Personally I think we have to expect anything made with resin to yellow somewhat with age. That is just the nature of the beast.

However, I think it is unacceptable for dolls to turn green or butter yellow or to age in a patchy uneven way. Honestly I don't know why we all put up with it and continue to buy from these companies. Think about it - would you feel like it was okay for any other luxury item like a diamond or a car to turn from white to green within a year? I don't think we would think that was okay so why do we accept it with our dolls?

Also, they should all be using the UV cut in their resin. But the resin will stilll yellow - just more slowly. I feel like the patina of age is okay but a total color change is not.

That said - I will still buy my second hand french resin Narsha and love her - yellow and all. I kind of like buying the second hand dolls because it's more a case of what you see is what you get rather than trying to guess what color you doll will actually end up!

my oldest doll is 5 years old (not counting the second hand doll i got, wich is in fact 5 years with me but even older than that)
I don't mind the yellowing, in fact it makes them easier to photograph with flash :)
i usually don't see it myself but sometimes someone mentions it and then i notice.
When the oldest doll (a volks sd sister) turned really yellow i sanded her a bit and the result was really good.
So if the yellow color bugs me i just sand them a bit (or take of their yellowed msc layer :)...)

I've had my dolls for three years and they're both white. One came to me yellow and one came from the factory. Both have stayed consistent since I never put my dolls in sunlight nor do I use strong lighting in photographs. So I'm pretty sure Volks Pureskin doesn't yellow on its own, or at least white doesn't.

Kind of a scary thought yellowing. I think it would bother me but not enough to replace my dollies :(

I have a question as a newbie to BJD's... Does yellowing happen to ALL BJD's? Does it happen to Dollstown dolls? I am saving for my first doll and my interests are Dollstown, Soom and Souldoll. Can anyone help me, do you know if these dolls yellow or will all of them yellow eventually? Then maybe I should get all of them in White Skin huh?

IT doesn't bother, I have several dolls from several years of birth, some are more yellow than other, some are tanned, some are a little green too !!
They are different, that's all.
I love them anyway !!

is there any other way to protect the dolls from yellowing besides preventing them from the sunlight??

I do not see a really big problem... It will take time to yellow and when it does, I wont be able to do anything, so what will it change?

A little more blushing might do the work :)

And I am sure with all the UV coating we can put on them and just not let them in constant sun it will take even more time to yellow then in the begginning :D

Sad thing about some bjd's is the yellow, but I think it brings character to the doll..but then again if you want to buy another head for the body they almost never mathc..remember Sunlight Bad for Dolly.

Yellowing doesn't bother me much. One of my girls is 2nd-hand, so she's much yellower compared to my newer girl, but it's an even yellowing so she still looks fine.

I think it would depend on how bad it got or if it was patchy yellow. If it took away the human like skin colour and made them look less 'real' in pictures I dont think I'd be happy about it at all.
I guess If you have newer dolls to compare to older yellowing dolls it may be a lot more obvious

First I thought I would bother by yellowing. But tones of yellowing has been pretty and if there have been darker areas I have used sode bath or put them sunbathing. xD Either way color gets nice and smooth. :3 There is not resins in this yellowed tone I have and I love variation so. <3

I don't think I'd be too bothered. I take my dolls outside almost daily and oddly none have yellowed yet. As long as they don't turn some horrid color I'll be fine.

Yellowing doesn't really bother me. In fact, it adds character sometimes. My Kohaku pureskin has slightly yellowed and looks fantastic in his old world wordrobe.

I was frustrated though when I got another unoss head. And it's much more brighter than the old one. Way too much of a difference so I can't interchange heads.

The only real thing that bothers me is that my first unoss had her lashes and brows sanded and it's impossible to remove the lines that developed. I had a commision done to disguise that. She looks really good now. :)

Although I've loved dollfies since around 2003, I'm still rather ignorant about it. And this is the first time I'm really read up on yellowing and I saw some pictures on DoA.

And to be 100% honest some of the yellowing I saw on some dolls would bother me if they were mine, but those were the extreme cases of it looking yellow green. Though to say the least some of those dolls could pull the tone off.

