happy. the end :)

In the beginning I was only planning to have one doll and spoil her...and I did it, during 2 years. Then, to develop this doll personality I felt that I needed more dolls with their own personality. Nowadays I have 5 dolls, and the maximum number of dolls I want to have around is 8. I think they are a good number.

Trust me here, it doesn't just *seem* like a big group. *_*

I'm awaiting a couple of bodies and the one doll I kept denying myself for an entire year (unidoll UH-08). After that it's time to really focus on who stays and who just doesn't mean as much.

And that is going to be HARD going for me. Easily as hard as it was to decide which kitten out of my momma cat's litter of five was staying with me. Man. :|

I currently have 13 complete dolls plus a couple of disembodied heads. That was never actually planned; the "family" just gradually grew over time. Now I have the baby to occupy most of my time however, I don't see it growing at the rate it has done over the past three years. I want to get Lysande (my modded Vamp Elf Yder) his own body, and I'm thinking about upgrading Ayame's character (the other disembodied head) to a Domuya Fin at some point, but there's no specific timeline in mind - just an "at some point".

Having a large group makes for more interesting photostories, but then again with the baby taking up the majority of my time, I'm pretty much on hiatus from the stories anyway, so there'll be less impetus to add new characters to the cast.

I started out in this hobby with the idea that I'd get one and that was it, but low and behold, 5 years later I sit surrounded by 4 dolls, with one head on the way.

I think once I started getting dolls to be my characters, I started wanting to get more and more of them - If that weren't that case, I'd be more than happy with a small collection, but right now, I eventually want my entire cast.

I also starting out the idea that I would only have one doll and that would be it, but later I decided to go for my dream doll, a CP Yder, when they suddenly released Elf Yder and I knew I had to get one. XD And after that, I fell for a tiny, so now I have all three sizes and I'm very happy with them. ^^

I like lots of other dolls, but don't feel the need to get them. Just looking at owner pics is enough for me. :)

I spent an entire year in the hobby firmly believing that I could never even afford one doll. (I merely participated in other people's enjoyment, if that makes sense.) Then I finally got one and was certain that was going to be all I could ever afford. Then I came into some money and cheated -- I bought a doll for my best friend/flatmate. That way, I didn't really own two dolls, but my boy still had company. ;) Yet somehow in less than a year those two multiplied to four. Now, at my 6th year in the hobby, that number has reached eleven, with an extra head here with a body due soon. :oops
(I think what amazes me the most is that I've managed all this on a student budget. :lol)

I had a plan for my dolls... a plan that slowly got bigger.. but heck, I had still sworn that it ended at eight dolls. I even remember going "I've got them all! My plan is complete!" Then I found the tinies... then Volks released Reisner who just HAD to go with my Scarface... then I found my holy grail head on Y!JA... I think I've learnt at this point that there's no such thing as "no more dolls". ;) While I technically only have plans for one more, I know better than to think that may be it, and I'm resigned to be open to suggestion, as it were. *laugh*

I don't mind having a big family though -- while it can be overwhelming sometimes to turn around and see them all sitting there, I love each and every one of them very dearly, and each in a different way, as they all have their own quirks. I wouldn't and couldn't ever part with any of them. So, there may be a lot of them taking over my room, but we're all happy here. :D

I always planned to have just a few and I think I've been good with that so far. I have one SD13 boy, an MSD girl, and a (big) tiny girl. I like having 1 of each size. If I got another (sort of on the fence about it), it would be an SD girl.

I like to buy expensive clothing and accessories, so a lot of money goes into making the dolls I do have look good, instead of buying other dolls :)

I never intended to have as many as I have and I keep thinking I should keep it at 10, but I don't know who would go out of my "core" group. I've had some others come and go, but I think these are staying! Maybe as long as I keep it under 15. I don't know how people can handle some of the really large collections though; they would take up a lot of space and need a lot of clothes and accessories!

I've currently got 3 dolls, and that seems like a happy number for me. I can lavish each of them with attention; I think I'd feel guilty if I didn't play with one of them for a while. :sweat But, I do plan on growing my family-- I just don't know by how much. The problem is that I'm getting character ideas all the time. Some of them are to fill archetypes (I will have you someday, Rocker Girl! :tantrum), but the much more common problem I've encountered is that certain dolls and sculpts start speaking to me. Before I know it, these new dolls become integral characters to the loose "story" that ties my dolls together. At one time or another in the past year, I've had pretty detailed plans for at least a half-dozen other dolls.

While I think I'd be happy with a much bigger collection, my commitment to other interests sets a reasonable limit on how many more dolls I'll be adding.

My apartment is so absurdly tiny that I felt crowded by my two 60cm dolls. Maybe that's why I'm sticking with mature minis now. I literally do not have the space for more than 4-5 dolls even if they ARE minis, so I guess my collection will have to stay small unless I move into a bigger apartment.

I have currently 3 dolls with three more on the day by February. I'd like to think I want a small family but I know realistically, it'll be bigger. I want to stop at 8. I really really want to. :cry

However, if two of my holy grail dolls are every reachable- that number 8 gets busted to bits. I guess I would just be happy if all my dolls are sufficiently clothed, etc. The number of dolls for me is as many as I can afford to take care of- wigs, shoes, very expensive eyes, etc.

I'm not a "collecter". I have two dolls, and even though one of them constantly is away for face ups or repairs, that feels like a lot to me. I think almost every Norwegian doll owner has more than me, even the ones who started this year while I've been in the hobby since 2005.

I like it like that. It's cheaper to have fewer dolls, giving me more money to spend on clothes, eyes and other fancy stuff ^^ Plus, my appartment can't house more than a few dolls.

The majority of my dolls are based on characters from my favorite anime/mangas, and those series happen to have lots of characters, so if I didn't limit myself, I'd be drowning in dolls right now. XD

...You are drowning in dolls. *_* Mind you, some of them are mine.

When I first got into this hobby, I never thought, "I'll just have one doll" or "Omg want ever doll ever!" I went into with no plan whatsoever. I have...uhh *counts* six now (seven if you count the kitty). I don't really...want a huge collection for the sake of having a huge collection...I just want to give all the characters a chance to have their resin forms too. Does that make any sense? I don't want all my characters to be dolls, just the ones I've grown close/attached to...but that's still a lot of dolls. I don't play with all my dolls constantly, but the characters also live in my head so I don't feel as though I'm neglecting them.

I never intended to have more than two, mmmaybe three dolls. Honest.

Then I saw an MSD limited who was perfect for Lucien's little brother, and HAD to get him... then my girlfriend bought me a head for my first and only girl doll who was a perfect twin to her first boy... Then we started planning a separate little dolly family and things kind of snowballed from there. :p By myself I own nine and a half dolls (she and I share Rhys), and one head that time-shares a body. And I'm perfectly happy with all of them, as well getting to play with the eight and a half and one head that my girlfriend has. I even unashamedly have plans for at least one more, a brother for my wonderful Gabriel - the FCS F-17 I originally planned on being my second and last doll, heh. Those limiteds sure did take me by storm!

It does seem like a lot to me, and I definitely do not want more than one more...with an upper limit of, um, five more because I know there's a handful that I want desperately if the opportunity and money were available at the same time. And that's really what most of my collection is about: at that time I fell in love with a sculpt, and I had the money, so I felt I simply couldn't pass it up. And I've never regretted a single purchase. I've never sold any of the dolls I bought intending to keep.

In one sense, having a lot of dolls is fabulous because you can "rotate" who you pay the most attention to, and still feel that the others have adequate companionship amongst themselves. :sweat Then come back to one you haven't loved on in a while, and fall in love all over again.