But the peachy-yellow ones didn't bother me at all and wouldn't bother me at all. It looks more like Asian flesh tones.

Yellowing is just aging in my eyes we all can't look the same forever ^^.

My head screams yes it does..i hate to see it..but my heart says "shut up" lol Simply because i have a Narae stricken with yellow peril and were talking jaundiced liver failure yellow with her..but i still adore her to bits, she was a gift and i will treasure her for always, however i will never ever own French resin anything ever again no matter how many claims i read that the problem is fixed!!!

How long does it take before a doll starts yellowing? Is it the same on average or does it vary greatly from maker to maker?

Janne

I think it varies with the type of resin - and sometimes the individual batch of resin. More companies are now using some kind of UV-protection agent in their resin, as sunlight as a known contributor to yellowing (and other discoloration.)

There can be other factors - heat and cigarette smoke might also yellow dolls more quickly.

I have Volks dolls I've had since 2001 that haven't appreciably yellowed. I've taken them outdoors for photos, but do not leave them exposed to sunlight for any length of time.

I bought a Volks doll of that age from Yahoo!Japan, and it was much yellower (and smelled of cigarettes.)

To be safe, I'd try to buy dolls that have some kind of UV-protection - and then, of course, try not to expose them to sunlight and other factors.

It varies, though beauty white and French resin dolls are more susceptable to it. My first doll (and AR with crystal rose skin) I've had for almost four years, and he does not seem noticibly different to me--I'm sure he has changed, but it's been so gradual and minor, that I don't look at him and think "oh gee, he really yellowed". I don't display my dolls in sunlight, but I take them out to meetups and for pictures. Most likely unless you leave your doll displayed in a sunny spot or smoke around it, you won't notice that much of a difference overtime.

I have a variety of mediums (wider collection of dolls) in my collection including vinyl, porcelain, cloth, felt and now resin, and I always keep them all in a darkened room to protect the material. The truth is that the only proven long-lasting medium is porcelain. Even plastics and vinyl are susceptible to changes unique to the medium and sometimes unique to a particular company. As more and more resins emerge there will be various discoloration issues and perhaps other issues, I think, as companies start to create more cost-efficient resins.

That aside, does yellowing bother me? A little. But, I could have a doll's face-up redone if a doll yellowed to reduce the obviousness of it, and I could take black and white pictures, so it wouldn't be too horrible. But, I would prefer a "pink tone" over a "yellow tone".

In the picture at the beginning of this thread, I kind of like the differing complexions - it adds a unique element to the older doll compared to the newer one. But, like that individual I would be worried about the extent of future yellowing. :heart

I don't know. I think it depends on the type of resin (french resin yellows more quickly), the manufacturer (not all resins are created equal) and the conditions your doll is subjected to (a lot of exposure to sunlight will naturally yellow the medium).

But, I hope someone can give you more specific details. Are you worried about a particular company's doll? There may be someone who knows a lot about that company and could give you their observations of the yellowing from their own or friends' collections.

Yellowing doesn't really bother me. It's just something that happens to resin. Although, I'd be rather upset if one of my dolls turned super yellow.

I know that yellowing is natural and inevitable but it still bothers me a little, though in some dolls more than others. I wouldn't go crazy unless my doll became a banana or turned green or something @.@

On the other side, have a DoC as my oldest doll, he actually paled instead of yellowed lol :)

if the head and body yellow evenly then its fine with me, but if its uneven or the body is more yellow then the body... it'd be a little of an annoyance to me.

It does bother me, but right now they have this sort of "antique" yellow look, which is a bit more tolerable than the more yellowed resin of older dolls.

I don't really think yellowing is a huge deal since it can be slowed by meny means and it can also be covered up by blushing and airbrushing

Yellowing does bother me - particularly on hybrid dolls, when the different resins start to yellow at different rates. I have a CP Breakaway 05 vampire head on a 2008 AOD white body with 2009 AOD white hands, and head, body and hands are all different tones. The head is the notorious Luts "beauty green", which doesn't help.