On the downside, none of them have enough clothes of their own; some suffer from "single-outfit" syndrome, and it seems like whenever there's a month I want to buy a lot of clothes (or even a few outfits to tide over some of the boys), there's a pinch in my wallet for other reasons at that same time.

I have a large number of dolls and sometimes do feel overwhelmed. I think I got so many dolls in my quest to find the 'perfect' doll, and I'm afraid I may be still searching. I have sold many and bought many more, but I just know the perfect doll must still be out there. I find myself envying people who have one or two dolls that they feel really connected with.

As long as I can save the money I have no compunctions with getting as many dolls as I want XD
All but two of my dolls are based on characters of my own, or from table top roleplaying games. I'm a big collector but it has to be to make a character 'flesh/resin' rather than just collecting for the moulds ^^

I don't have the space or time or money for a gazillion dolls, but that hasn't kept me from getting more dolls than I thought I'd ever get... I have around 8 (lots of heads and body-sharing can make more).

I think I could have been happy with a few! I'm not sure I'd be happiER than I am now... nor that having the number I do has made me any less happy... So I guess I'm in the middle about this issue. I'd be happy with a few and about the same happy with more! *_*

I currently have two and it took me a pretty long time(as in,a year and a half)to come up with a wishlist. I have one now and it has 4 sd-size dolls on it, so I'm saving for those now..afterwards, I want to slow down and spoil them and carefully start again with a new wishlist, just like I did this time. I'm insanely picky, only my dream dolls-not just headmold, but body, skintone, hands, everything, get a place on my wishlist, so I don't think I'll ever have all that many, even though there are many dolls I like.

I started off with one doll, who was based off of a character I created. Then I thought he should have his son with him and I bought a tiny. This I thought well my original doll should have his best friend because he can't hang out with kids all the time. Then I though he should really have is brother here too. So now is brother is on the way.

I never planned on having this many dolls, it just worked itself out that. But I'm telling myself that it's enough. I can always appreciate someone else doll without owning it myself.

Ohh--but it is so exciting when the new doll arrives!

I have my 6 perfect minis, and that is a lot--for me anyway! :damnit I think 4 would be better, but I can't give up two, so all six are all staying at the moment.:heart

I often like to see them in different outfits and I sometimes feel overwhelmed when I want to change everyone's clothes, shoes, wigs, etc. Changing faceups--even more time and work! It is also harder (for me) to photograph 6 bjds at a time, (and I love to do family portraits.)

Having said that, I miss the planning, and buying, and waiting for a doll to arrive.:cry I am older, established, and I have a big house. I certainly can afford more bjds, but I am at the "saturation" point. I suppose that could be one of the reasons people get into different sizes, and buy and sell those bjds they have "not bonded" with. Lately, I just spend my money buying clothes and shoes for the resin kids.

Kudos to those that can have high numbers of bjds, you must be more organized then me!:blush I have been in this bjd hobby less then 2 years, and I have learned to never say never.

I have a 15-man resin army, which sounds like a lot to some people. But it doesn't feel large to me. I feel this is a nicely-contained & cohesive unit. They all just fit on one tabletop (in a 1-bedroom apartment), and they don't tax my brain keeping their names straight, and everybody gets adored in their turn.

I never feel guilty over the size of my collection. Guilt is a waste of time, so I just tune out any snarky 'less is more' propaganda wherever it presents itself. Everybody's got different comfort levels of how many dolls they feel they can handle, store, love and outfit at one time. Since I only buy for True Love, every man in my army was a wanted man. <3

I am happy with my collection being the size & shape it is right now. So I don't plan on buying anymore right now.... Of course, I don't know how long THAT will last. XD The more delicious sculpts keep being released by all these companies, the harder it is to keep one's moratoriums in place. We can all quit anytime we want, right? Riiiight.

I would really like to try and keep the number of large dolls down, however there are so many new and wonderful new dolls coming out every month.. makes it hard to resist.

so I began selling off one whenever I think about getting a new one. It helps keep the population down, and I only really really miss one doll something awful.. I guess I can always tell whenever I have a special name or a character name jumps out when I see or dress them for the first time..

Honestly though, I have mostly 60cm, a very few middle sized dolls, and some petite sizes, (Yo mostly) and a gaggle of tinies too. I tend to rotate how much I fool around with them.. however always play with my big kids!

More is more! While a part of me thinks that going back to just a couple of dolls would mean tons of money for just those dolls, I inevitably find a new doll that I simply must own. And since I collect my dolls in pairs, once I have that doll I then have to find that doll their companion doll.

My doll plans are going up to as many as 20 dolls, mainly because they're all members of a cast of a rather long, complicated storyline I have going on in my head. I refuse to go over 20 and I've acknowledged to myself that there are some that may end up more as display than anything else, but then I also tend to go in cycles with my dolls that I do have...it just means I play with a certain part of the cast for a time then I skip over to another group.

I think people end up with the right amount of dolls for them--for me, sadly, it seems that I am going to be getting to 20. However, within that 20 I'm gonna have a little bit of everything SD-sized, MSD-sized, a couple tinies, a variety of skin tones and styles, etc. so it will be great fun figuring out how to best photograph and write them all ^_^

I think that's part of my problem right now. I know where I'm currently living is going to be temporary, on a few years, and while it's not tiny it's definitely huge. I already have two more dolls here than I had when I came and the thought of having to transport them all eventually makes my head spin.

Once I have a more permanent location where I can delegate space for dolls then I'll really know what size doll family I can handle.

I suspect that I'm coming to the end of my collection, because I only have so much room in my apartment, and only two more characters I need dolls for. So I don't see myself ever owning more than seven or eight. The only doll I can think of that I'd get outside of my planned remaining two would be if Elfdoll released tinies of their Rainy boys, as they did for Ryung and Soah. I'd HAVE to have a mini Red. Otherwise, I've got to stop somewhere. And 7/8 is the stopping point. I just don't see myself with a huge collection.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who planned for a handfull and ended up with an army. When I purchased my first doll, I thought three total would be ideal. It's been three years since then. The Horde is now 20+. I have a couple heads I'd like to sell as well, but I don't count them in my total.
I do feel overwelmed on occassion, but I've only ever managed to sell one doll. Parting with any of the others would be like sawing off a limb. Will I adopt more? Probably. If nothing else, I have an original head nearly ready for production...

I can never see myself having more than 5. Even then, I doubt I'll get that high. I don't know what I'd do with them, frankly.

I have one full doll at the moment and a floating head. Even with just those two I could be entirely set and happy.

It used to be that I was capped out at 6. Now I'm at 8, I still feel like I want to be back at 6, but 8 is doing well. I think in the end I may stay at 8 or maybe 9, that would be the max. I once had... I think it was 12 dolls, that was a little much!

Had one doll for more than half a year, and was fully content with admiring other people's larger doll family, but then must be something in the air lately, because I've sold off that doll, and added 4 more to the family. Plus another one on the way. XD Setting a limit may work for some people, but it must be the rebel in me, because everytime I do, I'll somehow end up going over the limit. I do know that I would like to keep it to a managable number though; by 'managable', I mean a number where each doll will get a fair share of attention, and not just be a dust collector that never has a change of clothes. ;)

I had originally planned to have ONE SD boy and girl, keyword here being "planned". They seemed to have invited all their friends and relatives over and we have about 20+ now. I am still not quite sure how it all happened.

Right now I just want a few. Originally I had more planned for story characters, but there just isn't the room for them all.

Who knows what will happen in the future though. It might not be easy to stick to my plan of having to sell a doll if I absolutely wanted to have another mold. :oops

I have a large-ish collection, especially when combined with my girlfriend's dolls. We have going on twenty complete between us plus some heads. We both plan to get more to round out our cast of characters. I have been feeling content with my group and although there are two dolls I'm planning to get I'm not in a rush to have them in hand, they'll get here when I'm ready for them.

I guess I feel the need to have all of my characters but I like the idea of having fewer. When I look at them all together I can't imagine getting rid of any of them, so I'll just have a large group. :D

I started out with a few, then kept finding more that, at least at the time, I just couldn't go on without. As each of them has a character, personality and backstory--more often than not, tied in with other dolls of mine, or my friend's dolls--I'd have a very hard time selling, and the natural result is that I end up with a lot of dolls. -_-;; Right now my census is WAY higher than I ever anticipated and still with more planned for when I have money again. I'm sure at some point I'll stop buying new dolls, or at the very least taper it off, but until then I need to find more horizontal surfaces in my apartment.

Could I have been just as satisfied with fewer dolls? Absolutely. At no point in this odyssey was I disappointed with what I had. Do I worry about them being neglected individually? A little. I don't have enough time in my average day to mess with each and every one, but generally play with one or two at a time, redressing, rediscovering, fighting with my camera to take half-decent pictures. As large as my cast has gotten, I don't regret that it has, and I don't foresee any massive sell-off to trim the ranks. No matter how many I have, they're each special to me for their own reasons and I'd be hard-pressed to part with them.

This whole issue would be so much simpler if companies would stop making dolls I like. >_< Curses.

I wish having too many dolls was my problem @_@ I'm barely able to hold onto a couple of heads at a time. I've got 8 dolls planned and I have heads for 2 of them. I'll probably end up adding another one on, just to make the pairings even (One of them is underage, thus isn't part of a couple. I know, gasp!shock!horror from those that know that I'm a huge shota fan ._.)

Anyway, I have a specific story to run out with them and I'm sure that I'll have much more story by the time I actually have them all. So who knows, by then I may want to add more or I may just stop and be content with that. But that's so far away @_@ For now, I'm dreaming of my 8.

I always want another doll. =/ I thought my five MSDs were okay for quite a bit...I have three more planned, but I could totally wait. THEN a Curo fullset popped up on the DoA Marketplace. THEN LadySaiyuki showed us all Ted. THEN someone put up a really well-priced Bobobie Erin. And now I have all three (Erin's on her way, Ted will be made all in good time) more. It's insane...but I love them ALL.

When I started this hobby I dreamed of two dolls, a 60 cm boy and a girl. But have never really made up my mind of how many dolls is the maximum for me. As long as I have room for them all I'm fine. Though I'm not dreaming of a dollfamily larger than 15. Luckily, not that many dolls appeal to me so much I would want them for my family. :)

I'm a serial collector, so I always want to buy something new. Generally, I've been good about selling a older doll (or other collectibles) before I'm allowed to get a new one. Still, I've managed to get up to 4 dolls and a body, with a head incoming at L.A. Dolpa. One of those dolls may not be around for too much long, though I do have a doll in mind to (quite literally) fill her shoes. There are just too many pretty pretty sculpts out there :D

I definitely didn't start in this hobby to have more than a doll or two but there was always an unexpected addition and I didn't have any plans until recently when I wanted a certain character or two. But like Lady Brick, I'm a bit of a collector too so I guess it was inevitable that I'd end up with more. I reallllly hope I don't end up with too much more than the one I have planned :oops

I have 6 and one more on the way. I thought 5 would be a good number to stick with, then found another I wanted. I'm not going to limit myself with a specific number, but I probably won't ever have a HUGE collection due to the costs involved AND I like to PLAY with my dolls, so I don't need a whole bunch of dolls sitting around looking at me and making me feel guilty for not having the time to sew for and play with them...ha!ha! At least one of each size doll would be nice though :)

I'm sorry to hear about the circumstances of your doll collection growing, Voodoo. ):

Um, as for me, I've never been one to spread my attention to too many things at once, so I'm very determined to keep my numbers down to 5 at the most. I'm already having some trouble paying attention to the three I do have despite my attachment to them and I have doubts about acquiring another any time soon.

That said, there's so many beautiful head molds and dolls out there, it's hard not to be at least a little bit tempted. :x I'm envious of the people who can own many gorgeous dolls and not feel like they aren't giving them all enough attention XD

Less can be more, but more is still... more. It's just not for me, alas.

I'm *quite* sure I'm satisfied with my doll family as it is now.. U-Noa's have always been my dream dolls, and I have three of them: a flat-chested Lusis, a boobed Sist, and a Sist/B-El boy - especially for sewing purposes those are all I really need, right? ;)
And I recently got my first tiny, just for fun: a Roonodoll Yumi. She's adorable in her own way, and I love having her around.

When I first got into the dolls I had a HUGE list of dolls I wanted, which was nearly every single MSD size doll I saw. But when I was making a "definate purchase" wishlist, I realised my list is way smaller than I thought it would be. I got 7 I want to purchase, 6 realstically I can get in the next year for sure (#7 is a Volks FCS and that requires more planning). Nearly all on the list are MSDs and mature MSDs at that (well the girls are, some of the boys I pity cause they weren't "gifted" between the legs). So I would have maybe 10 at the most as there are molds I like and drool over, but would I spend the money to buy it probably not.

Although I will say 10 at the most I will probably eat one day, as I get more of my own book series off the ground and can't find pictures to be happy with, and rather than looking I'll just buy doll versions of them. Any other rp characters I come to see as important or stand out to me, that can quickly add to the list. Just got to limit myself :tantrum:sweat

I wish to have up to fifty BJDs in the end. Atleast. Maybe more, though I need a bigger apartment by then. :D

I fooled myself into the hobby by believing that two would be enough. Silly me. But I do like the fact that I can have a whole crew even though I don't do so many photostories. I just like to have them. They're pretty and they make my day better even when I just look at them.

I immediately started with three even though I planned on spoiling my first for at least a year before getting another one. Things like that happen a lot in this hobby XD; To tell you the truth, I was pretty overwhelmed. It took me awhile to get used to their sizes and for me to get used to sewing for them.

I always want more and I plan to buy more in the future, but for now I feel like I'm content with my three. I've had them for nearly two years now and I like having a small collection. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have more, but I just feel like I have more time to be creative with them instead of stressing out over getting everyone dressed properly ^_^.

EDITED on February 19, 2008:
My resin family recently turned from three to five. It's pretty overwhelming for me to have this amount, I can only imagine how it's like for those that have more than ten X3.

Well, I *could* be happy with just a few if there weren't so many lovely dolls that just keep haunting me until I have them. I have nine dolls at the moment, plus a bodiless head, and there's about ten more on my wishlist. It's not a problem for me to have many dolls - I love them all (even though there are a couple of favourites), and I don't feel like I'm obliged to spend quality time with each of them every day or every week..

My dolls are not pre-existing characters; I develop the characters after falling in love with a certain doll first. So it's all the doll companies' fault - they make too many pretty dolls!

Kiyakotari
10-16-2007, 05:45 PM
I've got way too many characters that poke me and ask for resin. And then there are the ones that are a bit more than mere characters, and that don't bother asking.

So I guess I have to say "big collection" here. I've already got...hmmm...Hiiro, Daiichi, Aiko, Luke Alan, Little Evil, Darryl, Talon, Wren, Jian, Umbrae, Tyaeli, Rafe, the Magdalena-thing, the Un-Named Project Doll...and that's only the FULL dolls. On top of that there's Adult!Aiko's head, Adult!Luke Alan's head, Katje's Head, the two Mau heads, the Misa-Minky head, the two other new heads that are currently debating their futures with me (I had something specific in mind for one, but now he's arguing, and I know what I want to do with the other one but she's not settled in enough yet to have a name), and the Gretel head. So that's... 14 full dolls (one of which - Magdalena thing - may not be staying) and 9 heads. Oh, and there's an SD13 girl body that I may-or-may-not be selling, but which currently has no head on it.