However I've tested out the peroxide and bicarb method on a NS 2004 Shiwoo head with excellent results, so I'm fairly confident that with a peroxide & bicarb bath, cleaning, new face-up and blushing, I can get all parts matching again.

So, yes - I'm bothered, but not overly, because I'm confident I can correct it to my satisfaction.

I don't really care as long as the yellowing is even (since I have no company hybrid dolls)

Yellowing on normal skin dolls doesn't bother me unless it's seriously yellow, like a lemon lol. As long as the yellowing is even and all part match it doesn't bother me.

However, my WS Zuzu delfs have yellowed quite a lot since I first got them. I didn't really notice until I got my Zuzu delf Lio and he is paper white compared to my corni and persi. He makes my cats look like a completely different colour resin than he is! They aren't yellow yellow, it's not a horrible colour but when I concentrate on it it really annoys me D: I know eventually my lio will yellow two and they'll look better together.

I try not to let it bother me, it is just a chemical reaction, and I will still love my doll no matter how yellow... but I sort of wish it would not happen.

If yellowing is an inherent characteristic of some resins, then I guess it's just something that has to be expected. I can't see it bothering me too much... unless the colour was really awful or uneven...

It won't bother me if the dolls been with me for a long time. I recently bought a slightly yellowed Limho Mono doll. He's French Resin. I'm sending him off for a de-yellowing session and hope that helps somewhat and then he's going to be given a face up and body blushing. (: If he starts to show more signs of yellowing later on, I seriously won't mind but I never take my dolls out before the sun is down and I keep them in their box most of the time. As for limited hard to get dolls, I'd purchase them even if they're somewhat yellowed.

Nope,
i think it adds something unique to your doll.

How ever my dolls seem to get lighter. [i recently learned that it's more comen for dolls to turn yellow, but sometimes they become lighter... ]

Which i don't mind to much,
but my Unoa doesn't match anything anymore =3='
She is close to white skin atm :/

Yellowing doesn't really bother me much, since almost all of my dolls are NS, however "beauty green" bothers me a bit. I only have one white skin doll. I had another sometime ago, but he didn't stay too long. I was afraid I would lose him in the backyard if I took him outside. It drove me nuts.

I own a hybrid mini, and while my DoC head isn't noticeably yellowing, the serendipity body sure is. It's a little frustrating, but a good scrubbing seems to help with the yellowing. I would be more concerned if I had non-head different parts (like replacement hands) because of the difference in yellowing. The fortunate thing in both those instances is that most human heads and hands don't have a skintone that fully matches the rest of the body. If my serendipity body yellows any more, I would consider having the head yellowed slightly to be a closer match.

In general, if the yellowing isn't too severe and matches, I'm fine with it. Beauty green is my exception.

A little bit of yellowing would be okay, but I would really dislike any severe yellowing. White dolls turning green has completely turned me off from the idea of having a white doll.

I am very careful to keep my dolls out of the heat and sun; I can only hope for the best that this keeps them from yellowing badly. However, I have to say, one of my dolls is two and a half years old and hasn't yellowed a bit from the looks of it.

A little yellowing doesn't really matter to me, except for the fact that is decreases sale value by quite a bit usually. But I generally buy my dolls to keep them, so it's not a problem.^^

As long as it is evenly yellowing it could possibly be a way to identify original vintage dolls...I have friends with early Tonner fashion dolls that are blotchy now and it is not appreciated. I am new to resin dolls and anxiously await my first white HOJOO Wings doll. Does sunlight affect this process? Thanks for the info!

How interesting! Knowing white dolls will turn green eventually will really influence my wig choice for new white doll. UV plexi or glass can cut down on UV rays when doll is displayed behind it. I wonder about the tiny lavender, blue, green, colored BoBobie?

Yellowing doesn't bother me as long as it's even and there aren't discoloration spots. It would bother me if I bought a doll that came out of the package with undisclosed yellowing, but otherwise, it doesn't bother me at all! All things fall apart eventually, what matters is the fun you have in the mean-time.

No, in fact, I welcome it. I think normal skin too pale for my liking, and I'm not willing to shell out an extra $60 for a more realistic skin color.