Oh! And JadeIllusion's Strider is staying with me while I do some work on him and try to find a faceup artist for her, and I'm almost done paying off my best friend's Suntan Hye, Eve (she's a Yule gift).

So. Er. Room is the biggest obstacle for me at the moment. Because I pretty much didn't have any to start with, and now I have even less than that.

I never planned to have 10 dolls. Heck, I never even planned to have one. They just sort of....happened.

Each of my dolls has filled a need or a space or a style that I didn't even know needed filling until the right doll came along. Each one of them reached out, grabbed me, and said "You're Taking Me Home, Stop Fighting." They're not characters in a story, they simply are who they are.

I won't say I'll never buy another doll, because I'm actually considering another one right now, but I don't tend to go out looking for dolls. They tend to find me. I liked my collection when it was smaller, and I like it now, mostly because I still adore every last one of my dolls. And that's the important part to me.

I have quite a few dolls, but only a few are ever out at one time.

When I started in this hobby I swore I'd only "need" one, but as it happens I now have the dolls I need to fit in with the story that I've written. The trick at this point is limiting the story, lol. I really really don't need any more dollies, but oh my do I always find "just one more" to pine over :doh

Realistically, I can't afford to have a huge number of dolls and tons of clothes for each... I much prefer the idea of two that are brilliantly dressed and well paid attention to.

My first intention was to get one doll, just one. And "spoil" it completely rotten with the best of everything. XD Well that didn't work out, I saw another doll I loved...and another...and another... That's not so strange I guess, I don't know anyone who's been in the hobby for more than three years who has only owned one the entire time. But sometimes I wish I had stuck closer to my first intent, as more dolls does mean cheaper things, or buying less at a time.

So now I have four, and I think that I'm pretty close to my personal limit. I can't see myself having more than say, six of any size. I like having an even number of things in general, plus I'm an accessory and prop hog so each girl needs her own set of things. I wouldn't want more than I could comfortably carry in a single reasonably sized bag. (Two of mine are 1/6 tinies.) Just thinking about six seems like almost too many unless two almost never left the house. But like the first time I expanded my collection, for the right mold I could probably forget all about that...

I love the idea of having dolls cuz they will a space or a style, you expressed the idea of more than one so perfectly.

When I first saw my Volks Tohya, I was amazed at the detail. and the quality of the doll, like a work of art to me.. I had to have him, but then he did need a girl companion, so Cyndy was welcomed, (since getting a Madoka was almost impossible) I realized I loved the Volks dolls best, so on to the Tokyo boys.. and that was about 4 years ago.. I wish I could say that I have kept my resin family under 10 dolls, but that wasn't the case. cuz I discovered Pocket fairies and some other tinies that I just adore.

Now, it seems I am more careful about who comes into the fold next, and who leaves.. (cuz if new doll comes, one goes- that's the rule)

So since Alice the Pig came this week, (cute elfdoll tiny) Devil Hana will probably be the one to leave!

Im a victim of the "Adoption." 95% of my dolls are pre-loved and adopted from the DoA marketplace. They all have their reasons to have come lived here. a few were destined to be with me (Like Ringo and Ara) others was love (Kishi and Neli my dream girl) Others i felt bad for and they grew on me after viewing them so many times in the marketplace (Dean, Kanda) some are original wish list dolls (Motoko, Joan, Neli, Bada)

Before i knew it my collection is encroaching on 30 @_@ which is alot and ALMOST too many. I've adopted one out (I just couldnt bond with him. i had him for almost a year and my friend adored him. so i let him move on) ...but i got a girl in return.

A part of me thinks i should down size significantly, because i see all these people who have less then 10 dolls and how much they bond with them and all that they do with them.

Then i stare at my shelves and all of the "kids" and try to think about who i could live without...and then i realise i cant. There all special in some way and im attached to them all.

I'm expecting a few new dolls in the up coming months. And i may adopt some of them out after enjoying them for a little while...dunno, we'll see when they get here.

Im a sentimental fool and grow attached to things easily. so rehomeing if it happens will be diffcult for me...and will probably be to only close friends. (and i dont have many who colect dolls..so we'll see)

I wish I could have just a few! Imagine how easy it all would be! Having many can be very overwhelming!! It's hard to clothe so many properly. And when more than one needs a new faceup, or hasn't had any photos in a while, or needs restringing... the thought of all the work I have to do just puts me off from doing any of it at all @_@

But I know myself too well. Even if I'd had the foresight to limit myself from the beginning, I would constantly be fighting to keep myself from buying more. And that's no fun! ;3

I'm pretty much set in the number of how many dolls I want, in knowing it won't ever go over 6. They're all character dolls, or rather, based off a specific storyline I've been working on, so the cast is all but set. Sure, as the storyline expands of course more characters are going to be introduced, but I had to think long and hard before deciding to add in a fifth doll, Elijah, onto my list, awhile after his character was brought into the plot.

Of course, I have this rather weird pet peeve in that I hate things in odd numbers, and adding Elijah, as mentioned, brings the list to five. I'm a little nervous that in the long run having an odd amount of dolls is going to drive me to the point of wanting to sell one, but at the same time, getting a sixth doll just for the sake of even-ing things out is, we can all say it, rather silly, especially if I feel nothing for the doll.

True, there are loads of sculpts out there I adore, quite a few SDs I pine over and wish so so so SO badly I had a character for, but knowing me, simply saving and buying one and them bringing him home with no idea who he is. Nope. That method simply doesn't work for me.

Considering it's an extremely long process to save up for each and every one, I don't foresee my collection ever 'booming'. There is also the fact that I was so totally overwhelmed when I completed my second SD girl...

I do have two more on my wishlist, but they're more of a 'maybe one day' thing.
I like daydreaming and thinking about the doll possibilities as much as actually getting dolls. :)

Yes, I also said 'just one' in the beginning, though. Never thought I'd be able to afford more than one.

I have a large collection of dolls in general, but I have just discovered the BJD world and I know that I will be adding more as time goes on. I am having a little difficulty deciding which direction to go...luckily for me (and my bank account) there aren't a gazzilion dolls that are grabbing my attention right now...but that will change I am sure!

Ive just got one doll and I dont really intend to get any other doll any time soon.

I knew I only wanted one doll from the start so that the "BJD" stays special, I somehow think that by purchasing more, she'll feel less unique to me and that is an attribute I cherish about her most.

I like having one doll because it means that I can spoil her as much as I can, and to be honest, having her is like having many other dolls .. with every faceup/eye/wig change :)

besides, none of the dolls now would complement her due to her full childlike face since the direction most BJD companies are going now tends to be mature & realistic

I can see my self having many many BJDs. Right now I have one. I already have the next one picked out and budgeted. I can see limitations to how many I can have at one time. I was collecting figures of favorite characters. My figure collection got so large that I had slowed down purchases and now have stopped further buys. Some will find new homes to make way for the BJDs that are coming home. With the larger SD/SD13 sizes I am interested in the limit is probably about 10 to 12. But donft hold me to it. :)

for me, it's based upon finding a doll that i like enough to want to actually own and put down all that money for...
out of the many bjds that have been released, there are only five more that i want to own. i know that i am not easily swayed, so i know i will not have a large collection, and i am quite content with that. i'd definitely want to dote on them and make sure i could buy them stupid, silly things. i think it's easier to do that with a small brood- when you have a low income.

There are so many new and beautiful dolls coming out all the time (it seems like almost every day), that I just take a quick, admiring peek, and don't rush to push the "buy" button. Instead, I make myself study a potential doll I am considering in depth, look at the doll site pics, and lots and lots of owner pics (if available, that is), read about posing and resin quality, etc., consider if this potential new doll will look right/good with my other dolls, how well it would work for the character avatar I'm searching for, consider the price of the doll (can I reasonably afford, etc.), and if all points to a "yes", then and only then do I purchase. I don't feel comfortable if I have too many dolls or other things around (just the way I am, I like to keep things spacious), so this is a good way, for me anyway, to keep down the number of dolls to just what feels most comfortable. But everyone is different in their collecting methods, so to each their own! :)

I think it's better to get dolls that not only catches your eye, but also can 'speak' to you. What's the point of getting one that you can't bond w? That said, I feel that there're only a few dolls in the world that are special to each individual. :D

I started out with one and was happy with her for many months. Then I saw Supia 60 and couldn't say no. She was the first realistic BJD I had seen. After her it was again many more months before I bought another one and when I got to five I felt I needed to stop because they were taking over my bedroom (much to the chagrin of my husband). However, the dolls soon acquired new living quarters in the spare bedroom and now have a doll room of their own. I plan on only buying dolls I really love and it takes me awhile to make a decision. With the exception of my Supia 60, I always hold off for at least a couple of months before purchasing a doll just in case my interest wanes. It has often enough that I know better.

Currently, I have eight and it works. I won't say I will definitely not buy another doll but I also won't say I will definitely buy more. As long as I don't feel overwhelmed by my dolls and feel I have time to customize them then having a large collection is okay, though I could never see myself owning as much as 30. By then the dolly room would be more like a class room or office.

Oh dear Lord. The million dollar question. I don't really have characters and backstories for mine, so maybe it's a little different. But I do have a weird thing where I like even numbers. I have four SD size girls, and four SD size boys,( which is fine and I don't want any more). I also have a MNF,two Bambi's, and a Uyoo, with a Yo on the way.( For some reason smaller dolls don't count, LoL). My daughter has two MSD size dolls, but it's all so easy for them to multiply. I just find it impossible to sell any of my dolls,( except for a Minimee which I have two of anyway, so that doesn't count), so that's my downfall. I see dolls I love, buy them, but can't keep the numbers down by selling others, so my collection grows. But I really don't want any more than eight SD sized dolls.* Help*:D

I will probably always have just a few, carefully selected and well-loved dolls. I originally planned to only get one, but then fell in love a second time. I would like to get each of them a companion, but I have a hard and fast rule: the doll has to tell me its name. If I look at the photo and just think, "That's a beautiful doll" without a name and at least a basic personality popping into my head, I know it's still not the right one (which is why Kiyoshi is still single, poor guy). I probably won't be getting one of the Luts Zuzu Delf kitties after all because of The Rule, but I may be in trouble with the black Baha: a name has come up even though no one's seen the doll yet!

Right now I have just one special girl with me and although I was originally planning for five dolls, at the moment, I'm just too happy with just one. Other than the fact that I have such a small living area and a very busy lifestyle, Ulalume is actually my dream doll of sorts. I really adore Kurumi and wanted a little Lin, but the MSD F-18 was totally perfect. Not too big, not too small and her requested face-up surpassed what I originally wanted for her. So, somehow I can say that I'm already very content with what I already have. Someday, I'll buy another doll but I don't think I'll love them more than Ulalume. :oops

I'm another one who intended on only having one. Then it got to me. The most I've had was 5, but it's down to 4 now, and I really think if I can get the one I'm now obsessed with, (DT Seola) that would be it for me. I think it takes a while for a person to develop their sort of doll tastes. It evolves...

I have two right now, and don't really plan on having more than five, so I'm not sure if that counts as a large collection or not? XD Even if I had unimagineable wealth and riches, I don't think I'd go over 10 because I don't think I could justify them to myself--I wouldn't have enough free time to spend with them all!

I have quite a few dolls and I love each and every one of them. I never thought how many I would have; I just bought what looked wonderful.
To be fair, I think that the tinies shouldn't count as much as the msds and the msds shouldn't count as much as the big dolls.
That means that I don't have so many dolls.
I can rationalize anything. :)

I have two real rabbits and I am very glad that I don't collect rabbits the way I collect dolls!

Right now I have a very small collection in terms of the BJD world. Especially when I look at other collectors who have been in the hobby just as long as I have (about 2 and a half years) who have a much larger collection than I do.

I think I'm happy with a medium-sized collection. My wish list is a bit large, but if I someday get the dolls I am planning I will end up with 8-10 (of varying sizes). I really don't think I could have more than that, as I'm generally put off by large collections. So, in the middle for me. ;)

I think it would be easy to succumb to having quite a large collection until you realized you couldn't take care of all of them as well as you'd prefer to do. I've had other collector-type hobbies with the same issues. It's been easy for me to succumb to another house plant or rose bush and those kinds of things really suffer if neglected. It's no good getting collector-mania if you end up hating it for causing a mess as well as wrecking your budget.
To curb such an over-zealous trait, I always try to do my homework in advance, enjoy learning as much as I can and really think about what I was trying to do, so I can steer limited funds toward the best possible results.
I've also learned that other people's ideas and needs affect what I decide to do, as well.
On my own, I'd probably never indulge in any of the BJD girls, but given family members who want to do sewing on girls as well, I've just bought a head to learn faceups on, and I will be looking for a body for it. This turns out to be a great excuse for me to dive into stuff I wouldn't have allowed myself otherwise, she didn't start off on the list of characters I wanted to embody. But she's interesting and I find myself astonished that she may develop in completely unexpected ways.
I may not stop there, which my wallet is whimpering about. I'm sure others are familiar with the kind of noise I get from my first doll, who has a definite presence and very firm ideas that he needs other resin people around for company. He has some suggestions about a proper boyfriend, with diagrams and suggestions and color swatches, you betcha.

I'm down to 2 SD boys atm (both spoiled rotten!)- and i do enjoy having a rather small resin family, mainly because I live the life of a normad...so it'd be a problem for me to have many dolls. I do think it's wonderful to see people with larger families^^

Our current doll plan is seven and honestly as we usually end up sitting for some of our friends' dolls (like when they fly home for Thanksgiving or what have you), I don't think I could handle more than that. Because I don't think I could give them all the attention they deserve and that would bother me more than anything else. Our dolls are based off characters we write and have had for going on five years now so there's sentimental value attached. I'd rather get those seven and concentrate on pampering them.

I would be happy with only a few (heck, I only planned on owning a couple), but they're really addicting. :D --honestly I really tried to keep it a couple! -- Especially when doll companies keep coming out with gorgeous molds. It's like potato chips, you can't just have one, heh.

I guess I should add, that it's really hard to keep your collection only to a few, when you start making your bjds into the characters you've created. You can't make a couple characters into dolls, and not make the others, you really need to do all of them (especially if they're all in the same storyline. Or that's what I'm finding out, heh.

It doesn't have to be large, but it does have to be "right" (for me, that is). :p
With this in mind, all of my BJD's represent my own personal literary characters, and therefore I like them to be in the same basic size range, and for the overall "aesthetic" of the dolls to harmonize with each other, as I am very picky about that sort of thing (for my own personal collection, that is). So, the answer, is yes, I'm happy with who I have in my little doll "family", and am pretty choosy about who gets added to the bunch, so that really helps to eliminate any impulse buys, as each purchase is now planned out to meet my various criteria. (I didn't always plan so carefully in the beginning, but now have pretty much re-homed those who don't fit into my group), and this re-homing process has really helped to keep the number of my dolls down to a reasonable amount.

In theory I always loved the idea of having a lot of dolls, because I adore a lot of molds. At one point (when I first started in the hobby), I thought it would be grand to have at least one doll from every (legit) BJD manufacturer.

The most dolls I've ever owned at one time were four MSDs, and it turned out to be way too many for me. I should have bought one and spoiled her silly. Instead, I had four dolls with half-formed personalities and few clothes and accessories. Too stressful! I'm down to two again (MSD-sized). For now, I won't be buying anymore dolls in the foreseeable future.

I like having a lot of dolls. Counting floating heads, I have 16 and going strong. It leaves a lot of options open for different styles of clothing and faceups that just wouldn't work with other molds.

I view my dolls as artwork, not as toys. I like to have a lot of pretty things lounging around my room for the sole purpose of my viewing pleasure.

I am currently in the mid point. I mean physically I have 3 SD, 2 MSD and one tiny. Since MSD and tiny do not take up so much room. I do not really count them (ok, I am cheating that way).

But I am waiting on 4 dolls at the same time. I do not know who I would feel once they are all here. But at this time, I think I am placing a 10 SD limit on myself, because I really do not think I can handle all of them when they are all here. Currently, I rotate between the three of SD and spend time with them separately.

I buy because I am attracted to the sculpt. Ideally, I would probably have more heads than bodies.

well since I have a rather large 'family' {18}, I guess I like alot of them around..LOL. Last year after the new year, when I only had 14, I went through a thing where I sold 6 of my dolls in 2 months, and was down to 8..I had planned to save the money and not buy anymore dolls...but it looked so empty in my bedroom where I keep most of them that I started buying again.. and when they came out with Unidoll Ark and the MNF Shushus it was love at first site..click click..then I sold some, bought some more..lol

I guess I like alot of different companies molds, so I guess I will always have a big family..besides I have gotten used to seeing them all around, and I think I would have gotten bored with the hobby a long time ago if I only had a couple of dolls..but then there are times that I think I should have stayed with only a couple and saved ALOT of money.

I've been in the hobby for about 2.5 years, I think. I don't think I ever said "just one". From the begining I figured I'd have the feeling of "but he needs a friend!" spurring me on. I've bought and rehomed a number of dolls.
The most I had at one time was 5. That was when I realized my limit.

so I guess I'm happier with a few. I won't put a numerical limit on my group, but partially because of money, space, and time, I can't see myself going into the double digits ^^

I am hoping to keep my BJD collection to no more than 6. If I have to add to that, I will force myself to sell one to make room. I don't want tons of dolls taking over my limited bedroom space, plus I am finding that I will need to keep an ongoing monthly budget for accessories for the ones I have. My first doll was lonely. So I got him a friend. His friend was much smaller, so he required more friends his own size. Well, then the first and much bigger guy required a brother and more friends again... I did sell a couple of dolls last year, but I rounded out at 9 individuals who are here to stay. There is another 7 sculpts that I must have to complete my doll family. I'll end up with 16 dolls by the end of this year, and I feel they all will receive the attention they deserve.

Usually when I see a pretty doll I think "oh, I want that!" and I skim through lots of owner pics and peruse through some in the market place or websites where they are for sale. But, I usually take my time before actually ordering the doll. And usually after a few days or so I really know if I would want the doll or if it's more of a passing fancy. I always debate with myself whether I would acutally pay attention to them or not and think about the ones I already have, and the cost and money I'm keeping in these dolls. So far I only have 3 dolls so I think this method has worked pretty well for me. Right now I've really fallen for the Pukipuki tinies! I think I will be patient and give it a little more time and make sure it's a good idea though. ;)

I can honestly say I would never want a large collection. And its not just a matter of space to keep them or money to outfit all of them... I think that the more of them I had, the less personal and individual they would become to me. All of the dolls I have at this point are vastly different from one another and there's no overlap of ideas or appearance. Of course the temptation to buy will always be there everytime I see a new mold I really like. There is something to be said for having something simply because you like it. But with these dolls being such expensive luxury items, each one that I keep really does have to have that "special" quality in addition to just being pretty.

When I first got into the hobby, I was firmly in the "I only want one" camp. And then I ended up with two. Then I was settled on five for awhile. Now I've got two more coming! I try to justify the increase to seven by pretending that two of them don't 'count' as they are Tiny-sized and the rest are 60cm+ :lol The idea of having as many as seven kind of gets to me a bit... it really was not my intent to have so many when I joined this hobby!

To some I suppose I have a large collection at 6 dolls... but I think it's a moderately sized one. ^_^ It's easy for me to say that it won't get much bigger now, but I imagine if I had more money it would be easier to get more.

However, my current core family group is really strong to me. It feels strange to bring in new dolls, they are like outsiders. I guess the dolls that I have really satisfy certain needs or desires. Dare I say I am content with what I have? Just thinking about having a huge family makes me feel stressed out. I think I like having a smaller, more manageable number.

Maybe I'm just not as much of a doll collector as I am a doll outfit collector...

I have quite a few more dolls than I intended, it is a large collection and I enjoy owning them all -- but I feel like I'm really losing momentum with the omg!gottahaveem! part of the hobby. I'm either at, or very close to saturation.

It really happened, when I started to clump them together into their respective stories, rather than simply by themselves. That in itself, really enabled me to get more and more dolls.

I don't want to continue collecting, though, not at the rate I have been at the very least. For me, there is most certainly a point in time where I'll cross a threshold, and beyond that threshold is diminished enjoyment. And man, I just want to keep having fun.

I guess what I'm saying is, I know I gotta stop eating when I'm full. I just can't quite figure out if I'm full or not. @.o

all of my dolls are tinies (of course there is a big jump in tinies but i have four 21-30cm and 3 little 6inch tinies). i could go a little nuts and i tend to do that with collections then i feel overwhelmed and i slowly find new homes (i use to collect artist teddies and had a big collection but i have let almost 3/4 of it go). i am trying not to go overboard and keep my collection under control.

4 seems to be the perfect number for me. I don't really have room or any more, in my heart or my sewing room ( 60 cm's take up a lot of space!). Also, I haven't been able to sew everything I want for the dolls i have. I think a 5th doll would get neglected.
Additionally, both my daughters have a doll (with one more on the way) so if I need a change of pace, I can make costumes for or photograph, their dolls. Lucky me breeding my own little meet up group :p

Getting my Iplehouse girl is supposed to be the "that's it" moment for me. Or so I'm telling myself. (and gonna try really hard to stick with it! even if I want a banji elf elly really really badly) I had promised myself that getting a girl doll would be the end of the resin buying...

Originally, I planned on about two dolls. Tybalt and probably his brother or his best friend or his rival. But I quickly became entrenched in floaty heads--either given to me or from events or buys and most of these heads I liked or "spoke" to me as a character-- but found I would come down with pangs of guilt for stripping a doll of his body for someone else to sit on for a while. I don't think my dolls have souls or anything, but they do embody a character, and it made me feel like I was playing favorites or something. So what started out as a small collection with some floaty heads quickly became the medium sized group it is now.

So I ended up with eight dolls and two floaty heads of no particular significance.

I like to think I love all my dolls pretty well. Some more than others sure, and I even briefly toyed with the idea of selling one of them, but I couldn't bring myself to do it, even if he was the least loved of the bunch. I love them all because they're all unique--all but two pairs from different companies--and each has their own style of clothing and look, so I never have trouble finding someone to wear some outfit I like the style of or if I want a character that fits this ideal to pay attention to today. I also don't really count my two tinies as dolls with maintenance--neither requires a wardrobe or accessorizing--so really, I feel my collection is at six. And I think I'm satisfied. I don't have any "talky" characters in my head at the moment, and the banji elf elly I crave is more for the lulz than anything...

Good news? My bedroom isn't necessarily lacking space, but bad news? OH MY GOD my closet has absolutely no place left for all the bulky boxes these things ship in!

When I first got into ABJDs, I had a wishlist that was a mile long, and honestly thought that someday I would own that many dolls (it must have been upwards of 20!) I've had as few as one doll, and as many as four...and I sometimes find even one overwhelming for my budget.

Maybe one day when I'm making a bit more money, I might have a few more...I don't think I could ever see myself with more than ten, though. I just don't have that much time or emotional investment for dolls ^^;;

2 possibly 3 would be the most I would ever own at a given time. I know that I am the kinda person who would sadly neglect my least favorite, I also personal don't believe in letting something that I worked so hard to get just dissipate in the back of my closet. Or collect dust on the top of my shelf.

I am by no way or means condoning anyone who likes to have a large collection, and I know that there are lots of large collectors out there who properly take care of them. And would never neglect them, like I would do......

But yeah that's me, I would only own a couple...... But who's not to say I wouldn't own a ton of cloths and accessories?^^

3. It took me sooo long time to chose my very first big doll -it is difficult to me buy things, I need it to be totally in my sence - and I don't want to buy girl-dolls, vampire-dolls or anime heroes. At least I found one, waited 2 month for ordering period and waiting for him now. Also I found one more I would like to buy so waiting a month before I can order him as well... And I know who gonna be third, but he is unavailable for now. So at least after a real long tome of looking for my trio I found them. Just have to cross my fingers now...
Ok, something else. I read on other forum about a girl who have 200 of dolls. And I still thinking about it. What should you do with such a huge army? I mean all this resin corpse gonna scare me a bit. I don't know what I have to do if I have 200 hundreds of relatives, I mean real people, who reminds about themselves, talk to you, can be noisy terrible or sweet, but dolls? It seems I can't quiet understand why people collect something, I mean really "collect", for such a huge amount... anyway

I suppose I'd have what most people might see as a relatively large collection (14, as of today), though they don't really feel all that numerous to me. Each doll I get is agonised over and debated about for a long time before I make the purchase, and each is bought to fit a specific character I've had in mind for that doll. Some of them get more attention than others, sure, but they all mean something to me and if they didn't then they'd be sold pretty sharpish. I'm nearly done with buying SD13s (I have a strict 'shopping list' of characters who still need to come home) and after another couple of girls I'll be happy with the big 'uns I have, I think. The little 'uns are a different story, but there are only a finite number of characters I need to buy for there as well and then I'll be done. I look forward to that day, to be honest - more time and money to spend on my current gang, rather than putting it away for more still to come.

Part of me keeps telling me I should only have a few. I keep thinking that if I get too many, some won't get as much attention as others and I feel like I'm neglecting some. I feel that way about my pets, but I still have a bunch of them too. The other part of me wants to keep getting more, either for the sake of collecting or to finish off certain characters in a going rp storyline of mine. So far, I really only have 6 total characters to make, so three more to buy before I'm really content. I wouldn't call 6 a big group, but its currently more than I have space for. I've been collecting them pretty slowly, so I probably have time to find room for more.

I'm coming to terms with the fact that we couldn't quite stop at just a few. ^^;;

There are two of us, so our current stock of 6 is split in half on a technicality. I meant to only have two\one for me and one for my partner, but we have so many characters clambering for attention in our heads that it's impossible to look at new molds and not say, "That one would be perfect for X-character!" Our plans very quickly expanded after that.

I'm a little conflicted in how I feel about it, really. All our dolls get attention (a lot of attention), and I'm pretty meticulous about sewing and buying things for the dolls we have first so they're not half-put together for the sake of saving for the next doll, but it was a shock when dolls 5 and 6 arrived within a day of each other and suddenly our doll pile started looking like a meetup had crashed our living room. I feel a little bad sometimes that it's gotten more difficult to take them all with us when we got to mini-meets and whatnot (though I've gotten good at lugging a giant bag around), and a little part of me chokes when I really think about the fact that we've settled on having 9.

No more SDs, though. The 4 characters who got to be bigger than the others are our favorites, and it feels weird letting anyone else be that size.

I'm a new collector, so I thought I could just live with a couple and be happy. Now I'm thinking about the 3 & 4. So I don't know how many I will end up with. LOL

I have some BJD, not few but neither so many. The problem is that I can't stop buying them....everytime I decide to stop for a bit...I find a doll that I like and everything re-starts!
I think that BJD are too addictive!More than drugs!So...for me...better more than few!

I like having a smaller collection of dolls, I'm perfectly happy with the 2 BJD's I have now :) My dolls are a much more personal collection compared to my MLPs or Pinky:St, and its easier to focus on a smaller collection than a large one for me. What I mean is like my BJDs and Pullips actually have a personality that I give them and little background stories and whatnot while my other toys are just...toys. Sure I love them too, but I don't feel the need to give them as much attention as I do to my BJDs and Pullips. Plus I don't think I could afford to clothe a lot of dolls XD

How on earth do some of you manage upwards of 15 dolls??? Even 10 is a little daunting to me. Twenty just seems excessive - I'm the kind of person who tends to find the more BJDs that are together in a room, the more ordinary and less special each becomes. But each to their own I guess. If you can manage it...

Me personally, I originally planned on two. Now I've expanded that list to 5 1/2 (the 1/2 is a floating head :)) I'm still deciding on whether or not to get another boy, and I'm tossing up between my planned girl and another mold that's come out (neither have been released though...*sigh*). But no more than 10. If I ever reach 10.

I have twelve dolls sitting in the room with me right now, and I don't doubt for a minute that each of them is still completely special, unique, and fully loved. For me, having a larger number has meant that their lives are more enriched by virtue of the multitude of complex relationships they all have with each other, and my life is more enriched for being surrounded with so many different, unique personalities. Each addition hasn't made me love the others less -- it's enlarged my capacity to love. :)

I was happy with one. I was happy with two, with four, with eight. I'm happy with the number I have now, and if it becomes larger, I'll be happy with that as well. You yourself said that you only planned two originally, but now have the capacity to consider up to ten already.

I don't think it's anyone's place to make judgement calls on how anyone else enjoys this hobby. What works for other people may not work for you, and that's fine -- you can enjoy the hobby in your own way, and they can enjoy it in theirs. This hobby is a very personal thing for a lot of people, so we each have our own ways of making it work for us. But making judgement calls on other people's enjoyment of it seems a little narrow minded.

Bravo. One of the reasons we wanted an 18+ board was so that the community wouldn't have to deal with a certain level of immaturity.

Responsible adults are usually able to assume - not incorrectly - that other responsible adults can manage their own affairs.

I think there is a point at which some doll owners might feel overwhelmed. I'm hitting that point with oh, about 40 - which is why I have some up at the Marketplace. I'd like to add that I am getting a great deal of pleasure out of the hobby and I love the dolls who make up my family, and I'm comfortable with the (admittedly, less than extravagant) buying I do for them.

I'm not in financial trouble and I am generous to charities. I'm a responsible adult, as are most of us here.

Please save the judgements for other communities.

I agree with Karhys wholeheartedly and unequivocally. I have the dolls that I have because I love each and every one of them, and I can afford them on my own without forcing financial difficulties on my household finances.

While I do have some that I consider my 'Showcase' dolls, they still have personalities and I enjoy them all.

Last count was 29, with plans for number 30 to be ordered with the DIM Minimee David Tennant order in the works on DoA.

But when people ask how many I have, I can't give a number without stopping. Numbers don't matter to me. What matters is that I have a lovely collection of dolls and a lovelier collection of friends both local and far away that I have made through my collection.

I have five, with plans for getting at least one more in the forseeable future. I don't know if that's considered big or small, but it feels right to me. All of my dolls are completely different -- and not just in size. Their personalities and fashion styles are as diverse as their size. I'd start to draw the line if I had two dolls that were too similar. It's one reason why I keep waffling on whether I want another mini girl or not. If she ended up being too similar to my other mini, I couldn't justify keeping her.

Completely agreed with Karhys and all those who love their dolls, no matter how many they have. You do what you want to do and if it makes you happy, then so be it. No one has to right to say a person with a large collection doesn't love their dolls as much as a person with a small collection. I'm at a good steady number and I'm totally fine with it despite it being much more than I ever thought I'd have.

I love being able to have multiple dolls, There's more room for costume making for different personalities. I suppose I could spoil just the ones I have now, but I want them to have boyfriends... so the doll family will grow in multiples of two! I don't like my dolls to be without a mate/sister/brother/friend, does that make sense? Maybe because subconsciously I don't want/like being alone either.

I'm at over 10 with more on order but whereas before I've been able to thin the herd, now I'm finding the dolls I have, I want to keep. I can't imagine getting rid of any of them. I see people wondering how you can give all the dolls the attention they need when you have a few of them, but my own personal opinion is that while you may treat them as kids, they're not and leaving a couple on the shelves for a month while you focus on another doesn't harm them at all. I have a couple of real life kids that I have to focus on and there are times when my doll hobby comes to a crashing halt ie school holidays etc. If my doll kids needed constant attention, they'd be up for adoption. As to how many I'll end up owning - who knows? I think I'll start to reach my limit soon, I don't think I'll get to over 20. I don't have space for endless amounts of dolls and I don't want to be surrounded by hordes. I think however many you collect is your business but I'm surprised by how often now I'm seeing comments along the lines of if you have more than a couple, you're a neglectful parent.

It always sort-of amuses me when people get boggle-eyed over large collections, and automatically assume that anyone who has more than three or four dolls can't possibly look after/care for/care about such a big group "properly"... Especially when they also wring their hands over how those poor, neglected dolls couldn't possibly be loved enough to each have their own unique, developed characters or distinct personalities and styles.

Those assumptions are bunk.
Every one of them.

Dolls aren't a zero-sum game.

At this point in my life, the fewer the better, though there are one or two more that I covet for the future, and there always will be! I love the liveliness and diversity that seem to come with a big doll family, but I have so many other hobbies and obligations that even with only two dolls (and just one at the moment - my new girl is off for a face-up), I have trouble spending as much time as I'd like with them. I'm also such an inveterate packrat and materialist that I'm always fighting very hard to keep my collecting impulses under control, for the sake of my sanity, bank account, and living space.

My plan was to be a one-doll person for as long as possible (ha ha ha, I know) - I did fine for two years before unexpectedly falling in love with Bambicrony sculpts at the first meet-up that I attended. I am now convinced that one hour at a meet-up is a worse enabler than 3 hours of browsing online. XD

I have a large collection. Sometimes I wish I had fewer dolls, but I also know that I'd still want dolls that fit the characters I am missing. The hard part is coming to terms that some dolls are favoured and that it is OK.

I also make sure that I am extremely happy with each one in the collection. If I am not, then it's time to go out and look for a better doll to fit what I want.

I would love to have a large collection as there are quite a few dolls out there I have seen I would really like to buy - but I am limited by the size of storage in my apartment.

And since I am the kinda person who do not want to throw out the boxes it means limited and very selective buying.

Haha, I think I'm of the minority here: when I first got into the hobby 3 years ago I never intended to have more than two dolls and I've never felt the urge to have more than two to this day. (My friend who got me into the hobby always teased me saying "oh, you say that now...")

My first doll was SD13-sized and I loved him to bits, but when I got my Unoa in 2006 it changed my view completely. She was so much easier to handle, she posed so well, and I just loved her so much more. I can't really explain it. I never imagined I'd ever sell my first doll, but he's currently for sale now after much debate and realizing that he's not getting the love he deserves. So I'm selling him and getting an L-bi instead and I really do believe that once I have my two unoas, I won't want any others.

Two is a nice number for me. I don't have enough love to go around for more. xD

Hi I'm new here. I have lots of dolls - many I need to sell - Then came the BJD's - Now I need to decide what to keep - I have the new Bisou-AI and have ordered two more - they fit into Riley Clothes. I also have MSD and would like to continue with the Minifees - I think they are my absolute favorite. I only have a Soo. Some of the larger ones I love their faces and wish they came msd size.

Me Personally...I always wanted a large family...not just in dolls but in general...I didn't always plan to have so many...it just kinda turned out that way...

I love all my dolls...you'll see dolls in my collection that I've had for years...over the years I've collected many dolls...and I've sold some dolls (only the ones that didn't really fit in with me with my crew) but I love all my dolls very much and I'm not looking to add more to my crew...it's just that some photos find their way to me and I feel that they would be a fantastic addition to my dolly family ^^; so I bring them in for a Trial period...and if they last the first 6 months they normally will never leave...

Im very impressed with huge doll families and although in some corner of my mind I covet such a large group I am drastically limited by my husband (they really freak him out). My limit at the moment is three, simply because with the characters I have in mind, their family is balanced and complete with those personalities. Although, a room full of beautiful resin faces must be such a joy to behold.

ROFLOL! What a question! I swore ever so faithfully when I was trying to convince my husband to let me get my first doll, that she would be my only one... less than a year later, I just sold my fifth one so I am back down to four with two floating heads, but the reason I sold her was to finance another doll...and I have recently discovered that I *must* have a Puki, which would make at least six... So much for one! I also have a boy planned at some point to be the mate for one of my girls...which would make seven...I haven a feeling that I would be done by ten. That would be too many, I just couldn't play with them all. So, I suppose a large collection is relative, isn't it?

It's hard to say. I'm limiting myself to two or three right now. I don't have the time, money, space, or stability for more. (I'm a student.) But after a few years, when I've settled down and presumably have more disposable income/space/time, I may consider expanding my collection.

Patience is the key. All those pretty dollies are very tempting, but I have to keep myself in check for now. ^_^

I only have two BJDs at the moment, but I wouldn't mind my BJD family getting bigger. I don't use credit cards because I prefer not be in debt, so when I buy dolls, it's only when I have physical money.. That probably means that my family will be growing... very very VERY slowly though. As long as I have my own collection, I'll be happy. :D

I thought, I just want two... But then I saw another I wanted, and another... And now I have seven dolls, one head, an eighth on the way, and am thinking about a ninth which would be my first big doll. D:

I regret being a little impulsive in the beginning because now I don't have the heart to throw anyone out. But I'm in a never ending ride of changing their wigs, eyes, and faceups in a quest to make them perfect (if that's even possible...) I think being more selective and going slower would have saved me the time and let me put together dolls more fully before getting more. Ah well... that's just how it ends up sometimes. I got more cats than I originally intended, too...

I started out wanting an E-An, with my wife wanting a Camine, and then I started hunting through all the different doll sites to find the 'perfect' doll. I still really want an E-An, but god, my list of "must have" has grown from two to about eight.

Too bad my wife has put a cap on my dolls at 4, so I'm going to have to be really really selective. Or, you know, tie her up in the basement or something until she gives in :D ha ha.

7 is a small number right? Right? Please tell me it is... I said I'd not buy that many, and I don't want to be seen as having a lot and breaking that unwritten promise to myself.
(I mean I only needed 1 for research purposes, how can one BREED!)

If I'm seen as "Whoah! YOu have so many dolls!" I think my bank accounts, and credit cards will cry themselves to sleep.
